Monday AM Recruiting: Thoughts on targets and commits

The Texas Longhorns have the No. 4 ranked class with the commitment Saturday by 4-star+ defensive lineman Joseph Mbatchou (Loganville, Ga./Grayson).

With the level and number of top targets remaining, Texas is zeroing in on the No. 2 class with a shot to finish No. 1 on December 4.

OnTexasFootball begins Monday with thoughts on the top 5 targets remaining on the board.

Four-star++ ATH Michael Terry III (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights)

Terry III celebrated his 18th birthday last night with family and friends. His birthday cake was half Texas and half Nebraska. So Oregon is officially out lol, but that has been the case. Texas remains the favorite over the Cornhuskers.

The key question with the recruitment is when will Terry III announce his decision. OTF stopped by Alamo Heights High Friday, and the prevailing thought was December 4 right now. Terry and AHHS are looking at a deep playoff run, and Terry doesn't want to make anything about himself.

Five-star OT and Oklahoma commit Michael Fasusi (Lewisville, Texas/High)

Texas definitely helped the cause with the Friday night/Saturday visit, that included Fasusi's father and sister. OTF was told the visit was a step up from the June official visit, and that Texas has put themselves squarely in the mix ahead of this weekends visit to Texas A&M. There is optimism on the 40 Acres with Fasusi following the visit.

OTF is watching to see who makes the visit to Texas A&M with Fasusi this weekend. Oklahoma also remains in the mix, but has the task of being able to convince Fasusi to sign December 4 with the possibility of not having the OC and OL coaching positions settled.

Five-star DL Justus Terry (Manchester, Ga./High)

Let's be clear on one thing, Kirby Smart doesn't want to see Terry sign with Texas. Auburn is one thing, as the Tigers are the neighboring state and have signed many tremendous players out of the Atlanta area and Peach State over the years and will continue to do so. But Texas beginning to have success in Georgia is not what Smart ideally wants to have happen. And this is especially the case with a 5-star defensive line prospect. So that is what Texas is up against.

Texas has continued to have some positive convos and enough momentum that Chris Gilbert attended his playoff game last Friday. That was ahead of an official visit to Auburn. This is a "big boy", gird up your loins level recruitment - to say the least.

Four-star++ Auburn commit Nathaniel Marshall (Oak Park, Il./Fenwick)

Texas is battling with Georgia and Auburn down the stretch for high-end defensive linemen. That is exactly where one wants to be. Texas already beat Auburn for Mbatchou. Now, the Horns are working to flip one of the nations most talented 5-tech/long term 5 & 3 prospects. But this one is from Chicago.

Marshall made the official visit to Texas over the weekend with his mom and brother. The early word coming out of Austin is Texas feels like the visit went very well, and the Horns have a legit shot. I want to be clear, that's not OTF saying this. Texas has to overcome Auburn's relationship with Marshall and family, and the Tigers are extremely aggressive in the 2025 cycle.

Four-star++ Javion Hilson (Cocoa, Fla./High)

Hilson made an OV to Michigan over the weekend, and is scheduled to be at Texas A&M Saturday-Sunday for an OV. Texas vs. Texas A&M is where the decision was expected to come from headed into the Michigan visit.

The big Q for Michigan is if Hilson would actually leave the south for college. To this point, there isn't any sign that he would actually make that leap.

Hilson and Texas have continued to have positive communication. Hilson is big on player development, and there is a feeling in Austin that Texas has done everything they can to illustrate that to him.

Four-star Kellen Wiley (Seffner,Fla./Armwood)

Texas and Florida are battling it out for the 6-3.5, 226-pound linebacker. This process is coming at the Wiley family fast right now, with him being a senior riser. One source very close to the recruitment believed Texas enter the Florida visit over the weekend with a sizable lead over the Gators. Wiley's family absolutely loved the plan Texas has for Wiley's development. Obviously, there is more to the recruitment, but the family thinks very highly of Texas at this point.

