I think the names aren't coming out because they're already committed. Isn't that the case with the Oregon commit who is still talking to the Texas staff?

Can we go any higher than #1? We're about to find out.

The DB situation is getting weird to me. No visitors on these lists. We're pretty much cooking at every single position except DB. Only commits are a guy that may be a future LB and our lowest-rated guy (I know they like him).

No HS prospects they really like? Joseph and Gideon hibernating? Some serious top secret shit going on?

They're viewing Williams as a safety as of now. It's hard to watch the film and say "oh, he's a linebacker" at this point.

The guys they want in the secondary, barring someone emerging from fall scouting, are highly coveted by the teams' they're committed to and those teams are not stupid. I wouldn't be surprised if they're trying to not have certain guys listed as visiting and aiming for very late flips. Of course, that will fail because Geoff Ketchum will inevitably hear something from somewhere and fuck it all up.

I don't know if I am putting the pieces together correctly or not, but my view is that the CB committed to Ohio State from Alabama could just show up at some point. Take that with a grain of salt, for sure.

#11607

I wonder if this staff is still pursuing Kade  Phillips, or if they're aiming higher?

I really can't believe we're out of the desert after being there for damn near 13 years and we're sitting at #1. This staff is relentless, and I cannot wait to see who else they flip later on. We're firing on all cylinders.

Was scanning the ON3 top 100, and I am very surprised that Alabama has continued to recruit as well as they have. They’ve captured a lot of that list.

Interestingly, you almost never hear of a pro soccer player who "didnt pick up the game" of soccer until he was 15-16.  That athletic trait does seem to flow that way very often.  Maybe because the eye to foot trait has to be learned from an early age?

I think it's likely much more that soccer is often one of the first sports that kids do because when they are really young it's "here's a ball, and a field, go run around" and is the intro to team sports. Same with tee-ball but that requires more equipment. Football takes a lot more equipment, kids get started later for safety reasons, it's not played everywhere, etc. So most kids start in soccer and then transition out. Or if they are tall they get told to play basketball and then may transition out. You'll get the occasional didn't play basketball but then all of a sudden end up tall and so be "late to basketball" in that sense.

Athleticism isn't nearly as important to soccer as it is to football. It helps, but there are some "relatively" average athletes that are dominant soccer players because the game relies so much on skill and finesse.

With football, you simply have 0 shot of making it to the league unless you are an otherworldly physical specimen (except for QBs mainly, but modern QBs are crazy athletic too). Some NFL players are better athletes than others, but they're all ridiculous compared to your average human. The premier league on the other hand has some guys that from a pure athleticism standpoint aren't all that impressive, but still have very successful careers.

This is it. Soccer skills require thousands of hours of technical skill development. Like skiing or golf or playing point guard, if you don't learn those skills at an early age, it's highly unlikely you can catch up as a teen. The top pros are able to combine athleticism with that skill development.

Skill position players in football need to develop some technical skills, but it doesn't require near the time (except for QB). You can teach a teen to catch the ball, but the rest is largely just athleticism (you need to be able to run fast and have lots of strength).

Someone in front of a computer should paste it, but Gerry mentioned the CB from Alabama as a long shot target in his write-up today. I believe, and feel free to fact check me here, that this is the first time a credible recruiting journalist has mentioned him as potentially in play for Texas.

Things might get loud in the DB realm of recruiting.

There’s also a lot of buzz that the CB commit from somewhere in FB/Sugarland is looking great as a senior. I’d be interested if the film junkies here like @Burt Macklin, @Fud, and many others have had a look and an opinion.

Defensive back recruiting: Deep sea fishing

The Texas Longhorns are extremely pleased with the two defensive backs committed in the 2025 class thus far.

Five-star safety Jonah Williams (Galveston, Texas/Ball) is playing at an extremely high level as a senior, and doing so 10 pounds lighter than the end of his junior school year. OnTexasFootball 4-star cornerback Caleb Chester (Missouri City, Texas/Marshall) continues to display a very high level of football intelligence along with ball skills and has added 10-12 pounds of strength since the beginning of his junior season.

Texas would like to add another piece or two from the high school ranks to the 2025 class, but the Horns are also okay with working in the portal to fill an immediate need if that is the direction headed. That means Terry Joseph and the defensive staff are going "deep sea fishing" at a second corner spot in the cycle. OnTexasFootball takes a look at the names to know, with the understanding there are no guarantees the Longhorns will flip one of the top targets by December 4.

