We just added a large deck to a property that we will need to stain once it dries out.  We recently added a new boathouse that was stained but used the recommendation of the builder and recently re-stained a back deck at our house using a stain the guy suggested.  I'm not sure how I feel about either of the stains used.  Anyone have a recommendation for a really good long life stain?

What material is your deck made of?

#2 treated yellow pine? Teak? redwood?

FWIW

We stained our back deck with PPG Proluxe 2 years ago and its holding up well.

Did the back deck on house I lived in several years ago with Behr stain.  Behr stain is (or was then) dogshit.

Stain will only change the color of the wood.  Oil will preserve it and improve longevity.

Pick one.

Remember.   You live in Texas.

TWP is what we've used.  If it is a new build of treated boards, they need to air out a couple of months before staining.

Yeah, we are going to let it dry out a few months. I think TWP is what my boathouse was stained with. I like the color a lot, was maybe hoping for a bit not waterproofing.

Coming in cheap. Thompson's semi transparent "timber brown" on a mostly old deck. We'll see how it holds up.

I’ve had luck with Behr premium semi transparent cedar

A deck will wear quicker than a fence but I did my fence with Behr semitransparent cedar a year ago and it’s still looking great. Consumer Reports did some good multi-year testing on stains and it fared better than most in those.

What lake is this? That's gorgeous.
