Terry is probably the most critical recruit in the class if we are serious about locking up that Alamo Heights pipeline.

Spring Dekaney four-star WR Tanook Hines talks Longhorns after surprise official visit

Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247)

Spring Dekaney four-star WR Tanook Hines made headlines on Friday evening when the speedy Houston area native was videoed officially visiting Texas on Ryan Niblett's Instagram story.

One of the fastest prospects in the nation, Hines' track profile is a big reason for his ascension in the recruiting world as he owns a 10.45 PR in the 100M and a 20.71 PR in the 200M which earned him a silver medal in the 6A State Track and Field meet this spring.

He's been just as solid on the gridiron as well, as he had a stellar sophomore season with 50 receptions for 815 yards and 7 touchdowns before turning in 35 receptions for 528 yards and 5 touchdowns as a junior during an injury-shortened campaign.

At the very beginning of the month, Hines was originally scheduled to be in Waco officially visiting Baylor July 7-9, but he ended up pushing those dates to June 21-23. The four-star pushed those Baylor dates back to the 21-23 weekend in order to fit Arkansas into his schedule for the June 7-9 weekend. Then as we got about a week into the month of June, Hines ended up removing Arkansas from his schedule completely in order to officially trip to Texas on the 7-9 weekend.

Although Hines told Horns247 he would be taking an official visit to Texas when I stopped by Dekaney for a spring ball practice in May, the trip didn't come about till Thursday evening and wasn't fully locked in until early Friday morning.

"At first my schedule was already busy, and then I started thinking one of these schools they're probably going to fall off so I started texting Texas. So that's when coach Jackson started hitting me up like 'you trying to come out here?' and I said yes sir and we made it happen."

Speaking of Chris Jackson, Hines mentioned getting to spend time with the Longhorns receivers coach as the highlight of his trip, along with getting to spend time around another familiar face.

"When coach Jackson was breaking down where he would use me and where I would succeed at in their offense," Hines said. "And having fun with my host Ryan Niblett."

When breaking down how the Longhorns would use Hines, the four-star receiver was told he'd be utilized in a similar fashion to that of one of Texas' best in recent memory.

"He was comparing me to Xavier Worthy because of my speed."

Niblett and Hines go back a long ways as the two Houston area natives both ended up practicing and playing together in the same 7on7 program after originally meeting at a track meet.

"With Ryan, we're like family. He's good people. Met him at a track meet, ever since then we've just been tight."

Hines also enjoyed spending time meeting with Steve Sarkisian.

"When we had our talk it was a great talk, he was telling me all of the great things Texas could offer for me and help me in the long run and I really mess with it."

Outside of Jackson and Sarkisian, Hines didn't spend any time formally meeting with any other coaches on the staff. He spent a bit of time with analyst Dalton Williams, the brother of former Texas offensive lineman Connor Williams, but outside of that that was it.

Hines is going to play full-time on both sides of the ball this fall as Dekaney will call upon him to play safety as well as his main position, receiver. Hines got practice time at safety throughout spring ball practices, many of which college coaches were present for which sparked the conversation of Hines potentially becoming a safety prospect or an athlete prospect, rather than a receiver prospect.

However, while Hines playing on the defensive side of the ball wasn't formally discussed during his official visit, the Longhorns made it clear with him that they'd keep recruiting him if he was to become more of an athlete prospect.

"They want me at receiver but said if I end up turning into an athlete, they'll still want me."

At this point in time, Texas is the only program amongst the schools in contention that've told Hines they'd like him at a position that isn't just strictly receiver. A few schools made it by Dekaney this spring with the intention of recruiting Hines to be a safety at the next level, but those schools aren't necessarily in contention.

"There's other schools that came to my practice this spring and saw me at safety and some schools tried to recruit me just for it."

Up next for Hines will be a trip to South Bend the 14-16 weekend before wrapping up his official visit circuit in Waco the 21-23 weekend.

With plans to release a top five following the conclusion of his last official visit to Baylor, Hines doesn't have an exact date in mind for a commitment but will be shutting it down next month.

"I'm going to shut it down in July. I don't know the date yet but it's going to be in July."

As far as where the Longhorns stand in his recruitment coming out of the official visit—

"I'm going to let people know in July, I'm not going to say anything else."

