He had a pretty gnarly injury. Feels like he had too little of an impact anyway to draw that kind of ire.

Where does Texas go next for defensive line prospects?

Hank South, 247

Notes:

-Still in hot pursuit of Myron Charles. He'll be back to Texas "soon"

-Texas is the favorite for DJ Sanders

-Texas may really try to flip Chace Sims from aggy; has a legit shot to do so if they push

-Zion Williams is a long shot

-Texas wavering on trying to flip Coleman from Auburn now (hard to keep track of who he's even committed to these days)

Spoiler

— Where does Texas go next for defensive line prospects?

Texas got a big win on the recruiting trail when the Longhorns flipped Josiah Sharma from Oregon at last week's Texas Bash event. With Sharma in the fold, Kenny Baker and Co. are going after some big fish to join him in the class.

With Texas flipping four-star defensive lineman Josiah Sharma from the Oregon Ducks last week, where do the Longhorns go from here at the position?

Horns247 has checked in with several sources over the last week to gauge who will get the closest looks over the next few months.

— Four-star Myron Charles, Port Charlotte (Fla.) — Florida State commit

Texas is continuing to put its foot on the gas in Charles' recruitment, and the interest appears to be reciprocating. As Horns247 reported last week, Charles was originally expected to return to Austin for the Texas Bash but had to reschedule. He was at Miami last weekend. Charles tells Horns247 he plans to get back to Texas "soon."

— Four-star DJ Sanders, Bellville

A decision will be made at some point this month for the big Bellville lineman with Texas, Michigan and Texas A&M all still heavily in the mix. Contact with the Longhorns has remained steady. My pick is on UT at this point, but each of the three finalists remains in the picture ahead of a decision sometime before the season.

— Three-star Chace Sims, Richmond Randle — Texas A&M commit

Don't be shocked to see Texas turn up the heat on the 6-foot-2.5-inch, 305-pounder this fall. Sims had high interest in the Longhorns before his pledge to the Aggies, but UT hadn't put the full-court press on. That could change in the coming months. Sims could be in line to take an official visit to the Forty Acres this season.

— Four-star Zion Williams, Lufkin — LSU commit

There's been no indication that Williams is wavering from his commitment to the Tigers.

But it should be noted that he still has an official visit to Texas in his back pocket if he chooses to use it this fall. Bo Davis and other factors are playing into LSU's grip on his pledge. We'll see if Texas tries to chip away at things in the coming months.

— Four-star Antonio Coleman, Saraland (Ala.) — Auburn commit

He's de-committed from either Alabama or Auburn three times so far, so there's no harm in thinking it could happen again. Like Sims and Williams, Coleman has an official visit to Texas if the Longhorns want to schedule one. That will be the big question, though: Will Texas even push to try and stay involved? Coleman had a good visit to Texas last week with teammate and UT pledge KJ Lacey. — HANK SOUTH

You know it, I know it, everyone but Jonah knows it.

So we are recruiting him as a safety and possibly driving off a legitimate safety, hoping that Jonah doesn't play MLB and doesn't end up at LB.

I don't think that's fully accurate regarding Tilmon. They're not pushing him away. He seems to regard Utah as the better fit.

Utah is a funny school in terms of the way they recruit. A lot of guys they land have bigger brand options and still choose to go there and often stick. Not always, of course, but it seems like that's the case more often than not. I do like that Texas and Utah are on some of the same guys. Utah evaluates really well, in my opinion.

As to Jonah Williams, I have made my arguments for why I think he's a candidate to be a bust or non-entity in college. He's going to ultimately be a LB if he'll let himself grow out. Many people think he could be an excellent LB. That's what drove his early rankings. He comes back later and tells the services and the coaches that he's a safety and that won't be changing. He's also not in love with football. And he's an MLB risk.

So there are a lot of red flags there. If he doesn't cost a program a ton of money (but he probably will), he's a quality lottery ticket. He will boost hype and rankings of the class, which helps the overall class, and he could well wind up spinning to the right position and discovering that he can make millions there. There are worse takes with that in mind.

I'm all for taking a flier on the guy if he positively impacts recruiting overall on the defensive side of the ball. However, if he doesn't help bring in anyone else of significance and ties up needed NIL money, those aren't great ramifications of a commitment to Texas.

He's gifted enough to provide true impact for football and/or baseball. I'm skeptical he'll be able to do both at a highly effective level (although, since he doesn't play QB as many pitchers do, maybe he can), but I'm even more skeptical he'll forgo the MLB draft - especially with his pitching potential as a LHP.

