Texas set to host ACC commit for SEC opener

Hank South (247 Sports)

Florida State wide receiver commit Daylan McCutcheon is expected to unofficially visit Texas next weekend for its SEC opener against Mississippi State, the Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy product tells 247Sports' Mike Roach.

The four-star pass catcher officially visited the Forty Acres over the summer and has a longstanding relationship with UT wide receivers coach Chris Jackson.

"Our relationship is real good," McCutcheon said this summer. "I'm really impressed with Coach Jackson, the way he teaches wide receivers at Texas. He's blunt and up front and not sugar coating anything. I respect that the most about Coach Jackson. Just the way he teaches his receivers room, I respect that a lot."

Horns247 has reported since July that McCutcheon is a name to continue monitoring at the wide receiver position, adding he's a dark horse prospect to end up in this class. Sources have relayed to Horns247 that contact has remained between Texas and the in-state pass catcher since his pledge to the Seminoles.

Of note, Texas remains after Texas A&M commit Kelshaun Johnson as well, who is expected in for the Georgia game next month.

The Longhorns have two commitments at the wide receivers positions from five-stars Kaliq Lockett and Jaime Ffrench.

Unsure a high school player is the best replacement for that, but maybe the portal won’t give them what they desire at that position.

Well, we know we have one that if he sees the field, it is to graze. And then we have speculation. Bottom line is that we will sign guys who we think can be impact players and with a now larger scholarship number, we don't have to worry about the numbers, just the cost.

Interested to see how the DL spots fill out for this class.

Are we looking at whoever jumps on board first between Sims, Wynn, Mathis, and Mbatchou?

Gerry says the staff absolutely wants Sims, and I don't think they'd turn Wynn away.  Everything seems to indicate they are all in on Mbatchou.  Mathis looks the best on film IMO, Byron Murphy esque.

Obviously there is a serious new problem emerging. Texas is spending way too much time and effort on DL recruiting and is taking too many DL’s

The Mathis recruitment has the “go get fucked” element for Texas with Bo Davis. If that guy wants to come to Texas, it doesn’t matter who else is coming.

Given scholarship expansion, 6 DTs wouldn’t surprise me. Neither would 4 and 2-3 portal guys who are good additions but don’t break the bank.

It now seems really clear that they’ve expanded their DE/Edge number to 3 and they’re getting Hilson this weekend barring something super weird. That will be the best DE/Edge haul in the country, following what probably was in the 2024 class.

There’s a growing notion that if you want a flex TE to be terrific in Sarkisian’s offense, they need to be homegrown or a transfer who will be patient and work within the system for a few years. I think that plays a role in why Texas seems to really want Terry.

I could see a scenario where they took everyone and just be honest with Mbatchou that they are going to stash and develop him for 2 or three years and then let him wreck shop as a Jr and Sr. while getting him a masters degree at Texas.

As much as we talk about flex tight ends in Sark's offense, he doesn't really use them very much. Juan Davis is maybe the most effective use since he has been here and he really isn't being utilized except for some H Back type routes in the flats. He seems to do better with in line blockers with athleticism. I could see Washington taking over for Helm next season if he gets his strength up, not sure if Niblack is ever going to make a mark since he can't block and we are going to continue to bring in high end receivers.

I have no idea if that would work, but just remember that Georgia and Bama will absolutely be promising earlier playing time.

I don’t know if this valid or not, but I wonder if Texas has a superior case to make for how they’ve helped African immigrants and second generation kids from those families achieve success on and off the field. Similar to what a UW, BYU, or USC can claim with the Pacific Islanders. Maybe many schools have done it to the level of Texas, but it feels like a lot of guys have thrived at UT with that background.

My view is that JT Sanders was a flex TE. He blocked in-line sometimes, but most flex TEs at a high level will give you that. Call it what you want, but they wanted Niblack to fill the Sanders role and it’s not taking shape, yet, at least. Now there’s transfer risk (not saying he’s talking about leaving, just being real looking at it) and, if so, serious money poorly spent.

If you think you can find another JT Sanders willing to sit and learn for a year and then be that guy, you take them out of HS every time. That’s what they’re thinking with Terry.

If you have weapons at both TE and Flex TE, the offense becomes that much more of a juggernaut.

Gbenda and Omenihu would definitely be a testament to that just off the top of my head for recent players. Also Omenihu went from a 3 star to a starter for the Chiefs. The data is definitely there to back that statement up.

I think previous regimes is a driver of the whole point. The ecosystem at Texas for folks with that background is highly conducive for on and off field success. I don’t have an argument as to why, but it seems clear. The fact that Texas academics matter to these parents in ways that they don’t with other demographic sets is also huge due to the differentiation in that matter with the other major programs. Particularly on the engineering side.

I assume Texas has already sorted this stuff and is using the data to their advantage in the overall pitches, but it’s a fun discussion.

Also, keep Gabe Muoneke away from these conversations, probably.