At 6-foot-1, 185 pounds Hines is ranked as the No. 34 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 42 overall prospect in the Lone Star State according to 247Sports

We gotta hold off ND for that kid. They've been recruiting him for a long time. Would be a nice pick up, especially if Kelshaun Johnson goes to aggy.

Watching Javion Hilson's interview at the Austin airport, it's apparent that Texas came in and threw its big swinging dick on the table.

That makes me feel good. I mean, sure the Lambos are cool and all, but it's good to see that Texas NIL is not all smoke and mirrors.

Even if Texas doesn't get Hilson, other schools have every reason to be scared. Texas isn't fucking around.

Prediction: Texas gets at least five five-star players, maybe even six with an outside chance at seven.

Do this.

Besides Jonah Williams, who might not be a Safety, are we in on any Safeties? Looking at these visitor lists, I don't see any. I know we're in on Brew (who's projected CB or Nickel?), but generally DB recruiting seems just really strange. Tanook? Would be interesting to see if we keep poaching 5* safeties late in the cycle (like Filsaime).

One that comes go mind is Kade Phillips, who will be a safety in college. Also, we aren't in on Jonah Williams, even if he is visiting. He's either aggy or ou.

A post-official visit update on the seven visitors on campus at Texas this weekend and where things are moving for each recruitment.

***

WR Tanook Hines – Dekaney (Texas) High
Battle: Texas & Notre Dame
Trending: Texas over ND

Hines was a late addition to the official visit weekend in Austin and snuck in for the weekend. Texas has been pursuing the elite speedster for a while, with visits dating back to July of 2023 and the Junior Day in January. The message to Hines remains on the offensive side of the ball as Hines' 10.45 speed is certainly enticing to the staff. Should the Longhorns take a commitment from Hines, I have a hard time not seeing him in the class. Hines was hosted by Ryan Niblett on the trip.

TE Kaleb Edwards – El Dorado Hills (Calif.) Oak Ridge
Battle: Alabama, Auburn, Oregon, Texas
Trending: TBD

Texas is heading out west for the talented four-star tight end out of El Dorado Hills. Edwards took his official visit to Austin and immediately departed to Auburn Sunday evening. With Texas set to host three additional tight ends in the class for OV's it remains to be seen where either sit for each other at the moment. Jordan Washington and Spencer Shannon were the hosts for Edwards on the trip this weekend.

DL Myron Charles – Port Charlotte (Fla.) High
Battle: Texas and Florida State
Trending: Strong first OV, ball in FSU's court

The first of two Texas and FSU battles in this cycle is brought to us by Myron Charles who departed Sunday afternoon from Austin. The Seminoles will get the final visit this month which could certainly play a factor as the month of July quiets things down a good bit. Texas has been poking around in SEC territory this cycle for defensive linemen and Charles is a big time prospect they are hoping to lure to the Lone Star State.

DL Josiah Sharma – Folsom (Calif.) High
Battle: Texas and Alabama
Trending: Battle brewing

Sharma escaped Austin without talking to media, however the early returns are positive on the front of the Longhorns here. Sharma visited for the first time in the spring with his high school coach and the trip was enough to earn the Longhorns an official visit. The relationship with Kalen DeBoer and his staff needs to be mentioned as Sharma was previously committed to Washington prior to his move to the SEC.

EDGE Javion Hilson – Cocoa (Fla.) High
Battle: Texas and Florida State
Trending: Texas made a big jump in this recruitment

The Longhorns vaulted into the top two for Hilson who made it known right away the visit exceeded that of his Florida official visit to kick off the month. The city, university and status of the program were all key takeaways for Hilson and his mother – who mentioned to our Gerry Hamilton she prefers the Longhorns. The Florida State pledge will take his official visit to Tallahassee on June 21.

CB Caleb Chester – Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Marshall
Battle: Arkansas, Texas, Texas A&M
Trending: Texas out front

I have a hard time envisioning a program better positioned for Chester than Texas at the moment. Texas has been pushing for quite some time and the visit continues that momentum. I do not see Chester going too far from home and with Texas A&M stacked up at corner in the 2025 class (four commits already), Texas is the most likely destination.

