Russell is a guy that blew up in a short period of time. The idea that there's also another Michael Huff on the same SMU commitment list not believable. They're having to do some extra work to get the headcount they want at a few spots due to current roster depth of those spots.

The distance between "de-commitment watch" and "not a Texas commit" is literally an ellipsis.

How long can it possibly take to read nothing.

I don't remember that. Must have been a slow period for clicks and views or something. The biggest non-story of this cycle will be flipping that player from SMU. The bigger deal there is why in the fuck we are stooping to that level of talent reach in the first place.

Two things happened with this post.

The first is that you quoted the spider2y dipshit and I read what he wrote and agreed with it, which caused this to happen:

image.png.41e4c2b2e6a7c4c8b5e28f1177c1c6ab.png

And second, I found myself wondering if I'd been time-warped back to the Hornfans recruiting board, circa 2000. Christ. North Shore has been fool's gold in recruiting for the better part of a decade. Outside of Chaisson and a guard that went to Bama (kind of decent), every highly touted recruit from there has been a scorching bust.

Lunchtime Recruiting Juice

While you guys down Chick-fil-a, figured I would provide some juice to go with it.

Dakorien Moore, WR, Duncanville (Texas) High

Upping my percentage from 65% to 75% headed into the weekend OV to Oregon.

Myron Charles, DL, Port Charlotte (Fla.) High

The 6-4, 290 pounder and his mother had a positive call with Steve Sarkisian Monday. This one still sets up to be a FSU vs. Texas decision headed into the OV to Tallahassee this weekend. The Charles' have been in communication with Texas more since the OV than prior.

Riley Pettijohn, LB, McKinney (Texas) High

My percentage on the 6-2, 215 pound linebacker with a PR of 10.77 in the 100 meters is 70% headed into the weekend OV to Texas A&M. OTF believes this will be a Texas vs. Texas A&M decision with Ohio State third.

Kevin Wynn, DL, Greensboro (Ga.) Greene County

Wynn had a positive OV follow up call with Steve Sarkisian this week. Wynn's father wasn't able to make the trip over the weekend, but he has since spoken with Sarkisian as well. Texas is thought to have a legitimate shot in this one headed into the FSU visit weekend.

Kade Phillips, DB, Missouri City (Texas) Hightower

It's Texas or LSU for the Houston area defensive back. LSU's Corey Raymond continues the hard sell at cornerback. Phillips likes that message. Texas is the preference of a couple of people in the circle, and has been for a while.

Javion Hilson, EDGE, Cocoa (Fla.) High

One thing that hasn't changed since the Texas visit, Hilson's mom would like for her son to get out of the state for college. Experience something new and different. Hilson was once an Alabama pledge prior to Saban retiring and the flip to FSU.

John Mills and Nick Brooks

OTF is still hearing positive chatter in both recruitments. The duo are on different decision timelines, however.

The gist of Scrugg's note below -

Tynook Hines:  Likely Notre Dame at this time;  Texas unlikely to push hard, unless Ffrench/Lockett prospects don't look good.

Kiotti Armstrong:  Canceling Texas visit

Nick Townsend:  Bama leads after their official, but expects Texas to win out after his visit

Kaleb Edwards:  Townsend much higher priority;  Edwards has a bunch of visits, not sure where things stand

Michael Fasusi:  OU had very good visit;  now it's likely a Texas / OU battle;  still expect Texas to win out

Michael Terry:  Oregon visit coming up;  likely a Tx/OU decision;  expect Texas to likely win out

Wednesday night recruiting notes
A bevy of recruiting notes on a few top targets for the Longhorns.
Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247)

Happy Humpday!

I've been speaking with sources throughout the day and figured I'd throw these notes all into one story instead of waiting to release some of the new intel in tomorrow's June 21-23 official visit primer.

Let's get right into it!

The video player is currently playing an ad. You can skip the ad in 5 sec with a mouse or keyboard

— After previously having a date set for July 3rd, Spring Dekaney four-star wide receiver Tanook Hines tells me he is now committing on July 5th. Notre Dame, USC, and Texas are expected to be who the decision comes down to, but schools like Arizona State, Baylor, and Texas A&M are hanging around on the periphery as well.

Before Hines started his June official visit circuit, sources in Houston were confident that Notre Dame was the leader in the recruitment with USC running in second place, and the Longhorns in third place but with some distance between the Trojans and the burnt orange's spot in the recruitment.

