Not necessarily F1 racing, but it's not a race around the city streets of Monaco or Baku or Singapore or Miami. I think calling Montreal a street circuit is being disingenuous. Montreal shares a lot more in common with COTA than Monaco, IMO Yeah they call Melbourne a street circuit too because it's also accessible the rest of the year like Montreal. Technically they're street circuits, but for racing purposes, they really aren't. 40 minutes ago, ConferenceRoom said: Fair enough. No matter how you slice it, CGV gives you the best of both words with world class event planning and a world class race presentation. Indeed. CGV has their shit wired tight.
October 13, 20223 yr I went down this wikipedia rabbit hole a long time ago. But I thought it was kinda cool that the island CGV is built on and the entire Montreal metro system were built for the 1967 worlds fair. Seems the geodesic dome and the casino are the only big structures left from that event. Most having been demolished to make way for some of the 1975 Olympic venues, including that rowing basin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expo_67

He's talking about parking in some of the privately owned lands near COTA, but not one of their actual official lots. It's a longer hike but you can avoid some of the mayhem occurring in their official lots, where there's typically either zero parking attendant direction (which is a best-case scenario), or there's actively wrong and misleading parking attendant direction (which is the typical scenario). Basically you walk past all of THAT clusterF, and once you finally get to your car, it's much smoother sailing.

Looks like roughly 2 to 3 miles to the Grand Plaza gate depending on whether you stay on the roads or cut through the old rideshare/shuttle lot & take the path from there to the Grand Plaza.
October 15, 20223 yr So, Haas F1 has called a press conference for noon next Thursday at COTA. Interesting. Could be a sponsor thing or a driver announcement, but those things don't usually warrant press conferences, do they?

October 15, 20223 yr This right here is why there needs to be real penalties for RBRs breach. Good on Toto for spelling it out. If there are no penalties, it is a luxury tax, not a cost cap. https://www.motorsportweek.com/2022/10/14/mercedes-willing-to-breach-f1-budget-cap-if-red-bull-face-minor-penalty/

October 16, 20223 yr 23 hours ago, elfenix said: didn't everyone agree on a penalty structure? what does the structure say to do? i assume this isn't hard to figure out. Yep, everyone agreed to it. Also with the Red Bull case, y'all probably know that at least according to AMuS and some others, it seems to revolve around Newey's status as an employee or as a subcontractor. The FIA VP hinted that it's not the big deal is being blown up to be, that they'll probably have to clarify it, and they'll move on. Like Binotto said, gray areas will be found just as they always are in the technincal and sporting regs, and in the first year of a budget cap tweaks and tightening of rule interpretations were always bound to happen. From what I can tell, there's been no indication that RBR falsely submitted paperwork under the budget, but rather it's about the interpretation of Newey's employment status and some employee sick time accounting. Binotto also said the FIA team tasked with auditing all thee teams is only a few people, which explains the multiple delays. Imagine doing 10 audits of that size with so few people, esp with brand new regs where some things haven't been fully defined, etc. Edited October 16, 20223 yr by wood
October 16, 20223 yr ^^ read something that said they have less than a handful of auditors for what is, essentially, ~$1.5 billion to keep up with
October 16, 20223 yr Author They are of course audited by firms for the teams before being submitted. Red Bull uses EY. The FIA then uses Deloitte to audit those submissions. All of this takes a long time. There was also a dry run in 2020.

Yep, and the tech & sporting regs have been around for decades and still get tweaked all the time, even in-season. The financial regs will likely be tweaked this year, and next year, etc, etc. That's just F1. We'll see what happens. It'll be ineresting, for sure.

October 16, 20223 yr It doesn’t matter why they went over. They went over. If they are not nailed, Toto has already said he’s ready to spend. Merc would go 4.99% over for a “minor” penalty. They have the pockets to do it. Either the cost cap is an actual cap or it’s a luxury tax.
October 16, 20223 yr It's what they all agreed to though. I'm not saying at all that I think they should have agreed to it. But all of them did. I'm actually surprised all three of RBR, Ferrari, and Merc didn't see that and just go to 4.99% over just like you say Merc will do next year. It still hasn't been determined how much RBR went over, and it's down to settling on an interpretation that it seems will end up putting them slightly over or coming in under the cap.
October 17, 20223 yr Is there just going to be a Star Wars series for every little thing now? Disney sucks.
October 17, 20223 yr South Austin just posted in the blastfurnace thread that the temp forecast has been creeping up from the 80's toward the 90's for the race this weekend. But when you're out in it all day with nowhere to go for shade, iwalking for miles, etc, it get's prettty brutal. I'm used to playing and working outside in the Austin heat, but at COTA, you're pretty much completely at the mercy of the elements, whether it's hot, cold, or a strom's rolling through. One of the conditions the City Council put on COTA to approve their endorsement of COTA for the METF $$$ was that they had to plant something like 1000 trees. They've gotten $300M so far from that, and will get another $200M the next 5 years, but the only trees I've seen them plant out there are a few scattered around the grand plaza area. October 17, 20223 yr It'll be warm but certainly not the hottest it's ever been for a race weekend out there. And having lived through 2015 and... 2018 maybe?...plus NASCAR in 2021... I'd much rather have some warmth than have the rain. That makes for a truly miserable weekend.

Yeah I actually went through the thought process of "Would I go to the race if I had a free ticket?" when I read your post. I settled on no because I wouldn't know what to do about parking/getting there and back. I assume everything is sold out and the shuttles were insane prices last year when I looked at taking one.
October 17, 20223 yr Actually, if you're going solo, then $35 isn't too bad. No idea on the time it takes. Last year there were three of us, so a shuttle would have run $100. We parked at Danny and Carmen's as mentioned by wood. It was great.

It's just too much of a hassle & I don't wanna give them my money to get shit on the way so many folks have been the last few years.
October 17, 20223 yr Mario in a McLaren at Laguna. BTW COTA is apparently naming T20 "The Andretti". I like it in principle, but why "The", and why not a better turn than T20 ... like T1 (Big red, barf), the Andretti Esses, T10, etc. Any of those would be more appropriate than T20. October 17, 20223 yr That's pretty cool. Although I really hate the nose/front wing on that era of car.