ATH Michael Terry III – San Antonio (Texas) Alamo Heights
Battle: Nebraska, Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M
Trending: Texas helped themselves big this weekend

Steve Sarkisian's involvement in this recruitment has been a game changer for Michael Terry in the past week or two. There was a lengthy conversation about where the Longhorns envision him at the next level which was received well by Terry. A source has indicated to me that Texas is the place Terry would prefer to be at, however Nebraska has a strong relationship at the moment and there remains some important conversations yet to be had with Terry which will go a long way in this recruitment.

Seven would be pretty impressive, considering that we're only recruiting six composite 5-star players at the moment (3 WRs, Fasusi, Brew, and Terry).

The Stampede: Loaded Texas recruiting intel following a momentous weekend on the Forty Acres

Quote

Texas is coming off an important official visitors weekend to kickoff the month of June. And if you thought this slate of seven visitors made for a large turnout, buckle up for the next two, with Texas expecting over three dozen more top targets and commits on the Forty Acres.

Before we get to that, however, Horns247's Hank South and Jordan Scruggs break down all of this weekend's official visitors news and look ahead to this weekend's list and the latest buzz around those recruitments.

Take a look!

Texas in front for nation's No. 1 athlete Michael Terry III?

I spoke with a source in San Antonio on Sunday evening who doesn't think the San Antonio Alamo Heights five-star athlete Michael Terry III's official visit to Texas could have gone better. The Longhorns staff answered all the questions and checked off all the boxes, and the word "genuine" was often brought up often when speaking to the source about what Texas did so well over the weekend. The source sees the decision coming down to the Longhorns and Oregon, and while Terry's official visit to Eugene still isn't fully locked in yet, it's very likely it happens the June 21-23 weekend. Terry is set to see the Aggies in College Station this upcoming weekend, but it was clear when speaking to the source that Texas and Oregon are the schools currently at the front of this recruitment. I think Texas made a really smart move by making AJ Milwee the primary point of contact for Terry, and Tashard Choice's long-standing relationship with Terry is a big boost as well, as Choice was who extended Terry his first offer from Georgia Tech way back in July of 2021. Texas still doesn't have a clear cut positional projection for Terry and that's just fine, as the Longhorns did a good job of showing a mix of different Texas players' success on the field while explaining to Terry how he'd be used in similar ways. Again, the Longhorns don't have a concrete positional plan, but have told Terry they'd utilize his skillset similarly to how it's used by his high school — all over the field. That plan resonated well with Terry, as everything I've been told has me believing Texas is the leader in this recruitment as things currently stand. I'm not quite ready to fire in a crystal ball prediction quite yet, but when the time comes, something really big will have to happen for the prediction to not be in favor of the Texas Longhorns landing the nation's No. 1-ranked athlete prospect. Terry told me on the record a summer decision is what he intends to make, but the source I spoke with thinks there's a small chance that Terry could delay his process to the winter with the intention of committing on NBC at the All-American Bowl in his home city in January. Regardless of when the decision is made, Horns247 likes the chances of the announcement being for Texas as things currently stand. (Scruggs)

TANOOK HINES WINDS UP IN AUSTIN THIS WEEKEND. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR TEXAS?

Four-star WR Tanook Hines added Texas to his OV schedule late last week. (Photo: Texas Athletics)

I know I keep writing it but, man, Spring Dekaney four-star wide receiver Tanook Hines is such an interesting recruitment to track. The Longhorns definitely boosted their chances over the weekend, but with Texas' main receiver targets planning on August decisions and Hines wanting to announce his decision in July, I'm not entirely sure what to expect. A source in Houston I've been in touch with throughout the spring and into the summer has been consistent with telling me USC and Notre Dame are the two programs at the front of Hines' recruitment, and while Texas definitely gained ground over the weekend, I still think they're likely behind both the Trojans and the Irish. Notre Dame offers the fastest path to playing time and the Irish and Trojans both have been far more consistent throughout Hines' process than Texas has. Hines has two trips coming up to South Bend (June 14-16) and Waco (June 21-23) where he'll see Baylor, but I think the Bears are a non-threat where the Notre Dame visit looms extremely large. Hines has already been to South Bend before and could see himself going there as he's genuinely comfortable there, so if Notre Dame crushes his visit I'd expect him to end up with the Irish. We will still continue to track Hines' recruitment leading up to the announcement, as it's our belief that if Texas was to push harder and prioritize him more, then more damage in the recruitment could be done. But until that happens, we're going to continue viewing Notre Dame and USC as the two most likely landing spots. Texas would usually have a large proximity advantage over those two, but Hines' older brother plays receiver at the University of Hawaii so travel and distance aren't nearly as big a factor for Hines' family as it usually is for other in-state prospects. (Scruggs)