I'm pretty sure it was Okam, but I believe we had one player stay an extra year to complete his degree so med school would be an option if needed. Assuming I'm right about it being Okam, it actually hurt his draft stock. I would think that the selling point of a UT degree (and potentially a grad degree if additional development is needed) would be a hell of a selling point to a lot of parents.

Agree on this-I’ve talked about this before but I’ve been told UT still has a mixed reputation in some corners of the African American community (mainly urban Dallas and Houston to a smaller degree).

It might be that first generation kids don’t have the same inherited baggage, or maybe African parents are indifferent to everything but current academic rankings.  Additionally helpful is that there are first-gen African descent kids on campus for pure academics and it’s not a token presence.  Either way, there’s quite a few success stories to tout if you’re trying to sell the school.

The Stampede: Latest Texas recruiting intel as Longhorns close in on a Top 5 class

Quote

Texas football is ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll for the second straight week and Longhorns recruiting isn't far behind, ranking No. 6 in the nation per the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.

UT is in striking distance of a top three class -- if not higher -- class in 2025, a welcome sight for Texas fans concerned after a less-than-stellar summer on the recruiting front.

Texas has 20 commitments, three of which are five-star recruits, in 2025 for a class grade of 285.49. For comparison, LSU's No. 3-ranked class is at 295, meaning a commitment or two can completely swing the makeup of the standings.

In The Stampede today, Horn247's Jordan Scruggs and Hank South breakdown a notebook of some of the latest happenings for the Longhorns in the class of 2025, including:

-- What's happening with Nebraska defensive line commit Malcolm Simpson after a visit to Austin?

-- Are the Longhorns still in play for elite Oregon cornerback commit Dorian Brew?

-- Borderline five-star edge rusher set to check out Texas this weekend

-- Elite OL and SEC commit looking at return to Austin?

and much, much more ...

Check it out!

Nebraska commit Malcolm Simpson on flip watch?

Texas hosted four-star defensive tackle and Nebraska commit Malcolm Simpson on Saturday for the ULM game. It was the Hitchcock (Texas) product's first-ever night game in Austin and it set a very good impression for the No. 35-ranked defensive lineman in the country, per the 247Sports Composite. Simpson didn't leave with an offer, but both Steve Sarkisian and Kenny Baker spent time with him on Saturday. Simpson is expected back for the Georgia game. The staff's message to Simpson is keep doing the right things on and off the field. A Texas offer wouldn't automatically mean Simpson is going to flip. He still considers himself a firm commit to Nebraska. It would be something to watch closely, though. USC is also working on flipping the in-state defender. (SOUTH)

Any chance for 5-star Ohio State commit Devin Sanchez and Texas?
The Lone Star State's No. 1 overall prospect in 2025, Devin Sanchez is a better defensive back prospect (in my opinion) than any of the others I've covered out of the state since the 2021 season. Because of that previous statement, we understand he's a guy we'll be asked about all the way up until Early Signing Day, especially with the season Texas is having. That said, I decided to try to do some digging over the last few days, and while I was able to confirm that Sanchez and Texas talk over the phone maybe once or twice a month, with the most recent call taking place within an hour of Texas being ranked No. 1 for the first time since 2008.

Although Texas would love few things more than to host the nation's No. 1 cornerback prospect for the Georgia game, a source I spoke with last week made it very clear that Sanchez is locked in with his decision and will only be visiting Ohio State going forward, even with the push from Texas A&M for their Notre Dame game weeks ago, and Texas now pushing for the Georgia game in about a month. Amidst rumors Sanchez could be looking at other visits, he posted on Twitter he's still locked in with the Buckeyes. We've seen crazier things happen in recruiting, but this one should finish in favor of the scarlet and gray. (SCRUGGS)

Texas trending for borderline 5-star edge rusher with visit on deck

Texas edge target Javion Hilson after his official visit to Austin. (Photo: Hank South, 247Sports)

Elite edge rusher Javion Hilson, a former Florida State Seminoles pledge, is tentatively expected in Austin this weekend for an unofficial visit. The No. 32-ranked prospect in the 247Sports Composite has already used his official visit to the Forty Acres back in the summer where he said at the time that Texas was the biggest threat to his Florida State pledge.

"The production," Hilson told Horns247 of the Longhorns. "How they produce the NFL players at my position. Florida state got a lot and then here at Texas they definitely got a lot, and I could easily fit in here and I like the scheme that they run it's just simple."

Texas is certainly considered the trending team talking to multiple sources near the recruitment. However, if Hilson takes his recruitment to December, like he said he would, we could see some back and forth. Florida is obviously working on him as well, and if there's a new staff in Gainesville later this fall, you'd have to imagine Hilson would be atop their board to keep home. We'll see if he sticks to that timeline. (SOUTH)

Anyting 'Brewing' for elite Oregon CB commit?
When Dorian Brew chose Oregon at the end of June, it was another one of the Ducks' impressive summer recruiting wins as Oregon beat out USC and Texas to land the borderline five-star defensive back. Now that months have passed and Texas is rolling on the field, communication has picked up in recent weeks with a Texas source seeming optimistic as recent as this week.