What's interesting to me in this situation is that Whittingham has flat out said he won't be there that much longer and they've named Scalley the successor. Obviously we've seen coaches stay beyond what was expected after naming a HCIW but surely that has an effect on some recruits?

Scalley is the mastermind on defense and has been there forever (in part thanks to his loose lips in texts / team meetings). Shouldn't change much of anything there.

Adding Lockett and Sanders moves us above aggy to #8, via 247 calculator.

Also, looking at the 247 composite, Cunningham and Mills are almost composite 4*'s.

It could be one of the best recruiting runs ever if all goes as Texas football hopes it will in the month of August. Here, Horns247 breaks down five big decisions expected in the next 25 days.
Horns247 Staff

Texas football sits at No. 13 in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings. If all goes as the Longhorns hope over the next three-plus weeks, UT could find itself in the top five, if not top three, come kickoff against Colorado State.

That's because 5 five-star Texas football targets are set to announce decisions in the month of August, and the Longhorns are high on the list for each of them.

To put it all in perspective, if all five decisions go UT football's way, that would put Texas at 296.91, good for what's currently the No. 3 class in the country behind Ohio State and Alabama.

And that's not even including other non-five-star targets that will likely be announcing their decisions prior to their senior seasons.

But, for this exercise, we're going to focus on the five-star recruits.

Here, Horns247's Jordan Scruggs and Hank South each give their outlines of the 5 five-star recruitments with decision dates set in the next 25 days, where we believe Texas football stands, and a brief prediction, or at least feel, to how we think it unfolds.

Check it out!

Alamo Heights five-star athlete Michael Terry III —

Decision date: TBD, prior to his senior season

When Texas offered at Junior Day, there was a sense that the Longhorns were going to be a significant factor in the San Antonio product's recruitment. Terry himself said UT was in his top three at the time. The 6-foot-3, 217-pound, do-it-all athlete returned for an official visit this summer and then again at the end of July for the Texas Bash Pool Party. Texas is pushing to close on this recruitment, pitching the uniqueness of his skillset, comparing him to guys like Roschon Johnson, Jordan Whittington, and Ja'Tavion Sanders all in one. Oregon and Nebraska are also going pedal to the metal here, both hosting him as well in recent days, but the Longhorns in particular seem to be pushing the right buttons down the stretch. (SOUTH)

This has been a Texas vs. Oregon battle since the start of the summer, and the notion has remained the same regardless of which visits have been taken elsewhere this summer. The Longhorns continue to push the right buttons in this recruitment, as Steve Sarkisian and a core group of some of his best staffers have combined for a team effort in this one. With Tashard Choice, Chris Gilbert, AJ Milwee, Chris Jackson, and Brandon Harris all involved in Terry's recruitment, I felt as if the Longhorns left the month of June as the favorite, and the feeling has remained the same leaving the month of July. I've liked and continue to like the Longhorns over the Ducks in this one. (SCRUGGS)

Horns247 says: We like Texas to win out

Galveston Ball five-star linebacker/safety Jonah Williams —

Decision date: July 24

Will it be Texas, LSU, Oregon, Texas A&M, or USC 19 days from now? This recruitment has been one of the more wild ones of the 2025 cycle, particularly for a recruit that keeps things relatively low-key. In the spring everyone predicted Oklahoma, earlier in the summer it was Texas A&M, then Oregon caught fire. The only thing missing was a verbal commitment to any of those programs. As we sit here less than three weeks out, the Aggies still hold the edge on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, but this recruitment is challenging to predict. The Longhorns are the only program that did not get an official visit this summer, however, Williams spent the day on the Forty Acres at the end of July for the Texas Bash Pool Party. There, we believe, UT made things much more interesting in terms of Texas' chances in this one. The Longhorns, led by safeties coach Blake Gideon, are working to close, and appear to be gaining ground quickly. Obviously Williams is a baseball prospect, too, and could opt for the MLB all together. Texas is treating things as if Williams is going to play football and baseball at the collegiate level. (SOUTH)

With USC being the school in fifth place according to just about everyone you talk to, the Trojans would be the school that would surprise the most people out of the options in Williams' top five. With Oregon picking up a commitment from a five-star safety in Trey McNutt over the weekend, I think we could see the Ducks slip a bit as I do think a big part of Williams' recruitment is being "the guy" in the secondary class he decides to join. That is and this is total speculation on my end, but I do think this decision will come down to LSU, Texas, and Texas A&M, with a few sources believing Williams' decision won't be made until minutes before he goes public with his announcement. Regardless of the contradicting info you here when it comes to contenders or the ultimate decision, it's clear Texas has only improved their chances since getting the No. 7 overall prospect on campus at the end of July as they look to continue trending in the right direction several weeks out from the decision. (SCRUGGS)