IN-STATE DB CALEB CHESTER CONTINUES TO TREND TOWARDS LONGHORNS
I didn't end up getting on the phone with Fort Bend Marshall three-star cornerback Caleb Chester yesterday, but we exchanged a few messages and are supposed to be talking today. With a top five of Arkansas, LSU, TCU, Texas, and Texas A&M, this recruitment has long had Texas and Texas A&M as the main programs at the front of the race. LSU held buzz for a moment as a dark horse, but Chester never made it to Baton Rouge for his May 31-June 2 official visit that was at one point on the schedule. That said, Horns247 was strong in the belief that Chester entered the weekend with Texas as his leader. Coming out of the visit weekend we only feel stronger, and at this point would be pretty surprised if Chester doesn't eventually end up in the Longhorns' 2025 class. With a summer decision in mind, Horns247 sees it likely that Chester will announce a decision before the month is over. (Scruggs)

RACE TIGHTENING FOR ELITE FLORIDA STATE EDGE COMMIT JAVION HILSON

Texas is trying to flip the nation's No. 1 edge rusher in Javion Hilson from Florida State. (Photo: Hank South, 247Sports)
Texas played host to the nation's No. 1-ranked edge rusher in Florida State commit Javion Hilson this weekend. The Cocoa (Fla.) product was joined by his mother and sister for his 48-hour stay. Entering the weekend, Florida was seen as the biggest threat to flip the in-state prospect. Exiting the weekend it's the Longhorns that are going to make life hardest on Mike Norvell and staff when it comes to hanging on to Hilson's commitment. Hilson himself told Horns247 it's a Texas-FSU race for his final decision, but Hilson's mother also appears partial to UT on the way out. Of course visit highs are a real thing and you have to let emotions settle down as prospects and their families return home, but Texas appears to have a really struck a chord here. And it could be a recruitment that's growing increasingly in importance as we saw another UT edge rusher target in Hayden Lowe commit to USC this weekend, as well as in-state target Smith Orogobo now trending to Texas Tech. That leaves Hilson, California edge rusher Marco Jones and Georgia standout Isaiah Gibson as the main edge targets of note to join Lance Jackson in this class. Hilson has UCF this weekend before finishing up his official visit circuit in Tallahassee on June 21-23. You can bet the Noles staff will try and lock things down that weekend. For now we're keeping a much closer eye on this one. (South)

ANOTHER TEXAS-FLORIDA STATE BATTLE EMERGING IN THE SUNSHINE STATE
There may not be a more important position to hit on in the class of 2025 than defensive line, and Texas had one of its biggest targets in Myron Charles on campus this weekend. The four-star prospect from Port Charlotte (Fla.) was also joined by his mom and sister for the visit. And while he's not committed, Florida State has been viewed having the inside track for the 6-foot-4, 295-pounder. While I'm not saying Texas has overtaken that standing, one source believes the Longhorns made "serious headway" for the talented defender. It was Charles' second trip to campus after unofficially visiting in the spring. He still has Miami this weekend and Florida State the last weekend, so he's going to have a lot of in-state pressure to stay home. Texas did exactly what it had to do this weekend, though. We missed Charles on the way out at the Austin airport on Sunday but hope to catch up with him sometime this week. The Longhorns would love to add him to this class, but they'll have to continue battling in this one. (South)

LONGHORNS BUZZ GROWING FOR TALENTED CALIFORNIA DL JOSIAH SHARMA

Four-star DL Josiah Sharma (left) and four-star DL Myron Charles on their official visits to Texas over the weekend. (Photo: Josiah Sharma's Instagram account)

