I think a stacked QB room with Arch Manning and true freshman showing out makes him think about where else he could go w/out as much competition. Especially with as much as he's visited Auburn.

Or he might think that if Arch took a redshirt year to better understand the offense, build his strength,

and get used to the jump up in competition, that might be the answer to getting better prepared for the draft one day. Arch will be our starting QB for probably 2 years so that might be the winning formula for him as well.

Surely some of y'all remember Eugene Seale. He was a "scab" for the Oilers during the NFL strike and hung around when the so-called professionals returned and was an All Pro special teams player. Before that he got a scholarship offer when Bill Yeoman was at UH but it got pulled and he went to Lamar. Coincidentally UH had scheduled Lamar for a couple of non conference games and Eugene set a record with 40+ solo tackles in those two games. So suck it Bill Yeoman's ghost and fuck Cougar High as always

Offensively, about to go on a 5+ yr run… Ewers+Manning+Owens or better…. if we find a back 4/5 savant on defense… could be Saban’esque

I've talked myself into believing that Arch will undoubtedly win us a NC or 2 before he leaves. He's truly generational.

I give no fucks. It's happening.

The Stampede: Projecting Texas' 2025 recruiting haul ahead of the May evaluation period

Quote

With the Longhorns wrapping up spring football over the weekend, Texas is set to hit the May evaluation period in the next few weeks.

While work with the team might've slowed down now that spring has concluded, recruiting is just getting started ahead of what Horns247 anticipates being an incredibly busy months of July and August.

That said, now that all the spring visit events such as Junior Days, Longhorns City Limits, spring games, etc. on the Forty Acres have come and gone, we figured what better time to give an updated class prediction for the Longhorns in 2025.

It's important to remember that we're still in the month of April and in today's age of College Football with NIL and the NCAA Transfer Portal, truly anything can happen between now and Early Signing Day.

That said, it's still too early in the cycle for us to feel particularly amazing about every prospect on this list which brings up a great reminder that this series is more for fun than anything else at this point in time.

For those curious, Hank was in charge of offense and Jordan was in charge of defense.

Without further ado, let's get into it.

QUARTERBACK

KJ Lacey (Photo: Jason Caldwell, 247Sports)
KJ Lacey, 4-star, Saraland (Ala.) — Texas commit

Earlier in the spring the plan for Texas was to likely take two quarterbacks in the class of 2025 to get the numbers right at the position looking ahead to the post Quinn Ewers era. While that certainly could still be the case, the Longhorns have yet to fully pursue of second signal caller to pair up with Lacey. Texas likes Duncanville product and SMU commit Keelon Russell, and hosted the talented Top100 signal caller this weekend, but didn't offer. That doesn't meant Texas won't, though. For now we'll just project Lacey in the class. He has said he would welcome the competition of a two-quarterback room, too. — SOUTH

RUNNING BACK
Rickey Stewart
Rickey Stewart (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
Rickey Stewart, 4-star, Tyler Chapel Hill — Texas commit

James Simon, 4-star, Shreveport (La.) Calvary Baptist Academy

Running backs coach Tashard Choice got things going earlier this month landing Stewart, the program's top running back target in the state of Texas. The Longhorns offered the former SMU pledge at Junior Day while he was still committed to the Mustangs. After he backed off that pledge it was only a matter of time before he joined Texas' 2025 class. As for Simon, the Longhorns are trending up here. We wrote in the Quick Hitters on Saturday following his visit for the Orange-White Game to keep an eye on UT. The 247Sports Crystal Ball favors LSU, but the Tigers already have two running backs committed. Simon only has one official visit scheduled for the summer so far to Texas on June 21-23 and may make a decision before then. We've liked the chances for Mater Dei product Jordon Davison in the past. While he's still very much a candidate, Ohio State is trending up for the West Coast back with their recent addition of Carlos Locklyn as RB coach. — SOUTH

WIDE RECEIVER

Dakorien Moore (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
Dakorien Moore, 5-star, Duncanville — LSU commit

