Got a cool little something for you all. I acquired some old press photo slides of the 1976 USGP at Watkins Glen and went ahead and scanned them using my DSLR, and the results were fun. These were s

That honestly doesn't hurt my feelings. Now if we could get dipshit Americans sports to quit doing the national anthem we would be on to something.

With F1, I like national anthems given everyone is from different places and the tracks are worldwide.

National anthem before a Tuesday baseball game in late July? Pffft.

Jingoism. Nice word. I'm adding that one to the lexicon.

Referring to it as jingoism, rather than simply patriotic or nationalism, is the very definition of a Cloak Room opinion.  We generally do a good job of keeping that bullshit out of this thread.  Please don't be that guy.

One thing I will clarify is I love having a winner get their anthem played on the podium, just like the Olympics. It's more when the promoters pull this shit that I get irked.

I'll make it very simple for you. I don't like anthems, flyovers, and whatever other President Camacho shit you want to come up with. It has nothing to do with politics and every about being white trashy as fuck. If you want to accuse me of something, it's elitism, not fucking politics. The only person making this political is you, so I suggest you don't be that guy.

Elitism?  No, that's not it.

Dickheadism?

Sure.

Who the fuck is president Camacho?

I'll make it very simple for you.  We've been singing the national anthem at UT football games since I was a kid.  That covers presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden.  Which one of them is President Camacho?

Also, what the fuck does singing the national anthem at a UT football game have to do with WHOMEVER might happen to be in the office as president?

What a weird take.

This is where I'm at.  National anthem should be for championships and international competitions only - keep it special.  Never have understood why we need to play/sing the anthem before every middle school rock/paper/scissors competition.  Flyovers are fucking awesome though.

So you older guys, why doesn't McLaren rock that livery anymore, even on a special occasion? The papaya is ok. The special Gulf livery is amazing. Having the throwback white/orange would make heads spin.

Is there some reason they retired that scheme?
***********************************************************************************
Though they just slapped the Marlboro name on there but had the livery design themselves.

Not a dig at all, but if I had to venture, you're under 30?  Are you not familiar w/ a pack of Marlboro reds?

Incorrect on the age. And to me, the color was never Marlboro red, but more of a bright orange, so the connection was never made.

He is the fictional future president from Idiocracy that's intensely patriotic and aggressive. Shoots guns, wears nothing but American flag clothing, and is dumb as a brick.

You may want to get those eyes checked.  I suspect you're the only one in the history of ever that saw that paint job and didn't immediately think of a pack of smokes.

Dude, absolutely nothing. I have never said anything about a President other than a fictional one. You keep bringing this stuff up, not me. Literally nothing I said has anything to do with you enjoying football games with your dad. I clearly said I'm against promoters using all these manufactured spectacles. I find the entirety of modern sports promotion trashy as fuck. I hate Monster Energy, Red Bull, dumb flyovers and the commercialization of the national anthem. For weird takes, taking anything I said as a personal attack is the most bizarre, I'm clearly going after the entities that put on all these events.

I like you and basically the only fault I find with you is you like Ferrari.

The environmental angle of banning military flyovers is laughable at best.

F1 flies seven 747s all around the world, packed full and heavy. They ship containers thousands of miles on cargo ships. And they drive who knows how many trucks and motor homes around Europe each year to take the circus on the road. How many miles are logged by these 747s, massive cargo ships, and trucks? A flyover from a couple of local fighter jets is just too much though.

LMFAO. What a joke.

I understand you now, and I have no love for the commercialism and shameless promotion, either.

But your first statement above, the one I initially reacted to, didn't come across as blaming promoters or manufactured spectacles.  It looked like a broad indictment of singing the national anthem at American sports.  Which is something that's been around for scores of decades.  When we sing the national anthem at a UT football game it's not because an event promoter is pushing it, it's a tradition that many people find valuable, sincere, and honest.  And I have no desire to see that go away.  Others can certainly have differing opinions on that.

Finally-- liking Ferrari is punishment in and of itself.  Not all that different from liking Texas football.  Piling on is just cruel.

From COTA:

Quote

Track Repair Project Underway

For the last few weeks, the track has undergone a large-scale resurfacing initiative. COTA worked with consultants to review asphalt designs and diagnose the parts of the track in need of resurfacing. Ground penetration radar and laser mapping equipment and software was used to map the track and identify the different repairs needed.

From there, COTA worked to repave Turns 2-10 and 12-16 and build a concrete pad to reinforce the areas at Turn 2 and 10. Additionally, COTA worked with contractors to ensure the new asphalt and concrete foundations were even and flush, creating an ideal track for upcoming races and events.

And that's awesome. Like I said I love watching an athlete at the Olympics or TdF or whatever stand on the podium and get to have their anthem played. Gives me goosebumps. It's precisely because I love our anthem that I hate that it's been commercialized. Being played before a meaningless Thursday night game where the WFT and Cowboys help derp around for three hours is a stain on the anthem, not the other way around.

He LOL'd.

I'll be interested to hear from @Atxracer or others who've driven the track, to see if there's noticeable difference before & after, the next time they drive the track.

For sure there will be a noticeable, even massive, improvement in the short term. The whole east side was rough AF.

Concrete sucks in general for paving. The concrete lobby hit a home run convincing the US to build interstate out of it.

I don't mind the continuously-reinforced concrete paving at all, but every time I've seen asphalt paving over concrete, the asphalt doesn't last long, has trouble adhering to the concrete, and breaks up. Hope this is the exception.

if there's anything i've learned in the last 25 years watching F1 it's the fucking german national anthem

It cracks up whether asphalt is over it or not. Concrete is too rigid to place over any subgrade and be subjected to constant cyclical loading. The only way around it is how over passes are done with independent sections with predetermined flex that attach on piers or just do brute force like an airport where it's ridiculously thick and contains more metal than concrete.

No, I meant that even if the concrete holds, the asphalt breaks up. But like you, I also have little doubt the concrete pads will have issues on that soil as well (as Jarno alluded to).

Well it doesn’t matter if the drainage has problems especially over clay

As a side note the music is also used for our University of Pittsburgh Alma Mater.

Uber Alles may be the best national anthem.

That Joseph Haydn knew what he was doing.

Yeah they've been talking about that for a while over on the Autosport Alpine thread. Apparently Rossi started following them yesterday on insta, too. Not looking forward to pink on the car, but I like the $$ they'll get.