As Horns247s Jordan Scruggs reported entering weekend, Texas is viewed as having the inside track in four-star defensive lineman Josiah Sharma's recruitment over Alabama, based off his conversation with a source on the West Coast, despite many believing it's Alabama that stands in pole position. The Crimson Tide still has an official visit, as does Oregon another dark horse in his recruitment, but coming off his official visit to Austin for the weekend, we continue to like Texas' position here for Sharma. One source earlier this spring told Horns247 the Longhorns weren't going to miss on landing the talented 6-foot-5, 295-pounder, and it looks like that assessment had a pretty good foundation. Still have to let the visits play out as always. Rarely do recruits have bad official visits. Like Charles, Sharma got by reporters in the Austin airport on Sunday, but did say over messaging he'll be back. If there was an out-of-state defensive lineman Horns247 felt best about joining this class it would be Sharma at this point in time. (South)

TEXAS QUIETLY THE TEAM TO BEAT FOR KALEB EDWARDS?
Speaking with sources around Kaleb Edwards throughout the weekend, it's increasingly evident that Texas is a team to watch very closely for the four-star West Coast tight end. Edwards made his second trip to Austin in two months, joined by his dad and a teammate. He spoke glowingly of the experience with Horns247 on Sunday. The 6-foot-6, 225-pounder spent time with fellow California native Spencer Shannon as well as freshman tight end Jordan Washington, and got immersed in the life of a Texas football player. All the talk about who could join Emaree Winston in this class at the position has centered around Nick Townsend and Kiotti Armstrong for most of the cycle. It's time Edwards name is put on equal footing with those two, we believe. Another situation where there are still visits to come to places like Oregon, Auburn, and Alabama. He's already seen UCLA and Washington, but Texas is an interesting dark horse team to watch. (South)

UPCOMING VISITOR NOTES

Texas Tech trending for Smith Orogbo after momentous official visit. (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)

Texas Tech trending for Texas EDGE target Smith Orogbo

Last night I changed my crystal ball prediction for Alief Hastings four-star DL Smith Orogbo from Texas to Texas Tech. Orogbo officially visited Lubbock over the weekend, and the Red Raiders have seized the momentum on the trip. Orogbo is still on the books to be at Kansas (June 12-14), Texas (June 14-16), and Oklahoma (June 21-23) but I'm not so sure if those trips happen, as I think there's a chance Orogbo could announce a commitment sometime this week. You can't ever sleep on the Texas Tech staff for their skill with early evaluations and relationship building, but this felt pretty out of left field based off everything I heard when at Hastings in May. While my crystal ball prediction does accurately reflect the pulse of the recruitment, there's still a chance it could end up getting switched again if he ends up making it to the rest of his official visits. We'll post more on this once we find out more. (Scruggs)

EDGE POSITION COULD COME DOWN TO OUT-OF-STATE ADDITIONS
While it seems as if Orogbo is close to coming off the board, Oaks Christian (Calif.) Westlake Village four-star EDGE Hayden Lowe is actually officially off the board. Lowe committed to USC on Sunday, and a source I checked in with over on the west coast tells me he's canceled his remaining official visits, and will no longer be in Austin this weekend. This development paired with Orogbo trending to Lubbock increases the prioritization of Javion Hilson, along with that of Danville (Calif.) San Ramon Valley Top247 EDGE Marco Jones, who's set to be in Austin this upcoming weekend for an official visit. (Scruggs)

THE LATEST ON SPEEDY IN-STATE WR KELSHAUN JOHNSON AFTER A WEEKEND IN COLLEGE STATION

Four-star WR Kelshaun Johnson set to return to Texas this weekend. (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)

