I'll come by and pour one out.
If you're serious, maybe I'll pick you up somewhere in the area?
Parking will prob. be a hassle... maybe @Judge Roybeanbag should drive vs. taking my truck.

His skateboard sized car would be an easier one to park

So they're doing a whole hog today?

Sorry I'm missing it -- dealing with a couple of crises.  Please pass along my personal condolences to the family.

Cannot post pics via Tapa, will have to go @ that from my computer later today.

Did see @luke duke, John Lewis, Aaron F. & am hanging with MIA.

No mushrooms were observed onsite.

I'd post a pic of my tray, but MissingInAction already did that.  I will wait on a green light from MIA before I post a pic of me, him & John Lewis.

Also [& you know who you are], a lot of you assholes obviously owe LA (& Ali) a shitload of apologies. When John was fired from the South 1st operation, it was quite bloody & of course not having even a scant of information, the hate for LA was off the charts.

Move forward a few years to the "Official Meat Purveyor" @ 6th & Pedernales & after the investors found out the truth (i.e. a pit was repo'd, bridges got burned), very few stepped up to admit they were wrong about how all of that went down for the schism between John & LeAnn.

With what little resources available to me, I did my best to help John with the South 1st shop. It's like "Breaking Bad" where one small (bad) decision leads to another fork in the road & that leads to another bad one, etc. Nobody can read the tea leaves & of course hindsight 20/20, etc. to know what was coming for the next ~10 years of his life.

Wherever he is, whatever he might be doing, hopefully John has found some respite & is enjoying peace (whatever that is for him).

Is that a Lonestar tallboy or does MIA have carney hands and smell like cabbage?
I think it was some sort of a cider-y craft & even MIA will tell you he has an odor... sorta like "round is a shape, right?"

Hands?  Well... we didn't really touch each other so I can't say anything about that.

MIA looks vastly more rugged than I imagined. I also have the sudden desire to avoid a kickboxing match with him at all costs.

Seriously, condolences to those of you who knew and loved the man. Left Austin before his various enterprises took hold there, so all I "knew" of him stemmed from the bits of gossip that popped up on threads here, ToS, and HF.

It is comforting to see that there are many more layers to a man--even a troubled and tortured one--to those with the patience and empathy to observe them.

RIP, Dark Prince.

Yes.

I don't know why, but it's always a surprise to me when message board users don't look like their avatars.

You mean y’all don’t use your real photos?
I always have assumed you look like your avatar & of course I'm a Burnt Orange hotrod IRL.

I know my avatar is an actual ct scan from my last OR visit.

John Lewis is a known quantity & also doesn't "hide" behind a Shag² avatar, so... yeah.

I have sent many of my east coast friends to Lewis BBQ in Charleston.  They have all been happy.  The last time I was in Charleston was the week before he opened.

He said when he first opened no one knew what a brisket was.

It’s really good.  He could set up shop in central Austin and do well despite the competition, but he is a unicorn in Charleston when it comes to brisket.  There’s probably nothing in a 500 mile radius that comes close to what he is putting out.  This pleases me greatly as Charleston will be my new home this summer.  I have a feeling  I will get to know John pretty well.

That's not all that different than Texans not knowing what a tri-trip is.

I'm sure south Austin's mom is involved in some way.

There's a disturbing thread about that.

I believe it.  The people I went to visit just before he opened didn’t understand until I told them what to order.  One guy went 4 straight days.  LOL

I stood in line at Franklin BBQ with Lewis’ dad when he was working for Aaron.  My CSB.

Sorry I missed it. Looks like a great memorial worthy of Capn Stabby.

I was already smoking a brisket overnight tonight.  Looks like I'm making Cheesy Squash tomorrow too.  RIP.

I give you: The loaded baked potato of squash.

Is there a recipe for this somewhere?

Mine is from a recipe, but not the recipe.  I had the one from Buck's before it went under, which apparently was made from the recipe (with credit given).  Mine tastes close enough to what I remember.  I just found a recipe on the internet and adapted it based on memory and this picture.

JM-Cheesy-Squash.jpg

Chop up 4 yellow squash and one onion.  Fry it up in two tablespoons of butter.  Salt and pepper to taste.  When it's tender, put it in a colander and squeeze the moisture out of it.  Transfer it to a bowl and mix with 1/2 cup of sour cream and 2 to 2.5 cups of shredded cheddar.  More salt and pepper if needed.  Transfer to baking dish and bake (uncovered) at 350F for 25 minutes.