The Stampede: Which recruits are in play for Texas with just over a week remaining till early signing day
Horns247 Staff

The Texas Longhorns currently stand with the No. 4 recruiting class in the nation with 24 commitments, but they're not done yet.

More prospects will join the Longhorns' class between now and Dec. 4, with the Longhorns on pace to finish with a top three class for the first time since 2023 when Arch Manning spearheaded Steve Sarkisian's best recruiting haul in his Texas tenure.

At this point in time, a little more than a handful of recruits remain at play for Sarkisian and Co. whether they're uncommitted or their commitments would have to be flipped, and today we're here to bring you the goods.

In this edition of The Stampede, Horns247's weekly gathering of recruiting intel, Hank South and Jordan Scruggs give you the latest on which recruits remain at play for the Texas Longhorns with just over a week from early signing day.

Let's get into it!

Tampa (Fla.) Armwood four-star linebacker Kellen Wiley

Entering the weekend Texas was trending for the Sunshine State linebacker. An official visit to Miami was called off and an unofficial visit to Gainesville was scheduled. Wiley was in attendance for the Gators' big win over Ole Miss, as UF has caught fire in the last few weeks of the season. While Miami was considered the top competition for the Tampa (Fla.) Armwood product early on, it's likely Florida that's now the biggest roadblock to Texas. I still feel the Longhorns are in pole position in this one with the impression they left on both Wiley and his family during their official visit for the Florida game earlier this month.

"Just reminded me of home, I could play early, and it's all around a great place," Wiley told Horns247 of why he could see himself at Texas. "SEC ball, nothing like it."

Wiley has no other visits scheduled before his decision. We'll see if he pops up on any campuses this weekend. He has hinted at a commitment coming on his social media in the last few days. — SOUTH

Manchester (Ga.) five-star defensive lineman Justus Terry

I don't ever want to lead anyone on with reporting only for the presumed outcome to eventually unfold. And with Terry, I will say I think Georgia ends up winning. That's the unanimous thought at least. Auburn and Texas are swinging, though. The Longhorns landed Joseph Mbatchou over the weekend, but even with three interior defensive linemen committed, there's still room for at least one more. Terry continue to get brought up by sources as a guy in the mix for the Longhorns. Plus, we saw Texas staffer Chris Gilbert at his game this past Friday night. Could Terry be signing day shocker? He's certainly worth monitoring. I still like Georgia at this point, though. — SOUTH

Lewisville (Texas) five-star offensive tackle and Oklahoma commit Michael Fasusi

The marquee visitor of the weekend, Fasusi followed through with his visit plans to give Texas a look one more time before signing. He's also expected to be at Texas A&M this weekend, so the Longhorns have a chance to double up on their impression for the talented offensive tackle. Fasusi has maintained he's committed to OU through it all. Brent Venables said last week that if you're taking visits as a commit, you're not committed. That seemed directed at Fasusi. Talking to a couple sources at Texas this weekend, the visit appears to have gone well. The staff is collectively pushing to flip the in-state talent, not just Kyle Flood or Chris Gilbert. There has been a quiet confidence about Texas' position over the last few weeks, especially as OU has struggled. The Sooners made an about face this past weekend by not only upsetting Alabama, but beating the Crimson Tide by 21 points. Will that be enough to show Fasusi the direction the program is going? It remains to be seen. This one will go down to the wire. — SOUTH

Fort Bend (Texas) Hightower four-star cornerback and LSU commit Kade Phillips

Last week Phillips' father told Horns247 they would "probably" visit Austin last weekend for the Kentucky game. Phillips followed up by telling Jordan Scruggs he would be staying home instead. LSU's class got rocked last Thursday when Bryce Underwood flipped to Michigan. It's clear the Tigers' staff has circled the wagons over the last few days to try and right the ship. One source near the LSU program told Horns247 Phillips is not a flip threat to the Longhorns. We'll see if the one-time Texas commit has any change of heart over the next week but it looks like he's sticking with LSU. — SOUTH