Now that Hines has tripped to all three of those programs, the sources believe the pecking order remains the same, even though he has his last official visit coming up this weekend when he'll make the trip to Waco to see Baylor. Although there could be some jockeying for the lead spot between now and when Hines announces a commitment in the first week of July, the sources in Houston are confident Hines would choose the Fighting Irish if the recruitment was to end today, and that it would be USC who would finish in second place.

As far as where Texas could shake that up, they'd have to really push for him and prioritize him over the next two weeks if they want to be more realistic in this recruitment. That said, I'm not sure if I see Texas doing that. Dakorien Moore and Kaliq Lockett both still lack concrete commitment dates, but we're expecting those decisions to come before the start of their senior seasons and would be somewhat surprised if either commits before Hines in the first week of July. Jaime Ffrench, the third five-star pass catcher the Longhorns are after, has a commitment date set for August 30 in honor of his mother's birthday.

That said, I'm not sure how realistic it would be for Texas to push for Hines' commitment over the next two weeks. Depending on how things go this weekend on Lockett or Ffrench's official visits, we could see Hines' priority rise, but for now I'm not necessarily expecting it and am leaning towards the Fighting Irish in this recruitment.

— Although we highly expected it, today I received official word back from a source in Southeast Texas that Jasper Top247 TE and Texas A&M commit Kiotti Armstrong has canceled his remaining official visits that were set for LSU and Texas this weekend.

Armstrong still having his Texas official visit to use is notable and is something we'll be tracking throughout the fall, but for right now we're still in the summer and I think it's way too early to just expect Armstrong to officially visit Texas in the season. The Aggies are looking to take three tight ends this cycle, and with Armstrong already in the fold with most expecting him to be the headliner of the Aggies' tight end haul, I'd expect A&M to get aggressive with keeping him committed if buzz starts to emerge about Armstrong taking an in-season visit to Austin.

Long story short, I think it will be much harder for Texas to flip Armstrong than it was for Texas to flip his teammate Ty'Anthony Smith last cycle, and largely because Smith's flip was made easier due to the coaching transition that was taking place in College Station leading up to early signing day.

— As reported yesterday, Hines and his fellow Spring Dekaney Top247 ATH teammate Nick Townsend had always planned to commit together in a ceremony on the same day, and in speaking with Townsend this evening he confirmed with me he'll be making his college decision on July 5th as well.

Townsend and Hines were both actually on campus at Texas A&M yesterday, but the trip to College Station only happened because Dekaney competed in a school 7on7 tournament camp that the Aggies held at their facilities. It could've been a notable data point for Townsend to have been in College Station after spending the weekend at Texas A&M for an official visit with the Aggies, but sources in Houston don't believe the official trip to A&M moved the needle much for Townsend.

Heading into this past weekend Alabama was the perceived leader with the Longhorns in second place. Coming out of the weekend, the same remains. Although some might've thought the Aggies improved their chances with Townsend after the official visit, sources in Houston felt as if Kiotti Armstrong's commitment taking place while Townsend was also on campus only hurt the Aggies chances, with those same sources now viewing Texas A&M as being in fourth place behind USC, Texas, and Alabama.

The Trojans are interesting in the recruitment because when I went out to the school in May it was clear Alabama was in first, Texas in second, then a gap before Texas A&M and USC. Sources still expect the decision to come down to the Crimson Tide or the Longhorns, but it's notable that USC jumped the Aggies in the pecking order.

Regardless of what the pecking order is, Texas is set up incredibly well for Townsend's official visit this weekend. Not only is it the last visit before a decision is made, but the vision with Townsend and Texas is much clearer with Kiotti Armstrong now out of the picture. It's clear he's TE1, and we expect the burnt orange carpet to be rolled out this weekend.

Nick Townsend (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
Although Alabama would be the victor if the recruitment was to end today, it is still a very much winnable recruitment for Texas. A good if not great visit will be crucial for the Longhorns to win this one, but if things end up going well this weekend, sources believe Townsend will end up at Texas.

Townsend's parents would prefer him to go out of state for college rather than staying in Texas, but that's due to his parents wanting him to get a true college experience away from home without the ability to drive a few hours to Houston if he were to stay in the Lone Star State. On the other side of that, in speaking with Townsend and folks around him, he has a preference of staying closer to home in order to be a shorter distance to his family and friends. That's notable, as although his parents are definitely a part of the recruitment, the decision will ultimately be left up for the 6-foot-3, 235 pounder to make.

I'm holding off on entering in a 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction until after Townsend's visit to Texas, but if I was forced to enter in a prediction right now it would be in favor of the Longhorns as I do think Townsend will end up at Texas.

