Not sure if this is an NIL thing, but interesting

That’s how Gary Parrish is framing it

It appears an undefeated college football team ranked in the top 30 of the AP Poll just lost its starting quarterback ... because of an NIL dispute. https://t.co/jnHeyFBkms

Thanks for the thoughts. The original HWH team getting the original IP out into the open and getting the longform IRS approval were instrumental in all of this. That's @SquishMitten @RGBIII @SydneyCar

Outside of unifying all initiatives under one umbrella, which wasn't a small feat for the parties involved, there are two really big things here: 1) All players in all sports will be making money

I went to the tournament and the gala. Kind of obligated on it and to pay for it, or part of it. It was all well done and a ton of money was raised. We’d committed to a nut for this new cycle for full

UNLV starting QB quits over NIL dispute

I'm shocked an oregon state fan would fall on that side of the argument.

Sport feels like it's operating just fine to me.

Also seeing rumors that he walked into the coach's office and demanded more NIL because he was doing well.  Obviously, no clue if that's true, but curious to see how this unfolds as more info comes out.

That's a school sponsored leak

Has anyone watched the guy? I’ve seen a little of him. He’s a far better running QB than passing QB. UNLV is winning as much because of their defense as anything.

Decent G5 running QB. Nothing that screams big NIL payday.

Maybe.  I'm inclined to wait and a week or so before I decide who I think is the asshole.

All financial commitments for UNLV QB Matthew Sluka were completely met.But after wins against KU and Houston, Sluka’s family hired an agent and they collectively feel that his market value has increased, per source.

Bob Sluka, father of UNLV QB Matthew Sluka, told ESPN that his son's agents agreed to an NIL deal with the school back in February, never received payments despite requests and never asked for any adjustments to the original deal. "We have no idea what the hell happened."
"They keep deferring, 'We don't know. You have to wait,'" Bob Sluka told me. "Then it was like, 'We're going to give him game checks.' So we're like, 'OK, great.' We did not ask for a single dollar [more]." Sluka added that Matt's living expenses weren't even covered. https://t.co/Dsl5EbGW7v

Should be pretty easy to disprove this claim by the father if Sluka actually did receive NIL payments.

Whole thread from Thamel with quotes from the agent:

Former UNLV QB Matthew Sluka’s NIL representation, Marcus Cromartie of Equity Sports, told ESPN that Sluka was verbally promised a minimum of $100,000 from a UNLV assistant coach for transferring there. None of that money was paid, per Cormartie.

We been through this exact thing at TA&M. Its was NOT the Coaches‼️ It was the collective. We transfered there in January. We didnt receive an NIL payment until April. The payment was minus 300k less than what we was told. Not to mention some other things…. They waited until our…

How long until someone tries to pay a player to redshirt before their schools play each other?

Or just feign sickness for one game. Example: would some deranged Ohio State fan with money to burn have been ready to pay J.J. McCarthy 100k to wake up sick on the morning of the Ohio State/Michigan game last year, thus probably insuring that Ohio State makes it into the playoffs?

Wow.  Who is "Coach Glove" talking about, at A&M?

Coach Glove is Deon Glover. His son is Tony Grimes. Maybe A&M saw how poorly Tony played in 2023 Spring ball and decided not to pay. He transferred to UNLV in 2024.

It would cost a lot more than $100k to get a QB at a school like Michigan who is likely going to be a high draft pick to forgo the game (and take the risk of something getting out).

Yeah and it wouldn't be able to fly as a legitimate NIL deal, so it would have to be a bag under the table.  In which case, there's no difference between now and the past 100 years when any booster at one program COULD potentially pay an opponent not to play.

NIL contracts are fucking contracts, and they get drawn up and metrics have to be met for payment to be received. I'd hate to see the morons who get slapped with discovery and the contract says "We need you to sit out X game and claim it's becuase you're sick." Or even "X player agreeds to be paid Y dollars by the Collective Representing Opposing School In Week 5 for future services rendered." That would raise some eyebrows. No, it would just be a bag.

This UNLV situation would never ever happen at an SEC school. The SEC bagmen deliver every single time

4th string RB may have been more about playing time than money.

Not really the 4th string RB.  He's the fourth leading rusher, but the transferring QB is by far the leading rusher and they seem to use three running backs about the same amount:

But yes, it was clearly about playing time that he thought he was promissed.

Bear Alexander getting displaced from the hole on the game changing play and then going on a twitter rampage for more playing time, and then immediately quitting is just an all timer for me 😂 https://t.co/wedX3jD7JQ

If that's what happened, you've got to think that a coach of any big time program is going to think twice about offering him a scholarship. Not smart on his part.

He’s the DJU of DTs. Some idiot P4 program is absolutely going to shell out more cash and convince themselves that they can fix him.

$3 million would make it tougher for the JJ McCarthys of the world to go pro early. They would still lose the elite of the elites but this probably helps hold onto and attract the mid to late first rounders.

Dave Portnoy will pay up to $3 Million in NIL to get Michigan a QB @stoolpresidente @Barstoolpickem

Any of y'all see this bullshit?  Zero chance it's true.

The Sac-12, the committee helping Sac State get to the FBS level, has raised $35 million in NIL funds in the last 24 hours. The money "demonstrates the civic + business commitment of all of those in the greater Sacramento region," says co-chair Josh Wood.Ultimate goal: $50M

I wouldn't be surprised if it is. Much like Charlotte has done with UNCC, Sacramento is a rapidly growing city that is happy to spend to be a part of the big leagues.

It makes a lot of sense for Portnoy as he can get serious returns on his NIL spending through publicity and player/program access. His math is certainly different than your average ultra-wealthy alum who won’t get hardly any ROI on that type of deal.

My immediate thought when I saw this was that it's insane that it isn't UC Davis going for this type of opportunity and that I'd assume they'd be a much more attractive school to either league
