2 highly paid DB coaches and 1 commit, a low 3 star

Chester actually seems to be underrated, imo. I don't usually tout "underrated 3 star!!!", but he does seem like he'll be a good one. Dude is fluid, studies the position/game, and has long arms. He comes off as a safe bet.

Just got Fong'd to LSU.  Woof.

He has always wanted to be a Tiger, they slowed played him til he was ready to commit here.  Phillips still stings because he seemed like a steal.  But I gotta give him credit for wanting to play a certain position and finding the school who have sold him at that position.

Gerry just said Arkansas has recruited Anding the best out if any staff and that he's getting a heavy to push to LSU from family/school.  Nothing about Texas.

Don’t know why we just wouldn’t let him start off at CB like he wanted. It’s not like we’re killing it at that position in this class anyway.

Because he's not a CB. LSU is taking him because they have no pure CBs in the class, all safeties. LSU said please we will let you play CB, when Texas said you're a safety fit long term. The kid is betting on himself.

This is not a wise move.

Notre Dame suspended its men’s swimming program Thursday for at least one year after an external review found members of the team violated NCAA rules by wagering among themselves on results of their competitions and failed to “treat one another with dignity and respect.”

“In order to ensure that this behavior ends and to rebuild a culture of dignity, respect, and exemplary conduct, we have decided to suspend the men’s swimming program for at least one academic year,” athletic director Pete Bevacqua said in a statement.

Notre Dame did not reveal details of the review done by a law firm.

According to a person with knowledge of the situation, members of the team had set up a makeshift, internal sportsbook where athletes could wager on the times posted by themselves or teammates at meets. Athletes were not found to have bet on opposing teams or on any other Notre Dame athletic events, the person said.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Notre Dame was not making the contents of the report public.

The person said more than 60% of the returning team, which includes 25 swimmers, took part in betting on the performances of members of the team. The review also revealed some members of the team had bet among themselves on events such as the Super Bowl and March Madness basketball tournament games.

Somebody help me out here please.  What the fuck does it mean when someone says woof?

yikes

Would someone like Chris Gilbert be built for a GM or GM type role in college football? That could be a pretty easy transition done after the season if it makes sense. Or maybe he’s already doing some of that stuff in his “assistant to the head coach” role. Would be interested to know what that roles looks like day to day.

Just money-whip somebody from another school that is doing a good job. Kinda like Ole Miss did to us. Let Gilbert stay where he is.

July and August have basically sucked all the dick for Texas football.

We hired Bill Rees from Notre Dame to serve as Harris's baby sitter.

Considering Bill Rees does his job remotely and doesn't even live in Austin, that must be a really cushy babysitting job.

Yeah, doesn't seem like his job is babysitting.

According to sources, Rees will work remotely, focusing on scouting prospects, evaluating the Texas roster, and analyzing opponents.

At this point I’d rather see Sark go get Glasscock back or poach Malchow from Oregon.

Yeah, Texas needs to upgrade the CB and Safety coaches, as well as the player personnel staff. If Sark does so next offseason, Texas is in a great spot as a program with all of the other advantages at its disposal. The jury is still out on Baker, but the other three are glaring issues.

The point is that Sark should have seen it earlier….  Now if they do good this year ok,..   but I’m questioning if the safeties learned jack shit from either coach.

Sounds like a pretty sweet gig.

Well, it is pretty obvious that LSU is making promises that it can't keep. The question is when the chickens will come home to roost.

How about not making any further hires of convenience? What the fuck is this train of thought anyway? Every other staff worth a shit in the country is raiding each other and the NFL for what is perceived to be the best and the brightest and you want to promote a guy that gets along with old high school coaching buddies in Dallas. Awesome.

I think Sark saw it coming plenty early, but he (mistakenly?) has trusted PK to fix it.

Someone pointed out that PK apparently doesn't long to be HC somewhere, and that may be so. It means to me that he doesn't have the attitude to be in charge of the entire Defense, either.

Sark is a really, really high-quality Offense coach. Like a lot of the type, he seems to have a tendency to - I hate to say "ignore", but - not pay enough attention to the defensive part of the game. He has two full-time jobs, as both HC and being his own OC, so he simply doesn't have enough hours in his days to ride herd on the D as well.

I understand his relationship with Kwiatkowsky goes back quite a way, but the fact is the D has not reached the heights that the O has. I also understand that it has certainly gotten better, and most of us believe it will be better still, this season.

Is that enough? Maybe, maybe not. If the DB crew doesn't improve from last year, it appears to me we're going to see the same result: win almost all our games, but have one or two where we just can't stop our opponents' passing attacks, and if the O doesn't crush it... well, 12-2 is a whole lot better than we've seen in a long, long time.

Season's getting close, and we'll be talking about coaching and play far more than we talk about recruiting.

Not really for the recruiting thread, but I think Sark bringing in Nansen was bigger than just bringing in a LB coach.

It’s not really the same thing. Patterson wasn’t hired to the coaching staff. I don’t know what his duties as an analyst were exactly, but it was never clear how much he was even around the facilities in between open mic night sets

True, but pretty sure he was on the sidelines in games and at practices.

For whatever reason, I got the impression that PK didn't care for the situation, and may not have been on board with it at all.

For sure, I'd take Patterson as DC right this instant, but in't gonna happen.

Its funny to see this board flip out in regards to recruiting a week before kickoff.

Rinse, wash, repeat.

Don't know anything about Nansen, but all our rainmaker recruiters are absolutely on the offensive side of the ball.

To be fair, it's not unique to it being the week before kick off. We've found something to complain about every week since the loss to Washington.

He is. We probably don't even know who Josiah Sharma is without Nansen opening that door for us in Northern California. Also helped us shore up the DT position for this year bringing Norton and Savea with him from Arizona.

He is in the circle of trust with Banks, Choice and Flood.

No, I just don’t get worked up when a recruitment doesn’t go Texas’ way.

That may be your take, but I and others see it as he wants to focus on football and doesn't want to deal with the public side of being a head coach. The fact that he has the self-awareness to understand his strengths and weaknesses likely makes him a better leader.

I was about to say that it doesn't seem like he needs to babysit when we've got it taken care of, freeing him up to do something productive and worthwhile.

"He doesn't want his boss's job, therefore he probably isn't good at the one he has" is an insanely dangerous thought for any leader to entertain.  I'd argue that confusing ambition with talent is a pretty consistent theme with organizations in decline.