Horns247 says: Texas is trending up

Lewisville five-star offensive tackle Michael Fasusi —

Decision date: July 21

Texas offensive line coach Kyle Flood has put together a stout group along the OL thus far. There are two big fish — rankings-wise — still out there, though. Fasusi, the No. 12 overall prospect in the country, will announce his decision on July 21, with a top five of Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Texas A&M. Of note, the 6-foot-5, 295-pounder took a trip out to Florida at the end of July as well. We believe this is coming down to a Red River (Recruiting) Shootout. Our picks remain on Burnt Orange, but this is a recruitment that's subject to have some twists and turns over the next two weeks. You could make a strong argument for either program having the upper hand. We're sticking with our Texas prediction for now. (SOUTH)

Although Oklahoma stole a lot of momentum and buzz coming out Fasusi's official visit to Norman the June 14-16 weekend, Texas continues to hold some optimism in this one. There continues to be optimism on the other side of the Red River as well, as both rivals hold some confidence as both Texas and Oklahoma have rightfully been able to call themselves the leader at different times over the last few years. Led by two great O-Line coaches in Bill Bedenbaugh and Kyle Flood, this decision is heavily expected to come down to Texas and Oklahoma and would come as a shock if a commitment is given anywhere else. With playing time, culture, and NIL being a focal point with Fasusi being an elite left tackle prospect, he's still yet to make the decision, but, as quiet as things have been, Horns247 continues to like Texas as the landing spot. (SCRUGGS)

Horns247 says: We think Texas ultimately gets it done

Sachse five-star wide receiver Kaliq Lockett —

Decision date: Aug. 7

Two days from now, five-star wide receiver Kaliq Lockett will make his decision known. Down the stretch Texas is battling Alabama and Florida State, among several others, to try and close on the 6-foot-2, 175-pounder. The last five-star, in-state wide receiver to announce his decision dimmed July 4th fireworks for Texas fans, as Dakorien Moore spurned the Longhorns for Oregon. Lockett, we believe, could reignite some sparklers if you have any left over and your HOA is ok with it. Texas has been pressing to land Lockett regardless of Moore's decision throughout the summer, and has found itself in prime position 48 hours out. Alabama and Florida State aren't giving up, though. (SOUTH)

Two days out from the decision date of the nation's No. 2-ranked wide receiver prospect, and there's a lot to like about where things have trended over the last few weeks of the summer. Texas entered the summer months in a battle with Florida State and Texas A&M, but as recruiting picked up for the Crimson Tide, Alabama slowly found themselves creeping in the mix and earned an official visit from Lockett following the commitment of Keelon Russell. While the Crimson Tide made things competitive for a moment or two, this has Chris Jackson and the Longhorns written all over it as Horns247 is expecting Lockett to become Jackson's second five-star receiver commit of his Texas tenure. (SCRUGGS)

Horns247 says: Texas has the inside track

Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin five-star wide receiver Jaime Ffrench —

Decision date: Aug. 30

Ffrench is another five-star receiver with an August decision. Texas has come from behind in this one after offering in January, well after any of the other finalists that include Miami, LSU, and Tennessee. The one-time Alabama commit first visited Austin in April, at which point he said the Longhorns vaulted up into his top three with the Vols and Ohio State at the time. The Buckeyes were considered the favorite early on in the spring. Entering the summer, Ffrench had made it clear Texas was in pole position. However, after his official visit slate, Ffrench backed off leaders and said everyone was even ahead of his Aug. 30 decision. As things stand now on Aug. 5, we believe this is a Texas-Miami battle, and we are still giving the edge to the Longhorns. I placed a Crystal Ball in favor of Texas for Ffrench ahead of his official visit to the Forty Acres in June, and I still stand by that prediction with some confidence. (SOUTH)

The last five-star Texas target to make his decision in August but certainly not the least, there continues to be confidence out of Austin in regards to the nation's No. 4 ranked receiver prospect. With Texas battling Miami, LSU, and Tennessee for the five-star, Horns247 believes the decision will come down to playing in Austin or Coral Gables. Horns247's Hank South threw in a Crystal Ball prediction back at the start of Ffrench's June 21-23 official visit to Texas, and in the time since not much has changed with how we view the recruitment ending. Horns247 believes the Longhorns will end up winning out, but it certainly won't be an easy battle as the Hurricanes are just as well-equipped in the NIL department as some of the nation's best. (SCRUGGS)
