This has to be a positive. It usually takes a .500 record for someone to get pissed. Maybe if they recognize there is an issue in April, instead of October/November, things can change.......maybe

I feel like we go through similar reactions from players every year but they usually happen mid season. Perhaps it's a positive that they are talking about it in Spring but I am too jaded from my past experience with Texas football to give them the benefit of the doubt. Hope this is the season we truly turn this ship around.

  • Well moro ojomo is getting a surly nil deal for sure now

I went down to 6 wins after the Sark/Ojomo tweet and then back up to 10 wins after watching Ewers make two practice throws.  Situation is very fluid.

What? There are a lot more NFL guys on that team, than what anyone would project on this team.

NFL starters at all three levels of the defense.

So do we have any idea who FCB is referring to that has gotten into some off field trouble recently?

SIDE NOTE: This week there was player on defense who got in some off-field trouble that could impact his development/playing time going forward. This player has an incredibly high ceiling, and coaches haven’t given up on him.

Well that statement eliminates about 3/4ths of the defense lol.

On a serious note, that makes it sound like it’s someone who hasn’t played much if he’s talking about ceiling.

The most WTF has got to be Adrian Phillips.  He looked awful here but has had a pretty nice NFL career.  I would have never put money on that.

You predicted an NFL career out of Geoff Swaim?

Feel like he’s probably the most obvious choice. What about Derrick Harris? Haven’t heard anything about him this spring

Best running back group. Not the best running back

Ibraheem got kicked off the team months ago after he was charged of sending everyone nudes of a woman (ex gf?)

I understand what you are saying, but if you have a guy that can gain yards every time blocking or no, and you never take out of the game, anyone else is irrelevant.

However, point taken, we are loaded at RB.

1 minute ago, Eggo said:

Predicted?  No, but Swaim was at least a good blocking TE even in college.  Not that a blocking TE means a whole lot to an offense, but guys like that can carve out a niche in the NFL.

yeah I’ll take ricky williams and priest holmes. though bijan and rojo can compete for 2nd place.

that team had a lot of dudes who actually played in the NFL (this is from pro football reference, which i think means they actually played in a game or were on an active roster?)

Ricky/Priest>>> Bijan/Rojo

You have Selvin Young and Jamaal Charles or M Brown, J Gray, Donte Foreman as a group also.

Saying the best RB group at Texas is a pretty big statement.

Just wait til RoJo adds a little passing to his repertoire this year.

And I’d consider Rickey and Priest a pair not a group. I did like Shon Mitchell, but he’s a poor man’s Keilan Robinson.

We’ve been fortunate to have a lot of greatness at that position.

Just run with a bit of positivity for awhile.

if you’d prefer our group now to 1996 I’d say that was an interesting choice.

The better argument is Campbell and Leaks are a superior pairing than Bijan and Rojo. Leaks was coming off almost 1,500 yards before Earl came in and took over the lead role. HE went to a 5 year NFL career. Guy went from a star to a back-up

That's what I thought too, but he's still listed on the website.

To be fair, Roy also had Chris Simms and Major Applewhite, not Hudson Card and Casey Thompson's 1 working thumb, plus he had actual other receiving threats around him (BJ Johnson had 41 catches, Hodges Mitchell had 37, Motrell Flowers had 22.

Meanwhile the guys who had the 2nd most catches on the team (26) missed 2 games and 5 games each (Bijan and Whittington), the next 2 guys behind that were Joshua Moore and Cade effing Brewer.

That 2000 team was also a significantly better team all the way around, 7-1 in Conference and #12 in Coaches Poll. lost by 3 points to Stanford and 5 to Oregon.

All of this to say, Roy Williams was a better college WR - but Worthy has the potential to be that good and break some of those program records or be in the top 5 - already #38 all time in program history in yards (won't break this just because he is going to be here 3 years), #47 in total catches (same, plus Shipley had almost 250 career catches at Texas despite only having 43 catches his first 2 years in the program) , #19 in recieving TDs (this would be hard to beat Roy at 36, but only needs to get to 20 to be #3 in program)

To be fair, Roy Williams OC was Greg Davis.

4 hours ago, Had Enough said:

Did he produce to that ranking in college? Post college? From Day 1, Roy was better. And what collection of geniuses rated him higher than a 10.5, 25 foot long jump, large WR? If guys were retailed after college, I’m not sure BJ was top 50.