San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) JSerra Catholic four-star linebacker Madden Faraimo

Back in the summer it was clear the Longhorns gained ground on Notre Dame for Faraimo. He held off on a decision, and still remain uncommitted today. Faraimo, however, has not returned to Texas and now doesn't have an opportunity to before National Signing Day. With Texas going in on Kellen Wiley, that likely reflects how UT feels about where Faraimo stands. I would project Notre Dame for the West Coast standout. — SOUTH

Conroe Top247 CB Dorian Brew — Oregon commit

The Longhorns remain in play for the dynamic 6-foot, 200 pounder from the Houston area with elite bloodlines, but with how tight he and his camp have kept things throughout the recruitment it continues to be hard to have a clear read on how realistic a flip actually is. Conroe's season ended this past Friday with the Tigers falling 38-22 to Bridgeland, which means Brew will have more free time to think on his recruitment than he's had since the summer. He's part of an elite top-60 trio of defensive backs that have pledged to the Ducks this year, and if he was to flip to the Longhorns, he'd be the fifth defensive back in the class. In the past Texas has pulled off monumental flips from Oregon near signing day with Kelvin Banks Jr. immediately coming to mind, but with this being an entirely different situation with the Ducks head coach set to be in Eugene this next season amongst other factors at play with Brew and Oregon, it would surprise us a bit Brew ends up in the Texas class come early signing day. — SCRUGGS

San Antonio Alamo Heights 5-star ATH Michael Terry III

Texas continues to be the heavy favorite for the nation's No. 1 athlete prospect. At one point things seemed to be trending towards a month of November decision with several sources believing a commitment was on the horizon just a few weeks ago, but Terry has remained uncommitted. In what will likely now be an announcement that's made on Dec. 4 or at least in the month of December, Horns247 continues to feel great about the chances of Terry ending up at Texas. This feels exactly like last year's recruitment of Kobe Black, where the Longhorns were the runaway favorite for the majority of the year but Black waited all the way to December to announce his decision. Terry has a third round playoff game on Friday vs. Corpus Christi Miller and he remains focused on finishing his high school career on a high note. If the Alamo Heights Mules are able to continue their undefeated season through this weekend, there could also be a chance he waits to make his decision till the Navy All-American Bowl in San Antonio in early January. A source in San Antonio mentioned a January announcement at the annual all-star game as a possibility back in the summer, but at that time there wasn't a ton of belief that the recruitment would go that far. But we're now just over a week away from early signing day and Terry still hasn't announced a decision date, so perhaps it does go till January. Terry will be an early enrollee, so if it does go all the way to January, there will be over a month between when he sends in his binding paperwork and when he announces the decision. Regardless of the timing here, Horns247 continues to love the chances of Texas ending up with five-star by the time it's all said and done. — SCRUGGS

Richmond Randle three-star defensive lineman Chace Sims — Texas &M commit

Unless Sims pops up in Austin for a visit between now and Dec. 4, it's hard to feel good about him ending up in the class. The Aggies beat the Longhorns to really prioritizing him back in the summer, and they've been able to hold onto his commitment throughout the season while at the same time getting Sims to cancel every official visit to Texas he's booked. Sims did unofficially visit for the Georgia game on Oct. 19, but Horns247 believes there's more work to be done and that conversations still need to be had, and likely on campus. Sims did tell Horns247 back in September that he would make his final decision on whether to stick with Texas A&M or flip on Dec. 4, so if the Longhorns are able to pull off a flip, that's likely when you'd see it. — SCRUGGS

