February 7, 20196 yr Author Really good George Segal movie coming on, King Rat. Prisoners in a Japanese prison camp struggle to survive. King Rat (Segal) struggles less because he's a wheeler dealer that knows how to get what he wants. Kind of a mashup of Stalag 17 and Bridge on the River Kwai. Very gritty.
February 8, 20196 yr Again this year, I have to recommend HDNET, they've got a pretty solid list of Oscar winners running this month. Quite a few on my "haven't seen that one in forever" list, and they give you plenty of chances over the month to catch them. February movie roster

I watched this yesterday and you are correct.......really good and maybe borderline great. I had never seen it before. Interesting character study. Cool appearance at the end by ole "Family Feud".
February 9, 20196 yr Mr. Deeds Goes to Town was on again on today. Excellent. Capra, Gary Cooper and totally would Jean Arthur
February 9, 20196 yr On 2/5/2019 at 11:56 AM, WhatTheBuck said: Gregory Peck > Cary Grant Yes, the answer is you're on crack. Grant had more range than Peck ever had as an actor. Same guy in every role from The Guns of Navarone to the man in the grey flannel suit (great flick by the way). Grant started as a comedic actor and transitioned right into leading roles in dramatic films. He was an actors actor. Able to be more than just a handsome figure on the screen.
February 9, 20196 yr So with youttubetv, I can record films and am on the lookout for ones that have been overlooked or I haven't seen. As of now, I've got The Crowd, Dodsworth and Holiday checked. What other movies should be on the list?
February 9, 20196 yr Tomorrow night, starting at 8:45 are three great movies: The Thin Man, Mrs. Miniver, and The Best Years of Our Lives.
February 11, 20196 yr Lassie Come Home is on now. We had a tri-colored collie growing up so this hits close to home. The Thin Man follows.
February 11, 20196 yr I had never seen The Great Dictator until last night. What a fantastic film. Being a Chaplin film, there were many laugh out loud moments. And then it got a little dusty at the end, during the barber's speech. "Hannah, can you hear me?" That's one of the great monologues of all time. To think that this came out in 1940 certainly added some weight to it; and it sadly still seems relevant today. Not just because of current DC politics, but general attitudes of hate/love/compassion. Here's the speech: I'm sorry, but I don't want to be an emperor. That's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other's happiness - not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there's room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men's souls - has barricaded the world with hate - has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in man - cries for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say: 'Do not despair.' The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the powerthey took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. Soldiers! Don't give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you and enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate, only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St Luke, it is written the kingdom of God is within man not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful - to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason - a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us unite! Hannah, can you hear me? Wherever you are, look up Hannah. The clouds are lifting! The sun is breaking through! We are coming out of the darkness into the light. We are coming into a new world - a kindlier world, where men will rise above their hate, their greed and their brutality. Look up, Hannah! The soul of man has been given wings and at last he is beginning to fly. He is flying into the rainbow - into the light of hope, into the future, the glorious future that belongs to you, to me, and to all of us. Look up, Hannah... look up!
February 11, 20196 yr I see they've managed to work Kramer vs. Kramer in once again this year even though that movie is hot garbage.

February 15, 20196 yr Father of the Bride is on now. Fantastic movie, and dang, Elizabeth Taylor was so pretty. The Philadelphia Story was on before this.
February 15, 20196 yr Pretty good double feature last night with Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge on the River Kwai on back to back

February 16, 20196 yr Author Lifeboat on right now. Great Hitch treatment of Steinbeck. Western day starts with The Naked Spur at 3am. Some really good ones lined up. The Westerner, The Ox-Bow Incident, How The West Was Won. Good stuff.
February 20, 20196 yr Captains Courageous at 7 tonight. I guess my prime time viewing is pretty well set.
February 20, 20196 yr A River Runs Through It finished up just before Captains Courageous. That got me stuck on the couch for a solid 45 minutes.
February 20, 20196 yr Author Couple of gotta see movies today. 12 Angry Men on at 5:30. The High and the Mighty comes on at midnight.
February 23, 20196 yr Author But the strawberries, that's where I had them. I proved with geometric logic that a duplicate key to the icebox existed.
February 23, 20196 yr I watched the back to back mutiny movies last night. I had never had the patience to watch the Brando Bounty version before in one sitting, but I enjoyed it. The ship deck scenes were pretty convincingly done for the time. Really nice camera work overall, and lots of native tropical chick side boob. Edited February 23, 20196 yr by DougO

His transformation from Fopp to thinking/caring /taking action man is pretty damn strong trevor Howard is one of the great villains in movie history . He was damned good, meaning he was an evil masochistic bastard . it actually holds up well for a movie of the era

They custom built that ship and it sailed until a couple years ago when some idiot thought it would be a good idea to sail through Hurricane Sandy.

I didn't realize that was the ship in the movie. I thought the ship was just a replica built about 25 years ago.
February 26, 20196 yr Author War movies today. Started with Glory followed by Sergeant York, They Were Expendable, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, The Young Lions (gotta admit I'm not familiar with this one), The Dirty Dozen and The Story of G.I. Joe.
February 27, 20196 yr Author One of my Top 10 films. Only Angels Have Wings- Carey Grant, (prime)Jean Arthur, (early)Rita Hayworth, Noah Beery, Jr. 6:45 am Friday. I loved this movie before I ever saw this movie. It was parodied in a Warner Bros cartoon I'd seen hundreds of times before I finally stumbled across the source of the joke and recognized "Calling Barranca!" Just saw a promo for another of my favorites, The Narrow Margin. Not really a film noir, but a fantastic cops and mob on a train story with some innocent bystanders thrown in for good measure. Great, great flick. Friday at 1pm. Edited February 27, 20196 yr by RPM
February 27, 20196 yr Last night I watched Little Caesar, with Edward G. Robinson. Edward was also parodied by some cartoons back in the day, so it's nice to finally watch the inspiration for those Bugs Bunny cartoons. Key Largo is another good gangster flick. "Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?"
February 27, 20196 yr Author Love Key Largo. Great performances all around, but nobody could have pulled off the role of Rico but Eddie G. Soldier! Soldier!!!
February 27, 20196 yr Just now, RPM said: Love Key Largo. Great performances all around, but nobody could have pulled off the role of Rico but Eddie G. Soldier! Soldier!!! Peter Falk played a really really good bad guy (see: Murder Inc). He didn't have the Eddie G persona, but could have been a more evil, sociopathic Rico. I love E.G. Robinson, but thought he was a bit cartoonish at times, like Cagney and his bad guy characters. still always fun to watch.
February 27, 20196 yr Author Peter Faulk is great, but he would have been way too young to play Rico. George Raft might have worked, but he couldn't carry a scene like Robinson.
February 27, 20196 yr 10 minutes ago, RPM said: Peter Faulk is great, but he would have been way too young to play Rico. George Raft might have worked, but he couldn't carry a scene like Robinson. Oh yeah at that time for sure. I never liked George Raft that much. He was kinda boring to me, but he did play the bad guy a lot. EG Robinson had so much more range, He was a great actor, and a movie star. Raft was the type cast movie star, bad guy type IMO.
February 27, 20196 yr Author Plus you're doing scenes with Bogart and Lionel freaking Barrymore. Rico had to be powerful, dominant and oppressive over 2 acting heavyweights and be believable doing it. Eddie G was.
March 1, 20196 yr Coming up tonight, "Somebody Up There Likes Me," my favorite Paul Newman movie. Yes, I said it.