BJ was the #2 guy. I’d say the transfer is #2. He could be considered a better athlete. So that’d pit Whittington versus Thomas as #3. I’d choose Whittington, the moron that I am.

In the end, I’ll take production over ability. That’s what we need.

Me too, but that is hardly what you claimed or what we are discussing.

Greg Davis is one of the most prolific offensive coordinators in the history of college football.

I’ll take production. So for our current group only one has produced here. He only produced for a year. Too. This group has not touched several other groups in production. My statement on production in no way conflicts with my initial statement on talent of the current 3.

There was never a definitive statement from me stating they were the most talented 3-some. Only that they could/might be.

But Worthy is awfully talented. Only Roy Williams is a definitely a more gifted talent than him. Neyor is somewhat TBD, but he checks the boxes. Whittington is damn talented too as a #3.

There’s certainly several groups historically that can be discussed in a top tier, and this is one of them.

In looking back at my statement, I did not intend to mean top 3 talents ever but rather the collective talents of the top 3 WR corp on any given team. If that was not the direction others took it.

Well, we at least got one guy on the team who will say what we are all thinking out loud

Quote

Longhorns’ defensive lineman Moro Ojomo is entering his fifth year at Texas and won’t turn 21 until August. But he’s at the point in his college career where he has plenty of perspective and doesn’t hold back.

On Thursday, Ojomo weighed in on what he likes about this team at the mid-point of spring, what needs to change and how he drives himself crazy wondering if his teammates are as obsessed as he is about changing the culture at Texas?

“Whatever senior class changes the tide for Texas is going to be extremely memorable, because it’s the players,” Ojomo said. “Coaches come and go. The players have to make a stand and say, ‘Enough is enough. Seven-and-six BS Texas isn’t happening anymore. We have the ability. We have the talent. Get your mind right. We’re gonna go win.’

“I drive myself crazy, because I’m always thinking like, ‘Are we national champions? Are we doing enough?’”

Oromo said a huge point of emphasis among the seniors on the team is creating more of a “family and brotherhood” amongst players.

Here’s a rapid-fire recap of Ojomo’s Q&A with the media on Thursday:

— On some things he likes about the team at the mid-point of spring:

“I like Kitan Crawford and Mo Blackwell in the safety room. I like the mold of Morice Blackwell. I think Jaylan Ford is an NFL prototype linebacker who should have an amazing season. He has the attributes, and I think his head is getting on right.”

— On senior nose tackle Keondre Coburn:

“Keondre looks really good. He’s lost some weight. He’s moving the best I’ve ever seen him.”

— On tackles Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton:

“They’re starting to develop and be a lot more technical and applying things Coach (Bo) Davis goes over in practice and like actually doing it, which is really nice to see.”

— On freshman defensive end Justice Finkley:

“He’s a young buck. Powerful. I mean really powerful for a young guy. He’s gonna have to get in his playbook a lot more and know what’s going on, but he can help us. He’s gonna help us.”

— On how Texas can improve its pass rush:

“We have to first of all stop the run. I think we have the ability to rush the passer. But it pisses me off about last year that we didn’t stop the run. We can’t pressure the quarterback or get sacks and pressures if their quarterback can run a two-dimensional offense.

“The edge has gotten better. Hopefully, we get this TCU defensive end (Ochaun Mathis). We need some depth in that position. Once we stop the run, we have some guys who can rush. (Byron) Murphy can rush. (T’Vondre) Sweat can rush.”

— On sophomore defensive tackle Byron Murphy:

“Murphy, raw talent-wise, is probably the most insane defensive lineman I’ve seen while I’ve been here. He has the ability to be just an unbelievable player, and I think he has the right head on his shoulders. If he does it right, he should be out of here in three years - just keep working and expanding his game. He’s insane.”

— On senior defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat:

“Sweat has come along a little bit. I think his mind is starting to get better. He’s another guy who has a lot of football IQ. He just knows how to move well football-wise. I think his mindset was a lot better than its been in past years.”

When asked where Sweat’s mindset was in past years as compared to now, Ojomo said:

“When he was younger I think he was - not necessarily F the team - but more like an individual. And I think that’s the problem with guys at this institution. I think Georgia has maybe five defensive linemen who will be drafted like in the top 50. If we get our team right, we’re all getting drafted. So, I think guys are coming to that realization that everyone on this D-line can contribute, and we can all get drafted and live out our dreams.”