Texas commits that have visited elsewhere …

For now, it appears the Longhorns have weathered the storm for guys like Myron Charles and Jaime Ffrench. Both showed up to Texas this weekend amidst heavy pursuit from Florida to try and flip the talented in-state prospects. Both are key commits in UT's 2025 class and the Longhorns have kept it pedal to the metal when it comes to their recruitments. Obviously it's not done until pen is put to paper. But Texas appears in good shape to hang on here. We'll see how this weekend's visit to College Station goes for Nick Townsend. He says he's locked in with UT, but the Aggies are being aggressive in their efforts to try and change his mind. We believe Townsend and his family have always preferred Texas. The Longhorns should win out here in the end. — SOUTH

Horns247 is still working to gather more details on the official visit and overall flip chances of Oak Park (Ill.) Fenwick Top247 defensive lineman and Auburn commit Nathaniel Marshall. We will have an update when we gather enough.

So, couple of interesting points re: the Gators.

- Florida's been considered the primary threat re: LB Kellen Wiley and Jaime Ffrench

- the Gators just secured a flip/commitment from a highly rated LB who was previously committed to USC (Ty Jackson - # 124 composite overall), and they don't seem to have offered Kellen Wiley (yet, anyway)

- they've gotten a slew of Crystal Balls for Muizz Tounkara, a big WR currently committed to Arizona

Seem to augur well for Wiley and Ffrench.

VIP intel: Latest on Longhorns TE commit Nick Townsend after Texas visit VIP

Hank South (Horns 247)

Four-star tight end and Texas commit Nick Townsend was back in Austin over the weekend for the Kentucky game. The Spring (Texas) Dekaney product has been committed to the Longhorns since the summer, but of as of late Texas A&M has been turning up the heat on Townsend in an attempt to flip him from Texas' class.

Townsend spoke to Horns247 last week to update where he stood with his pledge.

"Shoot, I'm 100 percent committed," he said.

Now, after returning to the Forty Acres, his mother, Olivia, weighed in on the visit.

"It was awesome!!!!!" Townsend's mother said over text to Horns247. "Nick is ready to sign!"

There's one more hurdle UT may have to jump, though. And that's Townsend's upcoming visit to College Station this weekend. If Texas handles its business, though, that trip could end up being a good thing depending on how you look at it.

"We all will be there to watch the game on the recruiting side! #HookemHorns," Olivia Townsend said.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Townsend is rated the No. 4 tight end and the No. 66 overall player in the country, per 247Sports.

I think it was purely moving the goalposts on an outcome variable by Mack to cover his ass. It gave him some "standard of excellence" while allowing for a loss to OU and someone else on the schedule.

In reality, it just meant Texas missed the BigXII South crown and a title game appearance, and settled for the Holiday/Alamo Bowl, as you mentioned. Real neat, FUPM.

Well back before they went to 12 games seasons 10 wins was a good metric. Just like 9 wins was a good metric in the 90s.

10 wins is "good," but it's all relative. In five of those nine 10-win seasons, Texas didn't play for shit at the end.

When you lose to OU most years or manage to drop a game you shouldn't that puts them in to the Championship game ahead of you when you do manage to beat them, you come up with all sorts of numbers to cover your ass.

Winning all the time isn't good for the kids.

In a 12 team playoff, we would have been in almost every one of those years.... and then probably would have been pantsed by a team with a real coach.

With the teams we had, we should have double or more than that. We by far had the best rosters, and yet Mack constantly got butt fucked by Stoops almost yearly, and add in K-State, Tech,or some other team we had superior talent to. Mack sucked as a HC, but he was a good smiley glad hand. There's a reason he was called coach February, and they weren't wrong. Very few times did we lose just 1 game. In fact, he has 3, and 1 undefeated season (remember, he was here for 15 years). Other than that, he has 2+ losses per season. We were constant holiday bowl attendees. But we did have great ST's for almost his entire tenure.

Stoops won the conference 7 times, and Mack just 2 times. How sad is that? Stoops is 8-5 over Mack, and then went on to wreck other teams on his way to yet another CC.

With all those NFL players we churned out during his tenure, it's pathetic he only had 2 CC's in his 15 seasons. John Mackovic has 1, Sark has the other 1.
