I'll limit this to CCR, but it's really a discussion about John Fogerty, who for some odd reason rarely seems to get mentioned in the "greatest songwriter" discussions.  I don't get it.

CCR's first 6 albums went platinum, and were released in a span of 2.5 years.  TWO. POINT. FIVE. YEARS.  The first album had success with a couple of covers -- "I Put A Spell On You", "Susie Q".  After that, John Fogerty went nonlinear.  Over the next 5 albums, the band had hits with his songs such as:

"Born On The Bayou"

"Proud Mary"

"Bad Moon Rising"

"Lodi"

"Down On The Corner"

"Fortunate Son"

"Lookin' Out My Back Door"

"Run Through The Jungle"

"Up Around The Bend"

"Who'll Stop The Rain"

"Long As I Can See The LIght"

I mean, WTF?  That's nuts.  We're talking skill & success nearly on the level of The Beatles, and I'm not even considering other covers ("Heard It Through The Grapevine") or later solo hits ("Centerfield", "The Old Man Down The Road", etc.).

My favorite?  One of their more minor hits, "Lodi".  Such a dusty, laid back feel, it perfectly encompasses the lyric.

"Oh lord . . . stuck in Lodi again."

Also maybe the most unique voice in rock and roll

Bruce wasn't as skilled at induction speeches yet, but he fucking nailed what CCR meant to all of the young up and comers of that time.

If you don't have Creedence with you on a road trip you done fucked up.

Green River was probably my favorite CCR song, not just because it’s great, but because Green River the band was probably the best grunge band ever, before grunge got popular.

That induction ceremony was a trainwreck of intra-band squabbles.

No kidding. Bruce was running off that stage in fear of being caught in the crossfire.

I know this isn't a CCR v The Beatles thread, but if I had to choose one to listen to the rest of my life it would be CCR.  Don't @ me bro

Fogerty is a MASTER at writing opening hooks.  The only person I can think of that can rival him is Joe Walsh.

they're great, but i was extremely surprised when i learned that those motherfuckers are from the bay area california and not from the louisiana swamps.

In a perfect alternative universe, John Fogerty and Tom Petty would have collaborated on an album and it would be nothing but perfect licks, hooks, riffs, and melodies.

Saul Zaentz Is the primary reason. He was a piece of shit. Though he apparently was savvy enough to get Fogerty to sign a terrible contract. Fogerty was young, fresh out of the army. Had he not signed that contract CCR probably doesn’t break up, at least not until they exhausted their streak. And Fogerty would hold a far higher place in R&R lore.

This likely belongs in the Unpopular Opinions thread, but if I end up in hell, CCR will be playing on an endless loop.

Fogerty was on Steven Colbert last night.  Colbert interviewed him and then he performed a medley of hits.  The first 3 were a little rough, given his 80 year old voice, but he wrapped it up with "Fortunate Son", and his anger was palpable.

He just played here last weekend, heard it was pretty decent show. They said he really rushed Fortunate Son though as if he really didn't want to be doing it.

CCR is one of those bands whose place in music history I certainly respect.  The run they had during the 2.5 year period that Jimmy Jazz referenced in the OP rivals or beats anything that any other band ever did in a similar period of time.  But while I like several of their songs (Green River, Fortunate Son, Bad Moon Rising [which always makes me think of An American Werewolf in London]), I don't LOVE any of them.

I sure do LIKE both of those songs.

Little Richard, Fogerty and Cobain had the intangible vocal quality for rock and roll. Maybe McCartney and Westerberg.

Lennon, too.

As a kid born in ‘80, Creedence was a staple in the car.  Always say that the first song I remember remembering the words to as a little tike was “Lookin Out My Back Door”
