2022 Summer Season: Flavor-Aid (Strength: Prison Wine)

Featured Replies

Watched the presser and the only difference between them is that Card seems more scripted in his responses. After the first question it was basically "Yeah, well, like I said I try to focus on myself and learn from the past."

Quinn just wants to win games and get paid.

I went down to 6 wins after the Sark/Ojomo tweet and then back up to 10 wins after watching Ewers make two practice throws.  Situation is very fluid.

Was wondering why the DT's pad level was so high and then noticed it was 45 who was playing and it made more sense

Have never coached football a day in my life, but 45 and 93 on the interior might as well have bought a ticket to watch this play

Maybe they thought the offense was doing a victory formation play

supposedly the guy who gave the video to that twitter dude didnt like it was posted.  great throw though.

Probably because that is from the recordings the coaching staff uses for film breakdown.  I imagine he could get fired for that.

Exactly.

Thats not some high school coach who secretly took a video, that’s somebody with access to the practice cut up and inside the program. Sending that to somebody on Twitter wasn’t a good business decision.

They were tired and the session is called “fastball” this may have been a two minute drill portion of practice.

If this is the quality of film we are using to analyze our strategy, we might as well just have the team practice under a freeway overpass.

That was Justice Finkley for sure. Ovie on the other side. Sweat and Broughton in the interior. JT Sanders caught the pass with Cook in coverage.

No no no. We need to grade the entire OL and DL based on one out of context play that none of us were supposed to see anyway.

Never happens if Saban is the coach.

mistake for putting it on twitter.. should just post it here.. we know how to keep a secret, right @NowThis ?

Greg Davis would have this team averaging 40ppg.

Bijan and Rochon would stunt and flex on them hoes.

As long as nobody blitzed Hudson Mock, he'd throw darts.  Ewers and Maalik would RS.

Even the OL would look serviceable.

Get that Lik'm'Aid, GD.

That's because Bama doesn't need to tape practice. Saban has a photographic memory, and when they want to "review film", they just hook him up to the A/V system like he's C-3PO telling a story to Ewoks.

100%. That game will be hyped to the max. We shouldnt even be ranked preseason.

NIL

Way behind the scenes, there was good news on the NIL front this week for the Texas program. While we won’t get into specifics, a hurdle of sorts was cleared, and more activity is expected in the coming weeks and months.

It couldn’t come at a better time for Texas.

Other schools in the state are ramping up their “legal” NIL efforts. Texas Tech is attempting to go beyond its crowd source effort of the Matador Club, and schematically reach into the coffers of its biggest donors, especially those in Dallas. And SMU backers are said to have recently raised $3mm annually for their own efforts.

No word on any transparent NIL efforts in College Station. But that should come as no surprise.

TEAM

Thursday’s practice was a great day for both quarterbacks. Each have shown improvement throughout spring. Hudson Card has much better overall command of the offense than a year ago. Quinn Ewers’ confidence grows with each practice. Both were “slinging it” on Thursday. Since last Saturday’s scrimmage the competition has really heated up with Ewers getting more and more work with the ones.

Hayden Conner and Jaylen Garth have both worked at left and right tackle, with Conner also at right guard. Coaches are just trying guys in different spots to see what does and doesn’t work. “They like Conner’s versatility and want to see what he can handle,” said one source.

That written, the best tackle on the team is Andrej Karic or Christian Jones, with most sources giving the slight edge to Karic.

Tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders plays both attached and flexed, but mostly attached. JTS has serious 1-on-1 ball skills the staff wants to take advantage of. That versatility will make for some interesting looks. His position-mate Gunnar Helm is said to be not great at anything but good at everything. Jahleel Billingsley is a very difficult match-up and we'll have more on that.

Looking at corners, Jahdae Barron has probably been the best one this spring. He is quick, versatile, and just a good overall player. After Barron it’s Ryan Watts or D’Shawn Jamison. Watts’ physical advantage playing the run and disrupting route timing are something to monitor. Jamison has been more consistent in coverage than in the past and is the most likely to flip the field. Freshman Terrance Brooks is hard-charging and will play a lot. Don’t forget Jamier Johnson. The second-year player had a particularly strong week of practice.

I love how every $9.95 update gasses up every position until they get to OL and it’s just “uh yeah they’re practicing and trying different stuff and the guys that were bad at OT last year are still the best they’ve got…”

Clemson is not going to the playoff either.

One of the most valued metrics in college football models like this is Returning Offensive Line Starts. These models work under the assumption that, if a team is choosing to start a player again, he must be a quality offensive lineman. If a team were to curiously start 4 substandard offensive linemen in consecutive seasons, the model will crank out bad data.

so... when we have 2 freshmen starters in the fall, we're going to suck again?

I’m not arguing those CFB projections, but you ignore pretty much all stats/information that is positive.

There’s really no reason to believe we’ll regress on the Oline. In almost any year, you get at least one guy who has improved or plays better than anticipated and beyond expectations. It seems that if Banks comes in at LT and can be average, that is a huge upgrade in most peoples minds.

We played teams that defensively created chaos. On a per game basis, we played 3 of the top 17 in average TFLs per game. All 3 in consecutive weeks, the last two had Bye weeks prior to playing us. The third we screwed up by jacking our lineup due to injury. Take out G5 teams it was 3 of top 11. Six conference foes were top 38. There were 5 SEC teams in the top 38. 7 from the ACC. 2 Big 10.

Now let’s take the Stuff Rate. Texas was best in the Big 12 on the Oline with the lowest rate. Obviously there are sacks allowed. We were tied at 61st in the country in sacks allowed.

You can argue Bijan saved some here. Probably but he wasn’t far and away the broken tackles leader either. I’d also counter that our QBs didn’t save us much either.

But the point is that our opponents didn’t sit back and play passively. They attacked. And they were good at it. Not just against us but every team they played.

So I’ll ask simply this. Do you expect our Oline to be better next year? Even incrementally. Year 2. Good coaching. Additional year of maturity. Great incoming talent.

Sure I guess. Can’t get any worse
