December 4, 20214 yr Popular Post Ewers made comments last year about why he chose to de commit from Texas along the lines that “the program had just been down for too long”. Could be his true reasoning or could just have been a convenient line to drop transferring for another reason he wanted to keep close to the vest. I guess the question is whether Sarkisian in his mind will change that trajectory, and if he feels strongly enough that’s the case to take a chance he wasn’t willing to take barely more than a year ago. Or maybe his one year at Ohio State was enough to convince him that he needed to downgrade his expectations of himself in order to get on the field. There’s a lot of data points along the spectrum between “bust” and “generational talent”. Touted generational talent out of high school has also produced on field results all over the spectrum. Trevor Lawrence was mentioned earlier. Trevor Lawrence went to one of the hottest two programs at the time (Clemson) and proved too good to keep off the field as a true freshman that by mid-season he sent starter Kelly Bryant to the bench. Here at Texas we’ve had a large sample of highly ranked high school QBs from Chris Simms to Vince Young to Garret Gilbert. How did that work out? It took Vince the better part of two seasons to prove undeniably that he should be on the field against the likes of Chance Mock. Simms was decent, but never lived up to the hype. Gilbert ended up being cuttable. Life is like a box of chocolates, but if your program is hitting the all-time lows as this Texas program has been for quite some time, you’ve lost the ability to have your pick of the best pickings available. If an opportunity like Ewers falls in your lap for whatever reason, you take it regardless of repercussions for the Manning recruitment, etc.

If Ewers comes here and Sark has him putting big numbers and has us winning 9-10 games, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Manning’s interest grow. Ewers could and probably is planning on going pro the minute he’s eligible. That means Manning would essentially be the starter and get starter reps the spring after his first season here. Basically he would simply have to wait 1 semester to have the keys handed to him. Ohio state had no idea what they had in Stroud and Miller when Ewers committed. The guy thought he had a fair shot at the starting position but quickly realized Stroud is a stud with more experience in that system. He’s not getting any reps till Stroud gets hurt or leaves. He would walk in and be the starter the minute he sets foot on campus. He’s also seen what Sark can do with JAGs. Anyone watching our offense saw that this offense will be killer if we can get a decent QB. Our QBs missed so many easy throws to wide open WRs. He also knows he gets Bijan and Worthy, two elite skill guys. ou is in rebuild mode, so we should have the advantage in that match up with all their coaches and talent leaving. Ewers gets to come in and be the “savior”. The guy that got us back to winning and beating ou. If he’s a true Longhorn like he said he was as a kid, no way he even remotely considers aggy. That would be a slap to his parents who are Longhorn grads. Edited December 4, 20214 yr by victory88

December 4, 20214 yr Legit QBs will look at the state of our offensive line and run away as fast as they can. The potential for debilitating injury will cause them to look somewhere else.

Decent is an understatement. At the risk of rekindling decades old Simms-Applewhite debates, I’ll simply opine that while those records were impressive, those Texas teams were absolutely loaded with NFL talent of the staying power variety, and Simms’ overall performance fell miles short of some extremely lofty expectations, whether those expectations were fairly placed or not. Simms was THE #1 recruit in the country with pedigree
December 4, 20214 yr I’ll jump in. Simms was a great qb. But he did not have the killer instinct at crunch time. It was what it was.

With my kids who will be going to school starting in 5 years, I tell then which schools are academically prolific and in what areas. I think I have at least 1 college athlete out of the three kids, and we will see. But my affinity for Texas takes a backseat to what is most advantageous for them - athletically and academically. The Eweres probably stay out of it or nudge him to Texas in the event of some indecision amongst equal opportunities.

December 4, 20214 yr Ewers is only 4th string because he graduated HS a year early and didn't go through Spring practices with the team. He's a generational talent that isn't going to wait for Stroud to graduate/get drafted which I fully understand. But that's why I said it was always dumb for Ewers to pick Ohio State. Maybe Ewers knew that Texas didn’t have anything as far as NIL lined up for him and Ohio State threw the kitchen sink at him. Seeing that Ohio State is not going to be interested in shaking up the QB position anytime soon, and Texas is (finally) breaking out their NIL Gustav gun, Ewers could, and should, view this as an opportunity too good to pass up.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There was a conscious effort to tailor the offensive scheme to Vince's particular set of skills.