Texas would've liked to sign two tight ends in 2024, but only ended up with Jordan Washington. Although Washington is great and I think will have a very successful career in Austin, he's one of only scholarship three tight ends expected to return next season alongside Will Randle and Spencer Shannon. That, combined with the fact that Armstrong is now off the board, makes Townsend now a "need" instead of a "want", or at least it does in my eyes.

I'm not forgetting about Kaleb Edwards either, but Townsend is a much higher caliber prospect in my opinion and with Edwards having official visit stops to Alabama, Auburn, Oregon, Texas, UCLA, and Washington, I'm not sure of exactly where he's leaning and don't necessarily feel tremendous about where Texas is at with him as things currently stand.

All of that said, Texas has won high stakes recruitments like this before, and I'm expecting them to win this one with a strong official visit this weekend. With the tight end situation in Austin being where it's at, Townsend is just as important as any of the other visitors seeing the Forty Acres this weekend, and with Armstrong now off the board, I expect the Longhorns to maximize the opportunity as they look to overtake Alabama's lead a little over two weeks from the decision date.

— In speaking with sources over the last few days, I think it was probably too premature on my end to expect Michael Fasusi's recruitment to come down to Texas and Texas A&M.

Oklahoma hosted Fasusi on an official visit this past weekend and picked up a ton of traction, and I now think this will come down to the Red River Rivals. Both Texas and Oklahoma have had more dialogue in this recruitment than the A&M staff, and I think that will stand for something when the decision comes, even with Fasusi's long standing relationship with Texas A&M off-field staffer Joe Hamilton. I'm not entirely ruling out the Aggies and think they will be one of the three finalists alongside Texas and Oklahoma, but in speaking with sources it's pretty clear that Oklahoma did a ton of damage in this recruitment this past weekend with those same sources viewing the Sooners as the main competition to the Longhorns.

I'm still expecting Texas to win this recruitment, but Oklahoma has certainly made it more competitive than this has been in a while. Bill Bedenbaugh and the Sooners sold Fasusi and his family on going to Oklahoma and what that would like, and coming out of the visit I'm told Fasusi and his family fully trust that he would be developed on and off the field and more than ready for the NFL if he was to end up at Oklahoma.

I want to make it clear that Fasusi and his family like Texas a lot, but up to this point Michael and his father are the only members of the Fasusi family that have seen the Forty Acres in person. I'm expecting the Longhorns to do a great job on the official visit and achieve just as much success as Oklahoma in making the whole family comfortable with the outcome if Fasusi was to go to Texas, but felt like it was very worth it to lay out that Oklahoma is making this recruitment closer then it's been in a while.

It is also worth mentioning that Fasusi's best friend and Lewisville teammate Sean Hutton is expected to choose Oklahoma as his walk-on destination over PWO offers from Texas and Texas A&M. Click HERE for why this is notable. Hutton, who's father is an alumni of Oklahoma, is visiting Norman this weekend and some folks wouldn't be surprised to see him announce a commitment in favor of the Sooners. Just because Hutton is trending to Norman doesn't mean Fasusi is a lock for Oklahoma or anything of that sort, but potentially having his best friend in Hutton in Norman certainly doesn't hurt the Sooners' chances.

Fasusi will be the only uncommitted offensive line visitor on campus this weekend as he'll be spending time with Kyle Flood alongside all three of Texas' o-line commits: Jackson Christian, Jordan Coleman, and Devin Coleman. We expect all three of the commits to be peer recruiting Fasusi throughout the weekend in a team effort.

Fasusi doesn't have a concrete timeline for a decision, but we expect it to happen before his senior season starts at the end of August and expect the decision to be for Texas. The Longhorns are set up well with the last official visit, and with Kyle Flood's track record of hitting on his No. 1 offensive line targets — Kelvin Banks, Brandon Baker, etc. — we like Texas' chances of landing Fasusi when it's all said and done.

Michael Terry III on his Texas official visit
— Like Townsend, San Antonio Alamo Heights five-star ATH Michael Terry III was another prospect who officially visited Texas A&M this past weekend.

The Aggies made an interesting pitch to the do-it-all five-star playmaker by making it clear that they see him as a wide receiver, and that if he was to end up in College Station, he would solely be used as a wide receiver. Although some felt as if that resonated well with Terry, I'm told the same remains as far as expecting the decision to come down to Texas and Oregon.

Nebraska is lingering as well and have consistently shown more love than any other program in the recruitment, but in talking with sources in San Antonio the read I get is that the Huskers are currently in third place with the Aggies in fourth place, or at least as things currently stand.

