They make massive plugs in sewer lines, clog and cause excessive wear on pumps, clog aerators, and generally fuck up everything in a sewer system. These are the ones I use while traveling. https://kandookids.com/kandoo-products/flushable-wipes/ They claim to be plant-based and biodegradable. Is that just marketing bullshit?

Been using them for over twenty five years and never had an issue.

Is that just marketing bullshit? I have to go with maybe. I'm not familiar with these specifically. I have heard that truly flushable wipes are being worked on, but not that anyone has made it happen yet. Biodegradability is not a good measure for judging how these will affect a sewer system. Paper towels are plant based and biodegradable, but still cause problems in sewer systems. Your hideous pumpkins, which I love, are biodegradable and plant based, but they would cause problems in a system for sure. Try this: get two glass jars with lids, between a pint and a quart each. Fill each up half to three quarters with water, then put a wipe in one and an equivalent amount of toilet paper in the other. Put the lids on and shake them for 15 or 20 seconds. If the wipe falls apart like the TP does, they're good to go. If not, please don't flush them.

If you, like most people, are on a public utility sewer system, ask the folks who work on the collection system, lift stations, and at the treatment plant if they are having the problems for you. A surprising number of things will flush down a toilet. I have seen panties, bras, men's boxers, swim trunks, tees shirts, photographs, folding money, string, a banana in a condom, and other things that I'm sure were flushed that had to be pulled out of a lift station pump or made it to the bar screens at my plants. Just because you can get it down the toilet doesn't mean it should be in the system.
December 9Dec 9 @Scheiss Meister I will eventually do the coins in jars experiment and will let you know. But in the meantime, I'm going to continue comfortably living with plausible deniability. Have you ever seen a boot? I've heard powerful toilets figuratively described as being able to flush a boot, and I assume that's just not possible unless we're talking about some toddler sized, but I figured you could give confirmation.

No, I've never seen footwear that I thought was flushed. I did help clean out a manhole that had been used as a trash dump by a construction crew that had a flip-flop in it, along with debris like trimmings from 2x4s, bricks, shingles, a broken hammer, and various trash. They popped the cover off and just used it as a dumpster until it started overflowing. Assholes.
