I ended up speaking with my real estate agent. It was pretty similar to what you said. There was a Grizzly attack in whitefish where the bear broke into a house and killed a woman, but she was fairly confident that there was more to the story. There are more grizzlies as you head towards Glacier so on the West side it is mainly black bears. She lived at the top of Mountain next to her mom and she barely saw any bears other when they did stupid things like leave food out. But her mom who was Nextdoor had lots of issues. Her mom had fruit trees though. And she had 3 terrier that made lots of noise. overall, she thought it would be fine to have an island grill in a sun room. Trash seems to be a bigger issue than grills. And if the grill is cleaned and kept in the enclosure, they probably wouldn’t mess with it.

Gtfo and start a new humble brag thread about which appliances work the best at …..

December 28, 2024Dec 28 Last Christmas, I went to London. On the flight back, I got up to walk around a bit (even though my 1% ass was in First Class) and I asked the FA for another drink. We started chatting. She told me that she lived in PHX with her husband who was an AA captain. They had just bought a place outside Anchorage. "It's awesome...it's got 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, a big barn, and BEARS" as if bears were a fucking amenity. She was sweet, but quite crazy I'm sure. The place they bought was only accessable by plane, so they bought a Cessna, and her husband was teaching her how to fly it. She showed me this video. This is the house that they bought
December 28, 2024Dec 28 as to the London trip, I posted elsewhere about meeting this guy on the same trip:
December 28, 2024Dec 28 I was hoping that he would jump on to tell me how big of a nuisance bears are. Obviously, he cooks all the time in his cabin but doesn't have a bear problem. OTOH, we haven't heard from him in awhile.Bears are not an issue inside your house. But you have to be careful with trash. You're welcome.

February 8Feb 8 Does our resident Alaskan hibernate during winter? I haven't been in this thread long enough to know if he returns with the arrival of spring.

So, no, I'm not moving to Churchill Canada anytime soon.

March 14Mar 14 Quote Jessie Holmes, a former reality television star, won the longest-ever Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Friday, celebrating with fist pumps to a cheering crowd and posing for photos with his two floral wreath-adorned head teammates, Hercules and Polar. Holmes was first to the finish line in the Gold Rush town of Nome on the Bering Sea coast. The race began March 3 in Fairbanks after a lack of snow forced changes to the route and starting point. That made the normally 1,000-mile race a staggering 1,129 miles across the Alaska wilderness. Holmes finished in 10 days, 14 hours, 55 minutes, 41 seconds. "It's hard to put into words, but it's a magical feeling," Holmes said shortly after crossing the finish line. "It's not about this moment now. It's about all those moments along the trail." He will take home $57,200 for winning the race, along with $4,500 worth of gold nuggets and 25 pounds of fresh salmon for finishing first in earlier stages. —— Holmes now lives in Nenana, where he works as a carpenter and lives a subsistence lifestyle. From 2015 through 2023, he was a cast member of "Life Below Zero," a National Geographic program that documents the struggles of Alaskans living in remote parts of the state. I watch that show on NatGeo, easy time killer.

Life happens and I needed a break. My father died (not a big loss, he was an asshole of the highest order). We bought a house on 15 acres about 3 miles from the cabin and I’ve been immersed in renovating. I think it would have been easier to just build new. Mom is having some health issues back in Texas and we’re prepping for her possibly having to move up here so we can care for her on a daily basis. We promised her she would never be in an institution. It’s been nice having a place of our own to do laundry, take showers, and haul water to the cabin. Neither of us want to live there, so we are going to Air BnB it until we need it for either Mom or ourselves.

Yeah, I’m not so sure I would be sleeping at the same place where I was roasting moose ribs - when a bear can smell 20 times better than a bloodhound. I would drink my coffee, eat my protein bar and go to bed with a Ruger Alaskan near my head. I’m not saying I would actually sleep. Maybe if I had a Tibetan mastiff watching over me.

We still live at the cabin. After 15 years of it, I prefer that lifestyle. My wife does too. Having our own private amenities have been very nice as I approach my mid 50’s though. A regular shower is a treat that most of us take for granted. Plus, we’re renovating it ourselves and we work at stoners pace. My wife is having fun decorating. I’m in the process of staining and sealing all the crown molding she decided on. The cabin is the cabin. Not much she can do with a 400 sq ft clubhouse.
May 19May 19 So how big is the house that you're renovating? If you prefer living in 400 sf, what constitutes "too much house" for you to be comfortable in?I've gotta imagine getting supplies for a reno takes just a bit longer up there. You're probably not running to a Home Depot for just a few odds & ends. Is this a full gut job or just a refresh?

One owner, everything was original. We gutted the inside. Installed a new septic system, replaced all plumbing with pex, installed a filter and water softener. New pressure tank and hot water heater. New cabinets and countertops, all new electrical and plumbing fixtures. New flooring throughout. All new appliances. It will get a new metal roof and new deck this summer. It needs new exterior paint. The previous owner replaced the boiler system 2 winters ago. Logistics can be a bitch. Fairbanks is 80 miles away, so you make sure your lists are up to date.