With the decision still expected to come down to the Longhorns and the Ducks, Terry's official visit to Oregon that's set for this weekend looms extremely large. Like Texas A&M with Myles Davis, the Ducks have another former San Antonian who's friends with Terry in Tyler Turner. I expect Turner to host Terry this weekend like how Davis hosted Terry this past weekend.

Although those relationships likely slightly boost the chances for those programs, it is worth mentioning that Terry has two former Alamo Heights teammates and friends already in Austin as walk-ons in the Texas football program. I'm not expecting it to factor in much, if at all in the recruitment but I think it's safe to say Texas has the best connections when it comes to the friends department.

Oregon has made things interesting by recruiting Terry to play the running back position, but in talking with sources in San Antonio coming out of Terry's June 7-9 official visit to Texas, I've consistently been told that his preferred positional plan would be to continue being used as an offensive swiss army knife type of player, identically to how he's used at the high school level.

The swiss army knife positional projection is exactly what the Longhorns have been pitching to the nation's No. 1 ranked ATH prospect since his official visit. Because of that along with a few other reasons, I felt like Texas had the best chances to win the recruitment when we wrote The Stampede the Monday (June 10) after Terry's Texas official visit concluded. Now that I've caught up with sources after the Texas A&M visit happened and with the last scheduled official visit set to take place this weekend, I still like Texas' chances here and expect the Longhorns to win the recruitment with Oregon finishing in second place.

Fuck that nonsense. Nahlin will continue to step on his own dick and Wells seems nice enough, he's just an awful listen/watch.

I'm guessing he's saying Bobby should get him because he'd fit right in and provide value. A's hire A's.

It's not like OTF covers all of college football. They cover Texas only. Two full time recruiting guys is already almost too much. What is Scruggs going to cover that Gerry and CJ don't already repeat 15 times a week now?

Would allow Gerry to do what he loves the most, travel throughout the Southeast to cover football and recruiting. Maybe CJ or Scruggs could cover some of the Arizona/Cali market in addition to Texas.

OTF really can’t hire Scruggs without hiring Flatt as well. Kind of a package deal.

Yeah, SMU’s strategy for landing whales is to offer early, try to get a commit and hold on until signing day. It’s a tough and frustrating strategy, but when it hits (Bijan Robinson and Kevin Durant), it’s beautiful.

Our response tactic is to take closer looks at kids committed to TCU and SMU to see if there’s anything we want there.

Not only that, but Bijan gave a silent commitment to tOSU, so he actually flipped to Texas.

No, I can’t. It’s definitely a high-miss-rate strategy (as we see real time).

I’m trying to think of guys that could have gone anywhere, going to small programs (not hidden gems excavated by small programs, which happens all the time). Robert Strait to Baylor and Micah Parker to TT are all that come to mind right now.

This is correct. They were teammates at HP, but Layne was older and already in Austin when Walker was deciding where to go. More importantly, Rusty Russell was still Highland Park’s head coach when Layne was at Texas and Walker was a senior at HP. Again, SMU hired Russell as a backfield coach in 1945 specifically so that they could steal Doak from Texas.

Jerrod Douglas going from Converse Judson to Baylor back in the day was another head scratcher. That dude was the truth. A lot of guys going to smaller schools was usually grade related or being a borderline criminal.

So I think my point is, that if you can't cite any examples, how could you say something like you said earlier "When it hits it's beautiful?" Becuase it's literally never hit for them.

Also, I think you mean Micah Hudson.

Jeez, these threads can take bizarre turns, and I hate contributing, but here I am. Before communication was as “sophisticated” and as frequent as it is today (answering machines), the scoop is Trooper Taylor (at Baylor at the time) called Douglas’ house, and left a message that he was a Texas assistant and they would no longer be pursuing Jerrod. JD got the message, and committed to Baylor. It apparently really was that fucking stupid. Bucky Godbolt was as pissed as anyone I’d ever seen following our obliteration of Baylor that weird year we played them at 10am on either Thanksgiving or T+1, screaming “We didn’t have to cheat!” over and over again.

Jerrod Douglas going from Converse Judson to Baylor back in the day was another head scratcher. That dude was the truth. A lot of guys going to smaller schools was usually grade related or being a borderline criminal.

Grades was the factor there.

Elite 11 rankings, by the Elite 11 staff, 247 staff (writers), and On3.  Overall, Lacey did better in the Accuracy portion on Day 2, and worse (relatively) on the Pro Day portion.

Also remember - they have a total of 20 QBs there, and 11 of them will end up as THE "Elite 11".