Jaime Ffrench, 5-star, Jacksonville (Fla) Mandarin

Kaliq Lockett, 5-star, Sachse

Kelshaun Johnson, 4-star, Hitchcock

Perhaps our most ambitious projection, and one that would compete with any wide receivers class ever, at least on paper, Moore is projected by most to ultimately flip to Texas despite his current status as an LSU commit. Obviously the Tigers aren't a slouch program and are doing everything in their power to keep the nation's top-ranked wideout, but Texas stayed heavily in contention here and made it known he's their No. 1 target at the position. Oregon is keeping its foot on the gas as well. He'll officially visit the Longhorns, Ducks, Ohio State, and his current Bayou Bengals in the summer before making a final decision prior to his senior season. As for Ffrench, we went back and forth on this one and whether to include him. If there's a pecking order of wide receiver targets for Texas it's Moore at 1A and Ffrench at 1B. The Longhorns surged up his list after a weekend spent in Austin earlier this month where he placed Texas in his top three with Ohio State and Tennessee. While the Buckeyes remain the popular pick for most, Texas is making it interesting. He'll return for an official visit June 21-23. As for Lockett, another five-star receiver in our projection, there is mutual heavy interest between both parties. He's got plenty of suitors, but talking to sources it feels like Texas is setting the pace for the in-state product that would be the biggest Sachse talent to come to Austin since Devin Duvernay. And last but not least, someone we've already projected to Texas on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, Johnson will likely decide between Texas and USC this summer. We like the Longhorns for the electric athlete that's visited several times this year already. — SOUTH

TIGHT END

Nick Townsend (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
Emaree Winston, 4-star, Calhoun (Ga.) — Texas commit

Nick Townsend, 4-star, Spring Dekaney

Winston, a longtime pledge, capped off a four-day trip to Austin on Sunday, one that cemented his feeling for the Longhorns. He only has one official visit scheduled for Texas this summer. UCF remains in regular contact, as do Texas A&M and Alabama. Winston says he's really only focused on Texas and helping grow the class, particularly at tight end. We wouldn't be shocked to see him still take visits, but he's happy with Texas. As for the other spot, we went back and forth on who to include. While Texas currently doesn't have the inside track for Townsend in our opinion, battling the likes to Texas A&M and Alabama, we feel eventually come official visit season the Longhorns can close this one out. The other candidates are Kiotti Armstrong and Kaleb Edwards, who we certainly could have included on this projection, but we opted for Townsend this time around. All three will be back in Austin in June. Perhaps our projection changes then. — SOUTH

OFFENSIVE LINE

Michael Fasusi (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
Michael Fasusi, 5-star OT, Lewisville

Lamont Rogers, 4-star OT, Mesquite Horn

John Mills, 3-star OT, San Francisco (Calif.) St. Igantius College Prep

Jordan Coleman, OL, Cedar Hill

Devin Coleman, OL, Cedar Hill

Fasusi has been a mainstay on our projections and that remains the case with this one. He recently visited Austin on April 9 and will return for an official visit this summer. Obviously he's got who's who list of offers, but we feel Kyle Flood and the Longhorns have positioned themselves best. As for Rogers, he's one that had you asked us three months ago where he'd end up, we'd probably say Texas A&M, or at least not Texas. That's changed now. UT is picking things up, and greatly impressed Rogers and his mom on an April 6 trip to Austin for the Longhorn City Limits. Factor in the addition of Chris Gilbert back to the staff and UT is trending up for the elite lineman. Mills has a top six, but we believe it'll come down to Texas and Washington. We feel UT has the inside track despite his family ties to the Huskies program. He, too, was on campus April 6 and will return for an official visit in June. He said his visit to Austin earlier this month was his best visit yet. The Coleman brothers love Texas and Texas loves the Coleman brothers. When the Longhorns offered Devin earlier this year (to go with Jordan) we believed that sealed the deal in both ultimately ending up at Texas. — SOUTH

DEFENSIVE LINE

Lance Jackson (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
Lance Jackson, 4-star, Texarkana (Texas) Pleasant Grove

Brandon Brown, 4-star, Melbourne (FL) Eau Gallie — Texas commit

Zion Williams, 4-star, Lufkin

Josiah Sharma, 4-star, Folsom (CA)

The Longhorns won big early on by landing a commitment from Jackson following the junior day. The 6-foot-5, 245 pounder has seen a rise in his ranking this offseason, and there's still a potential path to improvement for the native East Texan that possesses the frame, athleticism, and versatility to play either EDGE or D-Line at Texas. Brown's commitment on the other hand almost came out of nowhere with the pledge originally being to Bo Davis. That said, the almost spur of the moment commitment hasn't made life easy on Texas trying to keep a flag planted in Florida, but the Longhorns have been successful in holding off flip candidates so far. Just about everyone you talk to feels as if Williams will end up at Texas or LSU. Bo Davis leaving for the Bayou certainly didn't help the Longhorns, but Williams would likely have Texas as a finalist regardless of who's coaching due to Williams being so fond of the university and the people in and around Austin. That said, Kenny Baker will still have a challenge on his hand as he looks to fend off the man he was hired to replace. Sharma, a former Washington commit, will be incredibly hard to keep away from a reunion with Kalen Deboer, but we think the Longhorns can do it. He'll officially visit June 7-9 and the Longhorns have turned up the heat in recent weeks with the burnt orange pushing hard for one of their top DL targets. Official visits will likely determine Sharma's landing place. — Scruggs