— On junior defensive lineman Alfred Collins:

“I think he has really honed in on being technical. Alfred is one of those guys who has these highlight plays that make him look really well, but it’s a body of work. Your lows can’t be that low. So, I think he’s picking it up. He’s asking a lot of questions about where to put his hands and what keys to read? I think he’s really trying to figure it out, and it’s competitive. The more competition we have, the more we all raise our level.”

— On if NIL deals can get in the way of trying to create more of a family bond and brotherhood amongst players:

“Guys don’t want to get together. Guys don’t want to spend time together. They don’t see. They’re so young and so stupid. I don’t know how to explain it. They need us. They need the team, and it’s so difficult because NIL makes your mind turn its focus to more social media and more exposure. It’s a very in-depth problem.

“Don McPherson, the former Syracuse quarterback, said in a statement when he was talking to us that NIL was like the NCAA telling you to go get your own money. That’s dangerous, because it’s like they’re being distracted from football. And (their focus) is crumbs instead of the whole cake. …

“It’s so hard. It’s terrible, because it’s like they just can’t see it. It’s like, look, if you invest, and it’s hard. That’s another thing - a lot of these guys think it’s not going to be hard because they’ve been the greatest athlete.

“They have to somehow see their 24-year-old self, their 25-year-old self, maybe signing their second NFL contract for like 50 million as opposed to seeing their 20-year-old self making 40K off of NIL and sleeping with women and drinking and all that.”

— On how most every player on the team thinks he’s going to play in the NFL:

“They have to understand it doesn’t happen on autopilot. There’s so many people who have this effed-up mentality of thinking they’re gonna go to the NFL, and they haven’t touched the field. It’s the funniest thing to me. It’s like, ‘You haven’t touched the field in three years.’ And they’ll be like, ‘Oh no, I’m gonna get my bread, dog.’ It’s very funny.”

— On how some players fail to make the most of their opportunities:

“It’s sad. I have this accountability group, and I met with my group, and I tried to impart on them how many guys I came in with (in 2018) that had talent and have done nothing with themselves. It’s sad. They have a bare-minimum degree and made no money off football. I tried to impart on them that you can’t waste this opportunity. Some of them escaped (to the NFL) - Caleb Sterns, Joseph Ossai. But there are a lot more who should’ve been with them that didn’t make it out.”

— On if his younger teammates listen to him or the senior leadership:

“They’re 18 and want to chase women, chase money and chase alcohol. They don’t see the future. They’re very distracted by what is in front of them. That’s a hard thing, especially for guys who haven’t been in a winning culture.

“To me, it’s very easy for a lot of these powerhouses to keep going, because it (the culture) is established. So the new guys come in, and they’re like, ‘Oh shit, this is how we have to do it. This is what we do.’

“They always talk about coming here and changing stuff. It’s like it’s ingrained. Like you’re uprooting - what? - 10 years of shit that’s just been let go. They’re more worried about being on Sixth Street than like balling and making 50 million. It’s crazy as hell. I don’t know why?”

— On sophomore defensive end Prince Dorbah, who has been getting reps with the second-team D-line this spring:

“I think he might be growing up now. We need that. The biggest rooms we need to some things out of - I’ll start with defense - is the safeties and defensive ends. I really want to see some things out of those rooms.

“Ovie (Oghoufu) is an animal. He has the right mindset. Ovie’s ready to boom. There needs to more like him. Over in our safety room, you’ve got (Anthony) Cook leading them. There are guys who have talent who need to figure it out.

“On offense - straight O-line. Christian (Jones) has got to figure it out. Andrej Karic and Jaylen Garth need to grow up. It’s time. It’s time for them to figure it out. Like I told them, ‘You’ve got seven guys coming, and they’re all hungry.’ It’s like the DT room. You’ve got two or three guys coming in. They all want positions.”

— On how defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski is connecting with players:

“I think PK (Kwiatkowski) is stepping into his role more and being more dominant of a figure. I think (Gary) Patterson being around is really going to help that room. He (Patterson) also can provide the safety room with a lot of wisdom. I mean that guy has produced how many guys at that position?”