After officially visiting College Station over the weekend, Texas A&M has gained a lot of momentum in the recruitment of Hitchcock four-star wide receiver Kelshaun Johnson, but I'm sticking with my crystal ball prediction in favor of Texas, for now. I exchanged messages with Johnson throughout Sunday, and as things currently stand he still fully intends to officially visit Texas this upcoming weekend. Johnson will be an interesting recruitment to track over the next few weeks with Texas, Texas A&M, and USC rounding out the schools in contention for his commitment which he intends to make ahead of his senior season. USC has had him as a priority for a long time now, and every chance they were able to they sent down their wide receivers coach to see Johnson, which included weekly stops at Hitchcock in January. A&M on the other hand likely offers the fastest path to the field, and Holmon Wiggins is no slouch when it comes to receiver development either. College Station is also slightly closer to Hitchcock, but on the flip side the Aggies weren't deemed serious in this race till a few weeks ago. Chris Jackson and Texas pushed for the G-county speedster to commit earlier in the spring, but he held off on it. Now with Texas trending for several of the top receivers in the nation and Johnson still set to come in on an official visit this weekend, it'll be interesting to see how these next few weeks unfold. If the recruitment was to end today I think the Aggies would be the pick, but Johnson wants to finish his official visit circuit before shutting it down and committing to a school. That gives the Longhorns and the Trojans chances to steer the ship back to the direction, and we'll have to see if that happens. (Scruggs)

WEST COAST OL SET TO RETURN TO AUSTIN, THE LONGHORNS REMAINS TRENDING
Florida did a good job of hosting San Francisco (Calif.) St. Ignatius College Preparatory three-star offensive tackle John Mills for an official visit over the weekend, but I still like my crystal ball as things currently stand. He's set to be at Texas this upcoming weekend and it'll be the last visit he takes before sitting down and settling on a decision.  Although he's ranked lower than some might like, Mills is a stellar athlete at 6-foot-6, 320 pounds and has been of Kyle Flood's main out of state targets since earning an offer at a Texas summer camp. (Scruggs)

Can Texas recapture the momentum for longtime DL commit Brandon Brown this weekend. (Photo: Ryan Callahan, 247Sports)
Texas commit visits Tennessee

In the race to hang on to Brandon Brown, one positive for Texas fans is that he's following through and taking all his visits after a momentous LSU official last weekend. The Tigers secured some flip picks and it appeared likely — perhaps still does — that Brown reunites with Bo Davis. On top of that, Brown's mother appears won over by LSU, at least at this point. The Florida native didn't make any changes to his recruitment and went to Knoxville this past weekend. He's scheduled to return to Austin this weekend where you can bet UT will try and clamp things down.

Five-star WR Dakorien Moore halfway through his OV slate

Duncanville five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore was the only prospect to officially visit LSU over the weekend. While the trip went well for Moore and his family, I still like my crystal ball in favor of Texas and would be pretty shocked if Moore ends up somewhere that isn't Austin. After backing off his LSU commitment a few weeks ago, Moore has said in several interviews he's planning on committing in August, but regardless of when the decision comes Horns247 continues to expect it for Texas. (Scruggs)

LB target updates

After committing to Stanford this weekend, we don't expect four-star 'backer Landon McComber to visit this weekend. Top linebacker target Riley Pettijohn shifted his schedule around and saw USC this past weekend. He'll be at Texas this weekend before finishing up at Texas A&M June 21-23. We still like the Longhorns here. Other targets at the position still scheduled to visit this month include Jonathan Cunningham this weekend and Cali four-star Madden Faraimo the last weekend of the June schedule. Texas gearing up to host a mid-week OV starting on Tuesday

The Longhorns have ground to make up, but will give it a shot for five-star cornerback Dijon Lee. He's set to arrive on campus Tuesday. The Longhorns don't traditionally host midweek visitors but will give it a go for Lee. Bama is seen as the trending team entering the visit for the 6-foot-4, 190-pounder from Mission Viejo (Calif.). We'll see if UT puts a dent in that momentum this week. (South)

Seven would be pretty impressive, considering that we're only recruiting six composite 5-star players at the moment (3 WRs, Fasusi, Brew, and Terry).

I think Hilson and Pettijohn will be five-stars at the end of this cycle if their rankings stay around the same. If you go by the 247 composite, anyway.

something would need to change on both fronts for the composite 5* thing to happen

At 33 composite, he's one spot away from being a 5 Star on their rankings, assuming they do the thing where the top 32 composite players end up being 5-stars. Hilson is 8 spots away. Perfectly reasonable to think either could get a bump and end up 5 stars. Not saying it will happen. But it certainly could. And when was the last time the top rated EDGE player in the country wasnt a 5 star?

We have a decent number of recruits who should be 5 star like Pettijohn, Hilson, Jackson and the TEs, but won't be.

