October 17, 20241 yr So far the covers I've heard off that album are all pretty straight up. I guess it goes to show how iconic those songs are -- nobody seems to be able to figure out how to twist them.
October 18, 20241 yr saw the documentary last night. nothing groundbreaking or new really but it was a nice snapshot of the band. tp still seemed like a really down to earth guy even as a relatively new rock star. they seemed like a group of dudes who were truly doing it for the love of music. this is the best of the covers i've heard, haven't liked any of them all that much.
October 21, 20241 yr Saw the documentary today. To say it kicks ass would be to underestimate it. I'm not sure it will be available in theaters any more going forward, but surely it will hit streaming soon, and when it does, check it out. It engendered laughs and a couple of guffaws and a few gasps and mostly just an overwhelming appreciation of that man's talent. His bandmates got a ton of air time and they really added to the story. Go.
October 21, 20241 yr watching tp go through all his memorabilia and then later realizing all that stuff was lost when someone burned down his house was a sad realization. went to the tom petty day concert yesterday at hotel ella. the damn torpedoes are a really good cover band, i've always had my reservations about seeing them but they were better than i had imagined. the drummer really took it over the top. wouldn't hesitate to see them again.
October 21, 20241 yr I saw it in the theater Thursday. Went in with low expectations and was blown away. Great film. When Stan Lynch replies "pussy" when asked what he thinks about while drumming was the most Stan Lynch reply he could have given. It didn't even occur to me that all the memorabilia burned up in the fire. Fuck. Are we sure it was there? They had a separate rehearsal space where Mike and Tom kept all his guitars. Could it have been there?
October 21, 20241 yr it's been a while since i've read the conversations with tom petty book but i believe he mentions losing all of that stuff. master tapes and a couple guitars were the only thing that was spared from his home recording studio.

November 8, 20241 yr unintentionally visted the tp&hb star on the walk of fame while in hollywood for the gilmour concert. would like to know exactly how that thing got cracked.
November 8, 20241 yr I remember laying in bed in the 7th grade back in 1980, the radio/alarm clock came on and Refugee was playing. I immediately knew this was something great. I became obsessed with Tom Petty.

November 8, 20241 yr i'm curious about that because there were several blank stars in prime spaces. i'm sure somebody used to have a star there. maybe they didn't pay their rent.
November 20, 20241 yr SIAP. Read somewhere that TP regretted not including this song on Long After Dark. I agree with Tom.
November 20, 20241 yr Man, Stan Lynch was a helluva musical drummer at that point. Plus, the backing vocals. I love Steve Ferrone -- I email with him now and again, always for advice LOL -- but there is something about Lynch with Petty that was super organic.
November 20, 20241 yr here's a good interview with stan lynch, benmont tench, and mike campbell. campbell's comments about howie epstein are interesting. sounds like stan was the whipping boy of the group, or at least he saw it that way. https://rockcellarmagazine.com/tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers-long-after-dark-mike-campbell-benmont-tench-stan-lynch-interview/

So good.

LOL, well Mike Campbell agrees: Quote Stan is a great harmony singer. He sang harmony in all the early records and tours, and I always thought he did a great job of supporting Tom’s vocal. Quote Stan is essential to The Heartbreakers, in my opinion, especially when we started out. He’s a monster on the drums and a great singer. He’s very intuitive. He plays to the song really well.

I am no drummer, but I always enjoyed the feel and sound of Lynch's drumming, and it's one of the reasons I tend to gravitate toward TP's old stuff vs. his newer songs. I've read in many places about how good Ferrone is, and I certainly have no basis for disputing that. I bow to the experts who say he's really, really good. But Lynch had a certain swing that none of the other drummers associated with TP (Phil Jones, Ferrone, etc.) had.

Thanks for the link. Stan Lynch was cracking me up and reminding me of the Onion piece from way back “Ask a Former Touring Drummer for the Pointer Sisters.” Many of his answers didn’t have much to do with the question and he just riffed on how uncomfortable he was. I never knew much about him or the other guys in the band. Stan has a way with words, very free-form of-the-moment answers, but his brain clearly operates on a high (ha!) if parallel level.

November 29, 20241 yr Stan Lynch was great, but apparently didn't meld with Jimmy Iovene in the studio, unfortunately. I think that's when he started getting more disgruntled with his role.
November 29, 20241 yr Very few people "meld" with Jimmy Iovine in the studio. To my knowledge he has zero musical background, but worked his way up through grunt jobs at various studios. He is well known to be kind of a megalomaniac, and that doesn't always work well with some artists. His track record is pretty much unimpeachable, though. December 2, 20241 yr Driving around today. Fucking beautiful weather. 72 degrees and breezy. I don't listen to music that much in the truck...usually sports or Stern or whatever. Today I was cranking the Petty Channel on Sirius. Mary Jane's Last Dance is such a great opening lick. Is that Tom or Mike on that lick, and what are they playing? It is beautifully dirty. December 2, 20241 yr I've seen it live with tom playing a strat, but the album version sounds dirtier. Maybe a Rickenbacher? I'm really not all that familiar with them. I've never played one or even held one.
March 28Mar 28 mike campbell has a new book, started reading it a couple days ago. i've only gotten through his childhood up to meeting tp and forming mudcrutch but it's been interesting.

He's a billionaire so eventually there's gotta be a doc on Iovine. And it should be fascinating. Swept studio floors. Swapped out tape reels. Might have lucked into his first big break by being awake when Bruce was recording 18+ hours a day for Born to Run and his job as "tape operator" got upgraded to an "engineering and mixing" credit. Then came Damn the Torpedoes followed by convincing Bruce to hand over Because the Night to Patti Smith for some lyric edits. And what he did after that to recognize the emergent power of hip hop and build an audio empire on cheap headphones w/ Dre on Beats? Nobody out hustled Jimmy Iovine. April 1Apr 1 Yeah, I think "Wildflowers" is Petty's best. The songs are so good, the recording is so good, and the performances are so good. Love me some Steve Ferrone on drums in particular.
April 4Apr 4 learned about his from mike campbell's book...this is their 6th gig ever, opening for al kooper in boston. it was recorded and released by shelter records as "official live 'leg". they only had a handful of songs at this point and were scraping to get by. later on this tour they were threatened by al kooper to turn down the intensity of their performance or get booted off the tour. tp said fuck you, we're not changing shit. all the songs from this ep can be found on youtube, there are a couple songs that never made it onto a record. U.S. version (Shelter/ABC TP-12677): "Jaguar and Thunderbird" – 2:28 "Fooled Again (I Don't Like It)" – 5:17 "Luna" – 4:17 "Dog on the Run" – 9:22 U.K. version (Shelter/Island IDJ-24): "Jaguar and Thunderbird" – 2:28 "Fooled Again (I Don't Like It)" – 5:17 "The Wild One, Forever" – 4:40 "Luna" – 4:17 "Dog on the Run" – 9:22 Edited April 4Apr 4 by stc
April 5Apr 5 went poking around trying to find old recordings and found this person's google drive of rare and unreleased songs. lots of good stuff in there. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14ab45LEmq7sfN0a37nyhL4mG3pvMZQnb
April 19Apr 19 I fucking love TP. I got a bunch of Wherehouse Recrds gift certificates when I was like in 5th or 6th grade. Got my first shitty Radio Shack record player (this is probably 1978 or 9). Bought my first batch of records. Doors first album. Regatta de Blanc. Pat Benatar’s first album. And Damn the Torpedoes. I loved that album. Some old dude in Avalon was just playing some old TP. It reminded of my love of TP. He was a fucking gem. RIP.