EDGE

Kamauryn Morgan (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
Kamauryn Morgan, 4-star, Dallas South Oak Cliff

Smith Orogbo, 4-star, Alief Hastings

The Longhorns would likely finish in second behind Texas A&M if the recruitment was to end right now, but signing day is in December and Morgan intends to take his recruitment into the fall. With only one official visit currently set for Arizona State, Morgan is still in the process of scheduling more officials and he'll see Texas, Texas A&M, and SMU for sure with Oregon and USC potentially landing trips as well. Regardless of what the official visit schedule reflects, one source believes the decision will come down to the Aggies or the Longhorns. The Aggies have really come on strong in Morgan's recruitment this spring and again if the recruitment was to end today it'd likely be for Texas A&M, but we believe Texas will get it turned around and that the Longhorns will end up with two signees from Dallas ISD when it's all said and done. Morgan is also special because like Lance Jackson, he has the athleticism, frame, body type, etc. to project to either EDGE or D-Line at the next level. Orogbo is one of the quieter targets on the board, but that's not to diminish the No. 161 overall prospect in the Top247. With SMU, Texas, Oklahoma, and USC battling for the Houston native the recruitment seems to be tracking to the two finalists of the Trojans and Longhorns with Horns247 believing the Longhorns will get it done. With a limited number of EDGE targets in 2025, the margin for error is relatively small and with staff being super high on the 6-foot-4, 220 pounder we see Texas surging for Orogbo in the summer. — Scruggs

LINEBACKER

Riley Pettijohn (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)
Elijah "Bo" Barnes, 4-star, Dallas Skyline

Riley Pettijohn, 4-star, McKinney

Jonathan Cunningham, 3-star, North Crowley

Barnes and Pettijohn have been two of the biggest targets in 2025 regardless of position going back to the start of cycle, and with the Longhorns landing a commitment from Barnes earlier than most originally anticipated, all focus has now been turned to the two other DFW linebackers in Pettijohn and Cunningham. USC and Texas A&M shape the main competition for the Longhorns with Pettijohn, but Horns247 sees a world where Texas gets this done ahead of official visit season. Cunningham on the other hand is effectively the top target for TCU and SMU at the position but since the Longhorns have come along in the last few weeks it's been a heavy burnt orange vibe around the recruitment and Horns247 believes Cunningham has the highest chances out of any 'backer not named Barnes or Pettijohn to end up in the class. — Scruggs

DEFENSIVE BACK
Jonah Williams
Jonah Williams (Photo: Collin Kennedy, 247Sports)
Jonah Williams, 5-star, Galveston Ball

Dorian Brew, 5-star, Conroe

Kade Phillips, 4-star, Fort Bend Hightower

Aidan Anding, 3-star, Ruston (LA)

Likely the second most ambitious projection behind the receiver group, defensive back is a really challenging position group to project currently. We feel really good about the chances of Phillips and Anding ending up in the Longhorns' class, whereas Williams and Brew were spots we filled with less confidence. Texas was the offer Phillips and his family were waiting out the longest for, and once the Longhorns offered they were an immediate threat. With Texas pursuing Phillips to play safety, we like the chances of Phillips choosing the Longhorns over LSU and Texas A&M. Anding on the other hand is down to the three finalists of Arkansas, Miami, and Texas and with Terry Joseph's deep ties to Louisiana, we like the Longhorns chances of winning out for the Pelican state product. Williams is the top safety target on the board, and with an extremely weak group of safeties in 2025 following a year where the Longhorns only signed one true safety in Xavier Filsaime in 2024, we see Blake Gideon and Texas going all-in to land the dynamic multisport athlete from the 409. Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and just about every other blue blood program will make this extremely hard for Texas to pull off, but the Sark staff has shown they're able to win these type of recruitments before, now we'll see if they can do it again. Brew is a very similar story to that of Williams in that in a weak class of defensive backs, his priority as the No. 1 target at cornerback is amplified. In all honesty, where Texas is in Brew's recruitment feels similar to where Texas was around this time last year for Ryan Wingo. That said, Texas will have to hold off USC, LSU, and Ohio State but ultimately we see the Longhorns getting aggressive and winning out for the 6-foot-2, 185 pounder with Olympic bloodlines. — Scruggs