Brew and his camp always did a good job of keeping things in house as he preferred not to reveal his cards, but with the way things seem to be lining up it wouldn't shock me if he makes it in to Austin for one of the remaining home games. I'm unaware of any visits currently on the books, but Texas wants another cornerback in this class and Brew is the state's best other than Sanchez and they'll surely be pushing for the versatile 6-foot, 200 pounder that comes with Olympic bloodlines. (SCRUGGS)

Texas still looking at OL recruits in the class of 2025

Texas offensive tackle target Lamont Rogers on his official visit to Austin. (Photo: Texas Athletics)

The Longhorns could very well be finished along the offensive line with the current class makeup. But both Oklahoma commit Michael Fasusi and potentially Missouri commit Lamont Rogers are worth monitoring as the season goes on. Texas finished second for both in their respective recruitments. When it comes to Rogers, however, the Mesquite (Texas) Horn product's mother told Horns247 over the weekend they "would love to" get to a game in Austin this fall. Nothing is on the calendar at the moment, but the desire to want to check out Texas would indicate a level of interest remaining in the Longhorns. (SOUTH)

Texas A&M commit atop the flip watch meter
Horns247 was on-site in Rosenberg on Thursday to see Sims' Randle Lions take down Fort Bend Marshall by nearly 40 points. After the game Horns247 was able to speak with the interior d-line prospect and he seemed about as positive as he could've been considering he's committed to Texas A&M. After taking in College Station for another unofficial visit on gameday for the Aggies 26-20 home win over Bowling Green, next up on Sims' calendar will be an official visit to Austin for the Mississippi State game. Kenny Baker and Terry Joseph were both at the game as well, and over the last few weeks Horns247 has felt like this has began to trend towards Texas. Sims did say he plans to wait until December to make his final decision, though I do think there is a chance he could flip while on his official visit this weekend but I'm not necessarily expecting it. (SCRUGGS)

Injury update on Texas commit Jaime Ffrench

Texas WR commit Jaime Ffrench. (Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)

Five-star wide receiver Jaime Ffrench injured his finger a couple of weeks ago. Good news for the the Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin product — he'll be back playing in a week. Ffrench remains locked in with the Longhorns. He plans on being in Austin for the Georgia game next month. (SOUTH)

When is Michael Terry III going to announce?
Horns247 has liked Texas' position for the nation's No. 1 athlete prospect, Michael Terry III, since catching up with sources following his Longhorns official visit. With several timelines being set for the end of summer or early school year and Terry still being an uncommitted prospect, it's been clear he's being patient with his decision but it hasn't changed anything for Horns247 as we still heavily lean towards the burnt orange in this one. In recent weeks, Terry has named December as the month he plans to announce his decision in, but several sources Horns247 has spoken with believe the decision will happen before we get into the month of December. It would make sense as Terry seemed a little confused when asked about his timeline, as he said he'd get it done in late December which he probably said not knowing that Early Signing Day has pushed up to Dec. 4 starting with this recruiting cycle. We've written a few times at this point; but regardless of when a decision happens, Horns247 continues to lean towards the Longhorns in this one. (SCRUGGS)

It was probably justified at the time because we were losing recruits to other programs, and it was premature because Baker needed time to build the relationships and because we are now the number 1 team in America, and all that that implies.

Nansen and PK both coach the LB/Edge while Baker is focused on DTs. That being said, I don't think these are hard and fast lines. Like the much discussed change from calling the outside position on the DL the "defensive end" to the "edge," there is a lot of cross over between the position groups. I'm sure Baker is in on recruiting DE/Edge if it makes sense for him to be a part of the process.

Makes total sense. I guess the point I'm making is that I don't know how much recruiting success of Jackson/Orogbo/Hilson (fingers crossed) can be attributed to Baker. I'm happy things have turned around on DT recruiting, but the jury's still out on Baker as a recruiter and a coach. However, the data points are trending in a positive direction, which is welcome and reassuring after an objectively shaky start.

The way I understand it this year is Baker coaches the whole line now as far as pass rush goes.

Coach Baker has Vernon Broughton playing damn good ball, when I had already given up on him. The recruiting questions are legit but he has found a way to get something out of Vernon. Hoping he can work some magic with the young pups. January looks like he will be a good one, while it’s looking like Bledsoe and Mitchell are on the verge of washing out. Bryant definitely needs to come on soon.

Houston with the oil industry has always had a strong West African, primarily Nigeria and Ghana, community.    Not surprising we have always done well with that demo.  Those guys parents are almost always professionals (engineers, doctors etc) that will actually value the relatively unique education/athletic combination that Texas offers.
