December 22, 20214 yr Damn, just awful. Also not something I want to think about as my kid is also looking at "routine" football related shoulder surgery early next year.
December 22, 20214 yr Tragic. Hurting family. Cries for them, thoughts of thankfulness for blessings in an upside down world sometimes.

December 22, 20214 yr Popular Post As someone who has had to deal with my 14 month old daughter going under anesthesia 18 times in her short time here so far, it’s a bit unnerving every time. I can’t fucking imagine. Damn
December 22, 20214 yr Terrible. I too get scared when a loved one goes under. A profession where you try to kill somebody, then back it off 5% so they wake up.

Had a friend who had a family member who had that when they were having an ortho surgery. They survived but it was pretty touch and go for a while (also much older). If I recall correctly it's kind of a genetic thing that you and or docs may not really know you are susceptible to until it happens.

December 23, 20214 yr For those like myself not familiar with malignant hyperthermia, if in fact the cause. From the Mayo: (excerpts) Malignant hyperthermia is a severe reaction to certain drugs used for anesthesia. This severe reaction typically includes a dangerously high body temperature, rigid muscles or spasms, a rapid heart rate, and other symptoms. Without prompt treatment, the complications caused by malignant hyperthermia can be fatal. In most cases, the defective gene that puts you at risk of malignant hyperthermia is inherited, though sometimes it's the result of a random genetic defect. Genetic testing can reveal whether you have an abnormal gene. This genetic disorder is called malignant hyperthermia susceptibility (MHS) Malignant hyperthermia susceptibility (MHS) is caused by a genetic defect (mutation). The abnormal gene increases your risk of malignant hyperthermia when you're exposed to certain anesthesia medications that trigger a reaction. The abnormal gene is most commonly inherited, usually from one parent who also has it. Less often, the abnormal gene is not inherited and is the result of a random gene mutation. In most cases, no signs or symptoms of susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia exist until you're exposed to certain drugs used for anesthesia. In rare cases, people at risk of malignant hyperthermia have shown signs of a reaction after intense physical activity during excessive heat or humidity, during a viral illness, or when taking statin medication. If you're at risk of malignant hyperthermia and you don't have a serious reaction during your first exposure to certain anesthesia drugs, you're still at risk if you receive these drugs in the future. Other anesthesia medications that don't trigger a reaction can be used instead. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/malignant-hyperthermia/symptoms-causes/syc-20353750
December 23, 20214 yr Way too early to call malpractice as some have stated above. And none of that matters right now. This is a complete fucking tragedy no matter how you slice it. It's also insanely rare. You don't just refer an 18 yo patient to surgery for an orthopedic procedure and find out he's dead. It just doesn't happen.

December 23, 20214 yr They said anesthesia complications, so my money is on malignant hyperthermia. It was, unfortunately, discovered that I suffered from Malignant Hyperthermia when I was 9. Went in to have my adenoids removed, and woke up in the ICU. Luckily, the doctors acted quickly, but I was kept in the hospital for a few days. From what I was told, I had a really high temperature , my jaw locked and my body was shaking.

The only two reasons I can come up with are MH or they placed the tube in the esophagus. I would like to think that with all of the tools and technology at our disposal that esophageal intubation can’t happen, but there are idiots in every occupation.
December 23, 20214 yr Never heard of esophageal intubation in an elective case. As soon as they hook up to the vent and see no CO2 return they would pull the tube and reinsert or if O2 sats dropped bag until the sats came back up. You can bag a healthy person with a normal airway basically until the anesthetic wears off and they are again breathing on their own. Had to be a rare reaction to the anesthetic like MH or severe laryngospasm or some type of anatomic anomaly. What a terrible tragedy

What a terrible tragedyA former coworker of mine lost his license because he disregarded declining SpO2, no EtCO2, and an increasing and then subsequent decreasing in HR. Though they should be nonexistent given all of the tools at our disposal, there are way too many instances of negligence in airway management either due to idiocy, complacency, or just flat out arrogance.
December 23, 20214 yr MH runs in my family, parents have drilled that into me if I ever need some emergency surgery to make sure docs are aware. Scares the hell out of me

We need immediate opinion, answers, judgement and sentencing right now where the first person to throw out the correct opinion gets international acclaim, adoration and praise. We need it now so we can quickly move on to the next tragedy and start all over.

Probably occurred when be began to have complications from the anesthesia and was misplaced in the esophagus ? Thanks !
December 31, 20213 yr Turns out the surgery complication story was made up and not true at all. (Journalism really, really sucks nowadays).... During the funeral service, which was attended by approximately 1,000 people, the Roper family for the first time publicly addressed the cause of death. Several published reports cited complications from shoulder surgery Dec. 14 as the cause of death, which took place eight days later. But Roper’s father, James, said that's not true. “And he didn’t kill himself," James Roper said. “I want to make sure that’s clear. But even at the hospital they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him." Roper died at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida after falling ill while visiting nearby St. Augustine for a family reunion, according to Patrick Carlisle, the offensive coordinator at Roswell High. The Medical Examiner's Office in Gainesville did not conduct an autopsy of Roper, according to Paula Greer, an administrative specialist in the office who referred questions to the hospital where Roper died.

December 31, 20213 yr We can’t figure out why a seemingly healthy teenage athlete has gotten sick and died. should we perform an autopsy to get more information and hopefully a cause of death? nah fuck it. Sorry for your loss.
December 31, 20213 yr So it went from blaming anesthesia to he died on vacation? Hell at my hospital dying on vacation could still be anesthesia’s fault. Surgeons and Admin don’t need much excuse to pawn it off in anesthesia.