Vogel expounded more on the Kelshaun Johnson recruitment this morning:

"Next is 2025 Hitchcock wide receiver Kelshaun Johnson. Of course, one of the larger surprises this weekend was the speedster receiving crystal ball predictions in favor of the Aggies. However, I am here to share the same sentiment. I have been told the Aggies did a great job this weekend and are considered the leaders.

Of course, Johnson had an opportunity earlier this cycle to join the Texas class and opted not to. Texas has since moved into great positions for three of the country's top wide receivers and just pushed up the date on Tanook Hines' official visit to this past weekend as well. The writing is on the wall for me in this recrutiment."

So they really did go the Nate Kibble route with him - need you to take the offer now or we can't hold it if other things come to light for other targets.

Hines is lightning fast as well, plus they're feeling good about Ffrench, Lockett and Moore. I'm guessing they don't really think they're getting both Lockett and Ffrench.

This weekend, Texas has Moore, Marsh, Johnson, and McCutcheon set to visit. Seems unlikely that all 4 visit. After that, Ffrench and Lockett both visit the same following weekend.

Hines gave ASU a silent commitment in April on his visit. He was part of a tandem expected to go public and give ASU some splash in our area but they never did it. I'm wondering if Hines committed this weekend. If he goes public, Johnson likely doesn't make the visit.

Not sure what to make of McCutcheon or Marsh as anything other than backburner options.

If the recruiting sites determine these guys are only the ~40-50th best players in the country and not top-32 then I don't even know what we're doing giving them an offer

College Football Analyst Harshly Critical of Texas' Recruiting Tactics (msn.com)

Video surfaced on social media of Texas recruits walking into a parking lot full of Lamborghinis on the Longhorns' campus. The implication was that players could earn one of their own.

….Shannon Terry, CEO of On3 Sports, wasn't a huge fan of the Longhorns' recruiting pitch. He posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, "This needs to leave college sports."

This insipid take got buried during the OV weekend news, so I wanted to bump to emphasize how disingenuous this really is.  I had thought the emergence of NIL would finally loosen up the media and let them acknowledge the rampant bag game behavior of the last 15 years.  Clearly that is not the case for whatever reason.

To oversimplify, NIL is an expanded, sanitized evolution of the under-the-table player compensation that a handful of shady programs utilized for years with impunity.  Case in point, I unearthed this legendary post detailing what Alabama football players drove over the years during their time in Tuscaloosa.  Anyone with half a brain cell can see what is going on here, and it is impossible to credibly how this is different from the status quo, much less that it is a better/fairer practice.

It is impossible for someone with as much industry insight as Terry to argue in good faith that the pre-NIL days were a nobler, cleaner time that was better for the players and the spirit of competition.  They’re just mad that Lambos > Dodge Challengers.

That’s why I mentioned I was going by 247’s composite, where they’re ranked 30 and 31. I kind of went away from ON3 after the last couple years and the OTF split.

Anything you now write or podcast suggesting "horns down" is going to get clicks from the SEC knuckle draggers. The Lambo screams are just the latest iteration of that proven formula for media "success."

At this point, if Texas only gets four, it would be somewhat anti-climatic.

That makes me feel good. I mean, sure the Lambos are cool and all, but it's good to see that Texas NIL is not all smoke and mirrors.

Even if Texas doesn't get Hilson, other schools have every reason to be scared. Texas isn't fucking around.

I watched the OT7 over the weekend... spoiler:  Ffrench is a beast.

If we were able to land him and Moore, it's game over for opposing DBs.  And after watching him play this weekend, if we could only land 1 out of him and Moore, I'd take Ffrench... he looked that good.

just to be clear, OTF split from IT, not ON3 specifically.

did 247 go back to giving everyone a 25% portion of the composite? for a while i thought they weighed their results more than everyone else.

Is it fair to feel a little let down with no commits this weekend? I know I know there are silents and we did work on some nice highly rated recruits but not one commit?

As per usual these days expect commitments around end of June into early July with some bleeding into August and football season.

Monday afternoon recruiting nuggets

The Texas Longhorns are coming off a weekend of seven official visitors, with many positive returns as expected.

