It seems like the air conditioning unit is causing internet outages, I suspect it's voltage fluctuations. I've got the modem plugged into an inexpensive surge protector but am wondering if something more might be needed.

Anyone else get surly over this problem? Do I need a power conditioner?

You may need an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) or a uninterruptible power supply (UPS) if you're getting spikes.

My suspicion is that it's voltage drops that are causing the problem, not spikes. Suppressing spikes I kind of understand, mini "brown-outs" I'm not sure what to do. Can an AVR adequately pick up the voltage to ensure smooth power?

Put your modem and router on a UPS.

Is there any particular performance feature that I need to be looking for? Can just any old UPS detect and react quickly enough to brief voltage changes?

How about a shampoo and conditioner all in one?  That's pretty powerful.  You can't argue with results.