In-state flip priorities

Devin Sanchez, Houston (Texas) North Shore - Ohio State commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 5-star
The juice: Sanchez and family still answer the phone when Texas calls. Unless Sanchez gets on campus for a game this season, the phone calls won't matter.

Dorian Brew, Conroe (Texas) High - Oregon commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star++
The juice: Texas remains in contact with Brew.

Cobey Sellers, Pearland (Texas) Shadow Creek - Texas A&M commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-sta
The juice: Texas talks with Sellers on a weekly basis. The Horns will try to chip away here.

*Note: If Texas was to flip a corner, it's more likely from in-state vs. OOS headed into late September.

True deep sea fishing

Dijon Lee, Mission Hills (Calif.) High - Alabama commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 4-star++

Na'eem Offord, Birmingham (Ala.) Parker - Ohio State commit
OnTexasFootball ranking: 5-star

One more note

Texas is evaluating corners nationally as seniors too. Not out of the question an offer is made, but not a lock at this point either.

Michael Terry III :  Still likes his RPM to Texas.  Was on campus for UTSA, and is expected back for the Georgia game.  (Also expected to attend Oregon/Ohio State.)

Javion Hilson:  Still likes his RPM to Texas.  Also, was supposed to be at Florida last weekend, but didn't show up there.

This is a cool part of the portal era, at least for us. We don't have to settle for recruits that we don't absolutely believe in just to have numbers.

Tom Loy (247 Sports / National) had a long article, with updates on almost 40 prospects across the country.  I've posted the updates for the ones we are interested in (or morbidly curious about - hello, Husan Longstreet!) below, and the entire article is in the spoilered section.

The uber-short version - he really likes us for Hilson, likes us for Terry, thinks we're a big threat for Mbatchou, and gives us a chance w/ Owusu-Boateng.  Amen.

**************************************************************************************************************

NA'EEM OFFORD, FIVE-STAR CB (OHIO STATE COMMIT)

I still like Auburn to eventually flip Na'eem Offord from Ohio State. There is simply far too much buzz on the Tigers keeping him home, which surely wasn't always the case.

It won't be easy, but that's the pulse. Keep an eye on Oregon as well.

MICHAEL TERRY III, FIVE-STAR ATHLETE

Texas feels good about its chances coming out of another visit to Austin. However, don't rule out Nebraska. The Huskers believe that they are firmly in the mix to land Michael Terry III.

Oregon is another program at the top. He'll likely be in Eugene this fall and return to Texas one more time. This one doesn't look too close to being over, but I still like the Longhorns as of today.

HUSAN LONGSTREET, FIVE-STAR QB (TEXAS A&M COMMIT)

Texas A&M feels good about keeping Husan Longstreet in the class. The staff has worked hard to show him love and continued to make him a top priority. That said, keep an eye on USC. Don't rule out the Trojans yet. They are still recruiting him and keeping that recruitment warm if there happens to be some movement at the quarterback position.

DALLAS WILSON, FOUR-STAR WR (OREGON COMMIT)

Candidly, at this point, Florida's best chances at flipping Dallas Wilson from Oregon might be following a coaching change in Gainesville. That's just truly the feeling of multiple sources.

He loves Oregon, and he's fired up about his commitment to the Ducks, but you can't rule out the Gators. It won't get any easier as Signing Day approaches.

JAVION HILSON, FOUR-STAR EDGE

In checking with sources, as it stands right now, it's hard to see anyone beating Texas for Javion Hilson. That said, keep an eye on UCF if you're looking for a dark horse. There is some buzz there to at least pay attention to.

KEVIN WYNN, FOUR-STAR DL (FLORIDA STATE)

Florida State has its hands full as it attempts to keep Kevin Wynn committed. This won't be easy.

There is a lot of buzz around Georgia for him, but South Carolina was the one that got him on campus over the weekend. This one looks far from over.

NATHANIEL OWUSU-BOATENG, FOUR-STAR LB

Notre Dame is likely on top, as of today, for the coveted prospect. However, there are still multiple visits taking place before a final decision.

Michigan gets Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng on campus this weekend for the USC game, and the Wolverines are likely the biggest threat to Notre Dame at this point. Texas will get him in town as well, and could pull off the upset. Florida, Ohio State and USC are also in the hunt.