Steve Sarkisian and staff have a big couple of weeks ahead with a number of recruitments in the balance.

OnTexasFootball provides some nuggets gathered in the last 12 hours.

Nick Brooks, OT, Cedar Rapids (Ia.) John F. Kennedy High

The OnTexasFootball 4-star offensive tackle is fresh off an OV to USC, and gave the visit high marks as expected. This weekend the 6-7, 345 pound road grater will make his official visit to Texas with his mom and little sister. The Longhorns are a serious contender in this one. The main competition continues to be Georgia, although the Bulldogs lead has shrunk since the spring. Georgia has signed 11 offensive lineman in the last two cycles, including a half dozen offensive tackles. Something to lock away if Texas comes out victorious.

More notes from the weekend

Josiah Sharma, DL, Folsom (Calif.) High - Confidence is fairly high after the weekend visit. The big hurdle for Texas if they are to beat out Alabama is the 6-4, 310 pounder telling Kalen Deboer and GM and recruiting ace Courntey Morgan no. That's a long standing relationship Texas must overcome at the end of the day.

Javion Hilson, EDGE, Cocoa (Fla.) High - The FSU commit is giving the Longhorns very serious consideration. Hilson's mom truly likes the idea of her son getting out of state for college, and thought Texas would provide a terrific opportunity for her son. Flipping Hilson has been done once already in the process as he was a one-time Alabama pledge before making the change to FSU.

Caleb Chester, CB, Missouri City (Texas) Marshall - Chester remains a UT lean. He told OTF around lunchtime that he plans to go on with the official visit process and head to Texas A&M this weekend. He is also scheduled to visit Arkansas June 21-23. The visit to Texas excedded the lofty expectations of Chester and family. He checked in for the visit at 6-0.5 and 174 pounds.

Myron Charles, DL, Port Charlotte (Fla.) High - A FSU vs. Texas battle is going on right now. There is more confidence in the Horns ability to battle FSU down to the wire after the weekend visit with Charles and family members. A Miami OV this weekend is also expected to help chip away at FSU's confidence. Of course, FSU will host Charles and Hilson June 21-23.

Ranking the WR's

Texas will host five or six wide receivers in the next two weeks for official visits. The OTF family has asked how I would rank the WR prospects in recent weeks.

1. Dakorien Moore, Duncanville (Texas) High - super duper freak

2. Jaime Ffrench, Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin - AD Mitchell with more acceleration after the catch

3. Dallas Wilson, Tampa (Fla.) Tech *Oregon commit - Does not have OV scheduled

4. Kaliq Lockett, Saches (Texas) High - Very high end body control, catch radius and hand size. Lacks strike up the band speed of some others.

5. Kelshaun Johnson, Hitchcock (Texas) High - would run 10.35-10.4 if he trained for track

6. Tanook Hines, Houston (Texas) Dekaney - Maybe the physical WR of the group. Likes and plays through contact. Some college like as a safety as much.

7. Daylon McCutcheon, Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy - super smooth route runner

8. Andrew Marsh, Katy (Texas) Jordan - Solid hands and body control.

Gerry forgot to mention that he runs a 10.45 100M. I don't get the relatively low ranking of a guy who was very productive as a Sophomore, injured for part of his Junior year with great measurables and great hands.

The reason is that the sports media are the dumbest people in the world paid to write. Your point is clear and right. Their ability to follow steps in reasoning is non-existent. They are profoundly anti-intellectual. They don't look beyond the surface.

As for critical thinking, I give you this annual dance:

Big university coaching job opens up.

Hot current coach is mentioned immediately as a likely target.

All of that is fine. Now:

Every public appearance the prospective coach makes, the geniuses pepper him with, "Coach are you leaving your job?"

Coach: I have no plans. Right now, I'm focussed on this season.

The repeated question is idiotic, but they get dumber.

Sportsguy to other sports guy: "Do you think all of this speculation about the coach is hurting his team?" "Has to be, fellow dumbass, because the question keeps coming up." No acknowledgement that they are driving the controversy because they can only handle one story at a time.

Coach, at end of season when it always fucking happens, announces he's leaving the great program he is with to go to Big U.

Sportsmedia: So, he was lying when he said he had no plans to leave Littler U.

Fucking morons.
