Fun.

You don't think someone can buy fun for 225 billion dollars unless it's an NFL team??

Also, if you're worth 225 billion dollars, how is owning an NFL team a hassle if you hire people to run it for you?

From the short note below re: the mystery flip:

Sounds like Chace Sims?

I edited my post while you were responding- if you note I was talking about Billionaires in general when I said 10 figure net worth (or 11 or 12) so for some people it would be affordability (1B is enough to drop gobs of money on being defacto owner of a college team but not enough to buy an NFL team), as well as it being a major bitch to actually buy an NFL team, when it comes up for sale, and then get approved by the other owners.

As far as the hassle of owning an NFL team you become the public face of a city's aspirations and hopes and dreams, and you can't buy your way into a title because it's a salary cap league.  Maybe he doesn't want the notoriety. Maybe he doesn't want to be motherfucked by everyone in town when his team goes 5-12. Maybe a bunch of different reasons. The fact of the matter is though- he doesn't own an NFL team and he is playing sugar daddy to  an NCAA team so I'm sure he has his reasons for that- even if they might not be obvious to either of us.  Maybe he's like Saban and he's more interested in playing a rigged game? I have no idea. But it's something I've speculated off line would happen for a couple years now- Billionaires that can't get into the professional sports ownership world becoming "defacto" owners of collegiate programs.

Lets be clear here, Larry Ellison is worth 225 billion dollars, and he knows exactly how to have fun, and the reason for that should be and is completely obvious to all of us:

Fun fact: I dated a chick briefly a few years ago that got her PhD at MIchigan. She only came to the US for grad school, knew nothing about football prior, but was a die hard Michigan football fan. Knew their roster inside out and a lot about football in general.

Cool. I responded to someone talking generally about billionaires and you made it specific. That woman is hot but I’m sure he has had hotter or could have had hotter if he wanted.  Him being sugar daddy to her, Michigan or anything else he does is personalized version of fun for him. I’m sure he has his reasons.
my general point is this- being involved in NIL at a high level is a toy for someone with a huge net worth.  It has obvious fun benefits for the right person. It’s not a surprise that this is a toy lots of people want to associate with if they have the money, and the cost of that toy is less than ownership of a pro franchise with less work associated with it.
I’m just grateful we have people willing to do the heavy lifting on one side, and that y’all helped set up a conduit for crowd funding to do work on another level.

I choose to believe the conversation went something like this:

Ellison: What do you want for Christmas? Bugatti? Gucci Lawn? Hope Diamond?

Wife: No thanks, I'll take the #1 qb, a top EDGE, and a left tackle

Ellison: Hail to the victors

34 minutes ago, Wulaw Horn said:

I've been saying this for 5 years that it would and could and should happen. It's insanely hard and expensive to buy a professional sports team.  If you wanted to drop 20M a year you would basically be the sugar daddy of all sugar daddies as it relates to athletics at a university. Like- total and complete access- coach doesn't take a shit without letting you know about it first blah blah blah.  You could get like 95% of the perks of owning a sports team with like 50% of the hassle at like 1/100ths of the cost.  It's a logical decision for a guy whose net worth is 10 figures that's a big sports fan, and it's a no brainer for someone with an 11 or 12 figure net worth.

I mean there is one pretty big difference...you actually OWN an NFL team and the heavy profits and value appreciation that come with it. It's a legit financial investment on top of the perks.

In CFB you get what...access and the chance to cheer along like any Joe Schmo? You aren't recovering a dime of what you spend.

So I'd actually disagree. If I were a hundred-billionaire I'd have much more interest in an NFL team

NFL makes big profits. Baseball and basketball operates at break even if you believe the ownership. Either way you aren’t even talking about operating revenue that a 100B guy would notice in those two sports.
or, put another way- people are doing it and the group of people that are doing it grows larger every day. So, it obviously makes sense to the right person.
if I was worth 1B I would go take over the AD at Sam or something and crowd source Surly to run the entire program for shits and giggles. Or, give Sark 10M, get Terry fired, drop 5M there and spread another 5M around the non revenue sports just for my own amusement. I would guess I wouldn’t be the only one here that would find this to be the best use of 2% of their net worth any particular year.

Remember back when NIL was not to be used as an inducement or be tied to attending a specific school.

It’s only the most topical big picture issue in 2024 recruiting- sources and amounts of money in NIL and what that looks like.
this might not be the thread for it. I’m out.

That's not what y'all are discussing.

It's not the most topical issue. Where goes are going and who Texas might be losing or flipping are far more topical right now.

Finally, we've discussed the bomber types swooping in and changing everything for years. Knight has been a central discussion item across multiple recruiting cycles. Ellison doesn't change anything and it's to be expected. Texas still has the machine it needs for most situations and those guys aren't taking everyone. The Yellawood guy is no different at Auburn. If Texas ultimately successfully woos Dell or Musk into participating, we're good on that front as well. Nothing new here besides y'all getting silly about your comparisons and disagreements regarding ownership requirements, etc.

Steering this somewhat back on track, I will say this: I'm glad it is Michigan getting the Ellison wave and not someone that is more directly competitive with Texas. Can't say I give a shit about Michigan either way and all that talent has to go somewhere, rather it be them than a conference opponent or in-state school. Also it's fun to see them abuse tOSU lol