LAMONT ROGERS, FOUR-STAR OT (MISSOURI COMMIT)

Lamont Rogers is committed to Missouri and very happy with that pledge. The staff feels great about keeping him in the class, too.

That said, Texas A&M continues to have dialogue with him — and there are some in College Station who believe that he'll flip before all is said and done.

JOSEPH MBATCHOU, THREE-STAR DL (FLORIDA COMMIT)

Joseph Mbatchou has been committed to Florida since the summer, but keeping him in the class remains a challenge.

He was at Texas over the weekend and the Longhorns are a big threat. Auburn, Alabama, Georgia and USC, among others, are battling to flip him. At this point, we'll surely take the field over Florida.

Latest college football recruiting rumblings on top 2025 prospects, led by potential five-star flips

Spoiler

Latest college football recruiting rumblings on top 2025 prospects, led by potential five-star flips
So many football prospects in the 2025 recruiting class have already announced a college commitment, but not every process is shut down. Here are the latest buzz and rumblings, starting with a handful of five-stars on flip watch.

Tom Loy (247 Sports / National)

Despite so many top 2025 football recruits already announcing college commitments, it doesn't mean that their recruitments are completely shut down. There is still a long way to go until pen hits paper during December's early signing period.

So, where do things stand as of today?

From uncommitted five-stars to other blue-chippers on flip watch, here's the latest.

The video player is currently playing an ad.

ELIJAH GRIFFIN, FIVE-STAR DL

Elijah Griffin remains a three-team race between USC, Miami and Georgia.

The smart money and 247Sports Crystal Ball remain in the Bulldogs' favor.

DJ PICKETT, FIVE-STAR CB (LSU COMMIT)

As I've said for a while, DJ Pickett's LSU commitment came as a surprise. Those same sources, I think, would be pretty surprised if he eventually signs with the Tigers. That said, he has a lot of love for LSU and is surely fired up to be on campus multiple times this fall. Flipping him won't be easy.

The one school to watch above the rest is Miami. The Hurricanes are talking to him regularly and believe that they are firmly in this race. Keep an eye on Oregon as well.

JUSTUS TERRY, FIVE-STAR DL

It's still hard to see Justus Terry picking a school other than Georgia. There has simply been far too much buzz around the Bulldogs and Terry for far too long.

Alabama hasn't given up, though, and believes that it's in this race.

ANDREW BABALOLA, FIVE-STAR OT

There are still five teams in play for Andrew Babalola. Auburn, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Stanford remain at the top. We've said for a while that some in his family want him out West at Stanford because of the education and life after football. With Oklahoma, Babalola's best relationship potentially of any coach recruiting him is with Sooners offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh.

That said, the majority of sources whom we speak with have him landing at Auburn or Michigan. The longer this drags out, the better Auburn's chances are (in my opinion). He still hasn't seen an Auburn gameday, and the staff wants him on campus sooner rather than later. One great trip could swing things in the Tigers' favor. We'll see if he sets up a visit.

JARED SMITH, FIVE-STAR EDGE (AUBURN COMMIT)

Jared Smith been committed to Auburn for a while and, despite a visit over the weekend to South Carolina, there is still a ton of optimism coming from sources with the Tigers.

He's expected to remain an Auburn commit.

CALEB CUNNINGHAM, FIVE-STAR WR (ALABAMA COMMIT)

Caleb Cunningham has been talking to the Auburn staff for a while, and he will head to campus this weekend to check out the Tigers against Arkansas. Cunningham has a great relationship with quarterback Deuce Knight, who has been rumored to flip to Auburn for a while.

If that finally happens, it could help Auburn's chances tremendously with Cunningham. That said, it's still going to be quite the challenge to flip him from the Crimson Tide.

SOLOMON THOMAS, FIVE-STAR IOL (FLORIDA STATE COMMIT)

In checking with sources, many would be quite surprised if Solomon Thomas eventually stuck with his commitment to Florida State. Maybe that's just a guess based on how things have started for the Seminoles this fall, or maybe the feeling is legit. Personally, I think it's going to be tough to flip him. I think he has bought into what they are building.

But losing more and more games could prove costly. The school to watch is LSU. The Tigers have long been considered the biggest contender and could eventually swing this in their favor.

