RIP Dracula Gottfried.

I had almost forgotten how funny the Howard Stern show used to be.  I remember listening around the first time Nelson Mandela visited New York after being released, and Howard had Gilbert and Billy West in the studio at the same time.  The three of them, plus Fred Norris just riffing off each other almost made me drive off the side of the road I was laughing so hard.

Just watched his roast of George Takei. Holy shit, the context of it all is incredible. Genuine belly laughs all around, including from George himself. Not just gay jokes, but his explaining the absurdity of them is just fantastic. I can't think of a comedian today who could pull that off, not because of "wokeness" or whatever someone wants to complain about, I just can't think of anyone with the personality that could exude that kind of confidence and hilarity in the same context. I'm sure someone could, but nobody comes to mind. He, Norm, Saget, and Bob Einstein were so good at these horrible dirty jokes. Maybe it was about the time they came up. A whole host of greats lost in a short amount of time.

You're thinking of Quiznos.

As a lame teenager, I once used the Gilbert Gottfried voice to prank call a random person. Except instead of saying “This is Gilbert Gottfried” I said “This is Hal Holbrook” because somehow I got the names confused. True story.

This still kills me from his roast of Bob Saget.  When he tells the joke about the Olsen twins look at John Stamos in the back row and Jeff Ross in front of him fall out of his chair.  Dude was a comedian’s comedian.

He's the only comedian who would beat the ever living shit out of an audience with his torrent of jokes...

That Takei roast above is a great example of that and they loved every second of it

I think it's actually funnier your way.

Life was a beating before the internet. It was like, “what’s the name of that comedian with the weird voice and squinty eyes? Yeah, Hal Holbrook.”