Kohl's #1 K, #2 P nationally

Quote

Starzyk recently competed at the 2024 Underclassman Challenge and is the best combo k/p in the country. He finished with 110.83 points in punting, 114.08 points on kick offs, and 21 points on field goals. Starzyk also showed very well during the competitions. He is a D1 scholarship player. At Kohl's National Scholarship Camp in July of 2023 he showed great improvement in punting and kicking. His punt score of 108.74 points, kick-off score of 109.82 points, and field goal score of 31 were all at the Power Five level. We are so excited for Starzyk's future! At the March Ranking Event, he graded out in the top 10 as both a kicker and punter. His kick-offs and punt distances were different compared to the other campers on the windy day. He was able to kick multiple 80 yard kick-offs. Starzyk is a very talented combo kicker/punter. At the Texas Showcase in May of 2022 he had a perfect charting of field goals at the event with 11 points made out of 11 and hit multiple 69+ yard kickoffs with over 3.8 seconds of hang time. His punting was also at the elite level with a 50-yard, 4.78 second hang time hit during the charting portion of camp. Starzyk is one of the most talented specialists in the 2025 class and we expect big things from him in the upcoming year because he has the talent required to be a dominant combo specialist. Starzyk impressed the coaches with his power and consistency during the 2021 Kohl’s Texas Winter Showcase. He scored 9 points during the field goal charting, hit a big ball on kickoffs of 66 yards with a 3.61 second hang time and had several punts over 40+ yards.

We'll be in a very interesting position for 2026 if Arch plays well and leaves after '25. The options would be inexperienced RS-SO Owens, RS-FR Lacey, and a true freshman. Wouldn't surprise me to see us go out and get a 1-year portal rental for that year unless Owens or Lacey are well ahead of schedule. A program like Texas will be expected to reload every year in the NIL/portal era. Sark isn't going to waste a year with an underdeveloped QB throwing to the likes of Ryan Wingo and (fingers crossed) Dakorien Moore.

I don't think Owens will or should worry Lacey. That's about as clear a path as he'll get at any major program.

Ehhh. The Mannings have been extremely patient with Arch, and I expect that will continue with his NFL decision. It’s far from a given Arch leaves after one year of starting, and Lacey seems to be aware of that.

You are correct.

What’s the deal with the Coleman brothers? It sounds like we lead for both but neither are ranked. One is a tackle and one is a guard? Is one better than the other? If you put one of their hands in cold water would the other twin feel it?

Maybe I have listened to Bobby Burton & Gerry repeat it about 30 times, but the Manning family, and statistics, show that a QB with 25 or more starts is much more likely to experience success in the NFL than a QB with fewer starts than that.

It is a big reason that Quinn is returning for a third year and unless Arch starts 12+ games this year, there is virtually zero chance that Arch goes pro after next year (2025), no matter how great his season is.

The Mannings are focused on that 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 4th NFL contract. Leaving after one starting season is not part of any plan.

Gotta disagree with you on Ewers he came back because of the consistency or lack thereof last season. Also, the qb draft class next year much weaker.

Or maybe lead the life you want. If you're already a millionaire, you've got choices like that.

The thing to remember about how Gerry and Bobby look at this stuff is that they both lean on a lot of history and patterns therein. That plus putting in a ton of work and being really well-connected makes them right a whole fucking lot compared to everyone else.

However, in this instance, I don't find a lot of value in what prior generations of a family opted to do. It's a different era for all of us, the Mannings included. I view the possibility of Manning transferring before this window closes as a higher percentage chance than the guy staying to play a second year if he lights up the first season. I don't view either outcome as a double digit percentage possibility, nonetheless.

VY wished that he had. He only left early because he thought his hometown team was going to draft him.

They did.

A lot of players never make it to their second contract. Focus on the first one.

JFC, man. This does not apply to QBs at all. Good QBs regularly play into the late thirties these days, so rushing to the second contract doesn’t matter.

If anything, it’s the opposite for QBs. They get rushed into playing in the NFL, so having an extra year of playing and developing in college helps them be ready to succeed and maximize their earnings.