JEROME MYLES, FIVE-STAR WR

Jerome Myles is set to announce his commitment Wednesday on the 247Sports YouTube Channel. Before his USC visit, we said that this is a perfect fit and to look out for the Trojans. The Crystal Ball reflects that, and we expect USC to land him.

DEREK MEADOWS, FIVE-STAR WR (LSU COMMIT)

LSU landed Derek Meadows in July, and there is no reason yet to believe that he'll go back on his word.

That said, once he committed, we're told that he made it clear to the other finalists — Alabama, Notre Dame, Michigan, and Georgia — he still wants to have an open line of communication, and his recruitment isn't completely closed. He was recently asked about visiting other schools and he said he won't be doing that. We believe LSU will keep him in the class, but nothing is set in stone yet.

DEUCE KNIGHT, FOUR-STAR QB

I still like Auburn to eventually flip him from Notre Dame. The talented passer has continued to have great dialogue with both coaching staffs, but we're told that he'll take his official visit to Auburn at the end of September for the Oklahoma game.

We'll see if that swings things in favor of the Tigers once and for all.

VERNELL BROWN III, FOUR-STAR WR (FLORIDA COMMIT)

Vernell Brown III has been committed to Florida since July. It's going to be very hard to flip the Gators legacy, coaching change or not. That said, schools haven't stopped trying to flip him. Programs like Miami, Ohio State and Florida State, among others, want him in their class.

The school to watch closely is Miami. The Hurricanes have things cooking in Coral Gables and, with Brown and many other top in-state guys, it's catching their attention.

IVAN TAYLOR, FOUR-SAFETY (MICHIGAN)

Michigan landed a good one in Ivan Taylor when he flipped from Notre Dame. That said, the Fighting Irish haven't given up and are still trying their best to get him back in the class. The other top contender remains Alabama. That remains the biggest threat to the Wolverines. The Crimson Tide continue to push all of the right buttons, as Michigan tries to keep him locked in.

JAVION HILSON, FOUR-STAR EDGE

In checking with sources, as it stands right now, it's hard to see anyone beating Texas for Javion Hilson. That said, keep an eye on UCF if you're looking for a dark horse. There is some buzz there to at least pay attention to.

JULIAN LEWIS, FOUR-STAR QB (USC COMMIT)

Julian Lewis has been committed to USC for a long time, yet the decommitment rumors haven't stopped. Behind the scenes, there continues to be dialogue between Lewis and Indiana.

The Hoosiers expect him in their class, and they believe that he could be one more visit to Bloomington away from eventually flipping — especially with how their offense has performed this fall. The Indiana staff told Lewis that is was going to put up points, and it has backed that up in a big way.

JONANTHONY HALL, FOUR-STAR WR (STANFORD COMMIT)

JonAnthony Hall remains committed to Stanford, and it won't be easy to flip him. When prospects pick the Cardinal, it's never easy to get them to change their mind.

That said, USC and Michigan have been working hard behind the scenes to get him to reconsider. We'll see if he takes any trips beyond the late-October visit he has lined up for Palo Alto.

TARVOS ALFORD, FOUR-STAR LB (OHIO STATE COMMIT)

Following visits to Miami and Florida State, there is some nervous energy coming from Ohio State sources.

The Buckeyes have Tarvos Alford committed, but he's constantly talking to other schools, and there are some sources who have him on flip watch this fall. UCF is battling as well.

BEN HANKS JR., FOUR-STAR CB (FLORIDA COMMIT)

The Florida commit is happily committed. It won't be easy to flip him, especially since he's a legacy. However, the struggles in Gainesville have opened the door for Miami. This is another that could give the Hurricanes a legitimate shot.

The only thing that may be able to keep Ben Hanks Jr. committed long-term is a coaching staff. That's genuinely how some sources feel at this point.

JORDAN YOUNG, FOUR-SAFETY

I like where NC State sits in Jordan Young's recruitment.

Clemson was the team to beat for a while, but it's hard to see anyone beating the Wolfpack for the top-of-the-board talent.

MICHAEL CARROLL, FOUR-STAR IOL (ALABAMA COMMIT)

The Alabama commit made his way to Coral Gables for a visit to Miami over the weekend. That should cause some concern for those in Tuscaloosa.

However, coming out of the trip, sources connected at Alabama believe that Michael Carroll is fully locked in with the Tide. For Carroll, the gameday visits are likely not finished this fall, so Alabama fans can't relax completely quite yet.

CJ MAY, FOUR-STAR EDGE (LOUISVILLE COMMIT)

Florida State offered CJ May last week, and that grabbed his attention. If the Seminoles had offered a while back when they were first talking to him, he may be committed to them right now.

That said, he couldn't be happier with his Louisville commitment. It won't be easy to flip him, but schools continue to try their best.

OUSMANE KROMAH, FOUR-STAR RB

Ousmane Kromah's commitment is coming quickly. He'll announce his pledge Sept. 28. Keep an eye on Auburn. The 247Sports Crystal Ball is in favor of the Tigers. The others in contention are Georgia and Florida State. The Bulldogs could pull off the perceived upset, but smart money remains on Auburn, based on what has been happening behind the scenes.

LADARIAN CLARDY, FOUR-STAR SAFETY

With his commitment coming Saturday, Ladarian Clardy has focused his attention on Ole Miss and Washington. Candidly, both schools have reasons to be optimistic and both programs expect him to pick them when he announces his pledge this weekend.

Behind the scenes, he's saying all of the right things to both coaching staffs.

CORTEZ MILLS, FOUR-STAR WR (OKLAHOMA COMMIT)

There are schools trying to flip him from Oklahoma. He also made his way to Nebraska for a gameday visit this fall.

That said, Cortez Mills informed 247Sports that his recruitment is completely closed and he's signing with the Sooners in December.

CJ WILEY, FOUR-STAR WR (FLORIDA STATE COMMIT)

Many of us at 247Sports still like Georgia to eventually flip CJ Wiley from his commitment to Florida State. The Bulldogs were fairly surprised at his initial decision to pick the Seminoles. After the struggles in Tallahassee this fall, we believe that the Crystal Ball will eventually hit and he'll end up in Athens.

MIKKEL SKINNER, FOUR-STAR TE

Fresh off his Cincinnati decommitment, it's hard not to like where South Carolina is positioned in his recruitment.

Kentucky is not making this easy on the Gamecocks and he's expected at Michigan this weekend, but it seems South Carolina is in the best position to land Mikkel Skinner at this time.

DONOVAN STARR, FOUR-STAR CB (AUBURN COMMIT)

Originally from Illinois, the nation's No. 221 overall player made his way back home to watch the Illinois Fighting Illini in action over the weekend.

Currently a Tennessee resident, Donovan Starr has been committed to Auburn since June. There is some optimism coming from Illinois, but the feeling is that he'll stick with Auburn in the long run.

TY HAWKINS, FOUR-STAR QB (SMU COMMIT)

Ty Hawkins remains committed to SMU. He's locked in. He's fired up about a future with the Mustangs.

That said, sources believe Notre Dame that could at least try to make a move if and when the aforementioned Knight eventually decommits.

JARON KEAWE SAGAPOLUTELE, THREE-STAR QB (CAL COMMIT)

Just like with Hawkins, Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele is happily committed to Cal. However, he's doing his due diligence and keeping dialogue open with a few schools. Keep an eye on Notre Dame, USC and Oregon when it comes to the Bears commit.

DAMOLA AJIDAHUN, THREE-STAR OT (GEORGIA TECH)

Despite Damola Ajidahun's Georgia Tech commitment, he continues to talk with a variety of programs — and he's even taking visits.

The Yellow Jackets are nervous but still have reasons for optimism. Georgia, Ohio State and South Carolina continue to battle in an attempt to flip him.

Does Auburn have some serious NIL going or something?  Seems to be a trendy pick for a lot of high rated guys seeing as Freeze hasn't really done much so far and just got slapped around by Cal.

Was scanning the ON3 top 100, and I am very surprised that Alabama has continued to recruit as well as they have. They’ve captured a lot of that list.

Why would you be surprised one of the top programs in college football who hired one of the top coaches in college football fresh off a national championship appearance continued to recruit well?

Because they jettisoned their entire football recruiting Tammany Hall machine after Saban left in a power play by the university president.

Also, the new coach had absolutely zero ties to the region.

We were initially told that Alabama would go through some growing pains adjust to the post-sagan era.

We are annoyed that that is unfortunately not true.

Interesting top 4. UF is a dumpster fire and the other 2 haven't looked great. Seems like we could get him if we push, but Gerry seemed to imply we're holding out for Faraimo.

It’s more interesting that you have ignored certain teams’ recruiting success over the years and still think on-field results are always a huge factor.
