Didn't he give Texas the middle finger on his way out of town or was that his LBJ teammate?

He could definitely stand to be more physical. But he would he still be a huge addition. I hope we're tampering with him like hell

Edit: more highlights. I'm sure it's wishcasting but I would love to see this kid in a proper shade of orange

FWIW - PFF was pretty down on him this season.

FWIW - the insider from the IT board who has a connection in the locker room is now saying that its looking more and more like Whittington isn't returning.   Might explain why Ketch and others are now pushing for 2 WR in the portal.

More Mukuba - he liked this tweet:

I'm older now, takes a few days to fill a cup.

He was great in Brent V’s scheme. Looked lost and disinterested in current scheme.

I remember that we went pretty hard after this kid but there were concerns about speed and athleticism. Eight catches for 34 yards doesn't inspire a ton of confidence but he was just a freshman. Could he maybe fill the need for a wide catch radius guy? Seems like a classic Herman-type receiver and I'm not sure we need any more of those

I knew Whittington wasn’t coming back the moment Ketchum said to expect him back

Legitimate-ish question/observation:

Is it possible that some of the cold feet for Whittington has to do with the complete lack of accountability in the WR room, the bowl game target distribution, and the knowledge that he will never receive the kind of reception volume that more ...diva type receivers... receive, thus making returning kind of pointless?

It certainly could be a part - but Whittington has talked about Marion rekindling Whittington's love for the game again, and I just don't know if he'd be talking in those kinds of terms if he had those kind of issues with the WR room.

Or….the guy who said for the past year that this would be his last season actually decided to make it his last season.

Not arguing, but there was a lot of chatter about him changing his mind and deciding to come back, then the bowl game happened and he seems to be gone.

Maybe when it came time to actually enroll in classes and do this whole thing again for another season he got cold feet.

The guy definitely could have gotten a few more passes thrown his way, but he was top 10 in receptions and yards in the Big 12 for receivers heading into the bowl game. I see many acting like we treated him like DJ Monroe with a reserved spot on the sideline during offensive possessions. He played all 13 games despite being banged up in the middle of the year but finding a way to play through it. That is a huge win for a guy who couldn’t stay on the field for 3 straight years before this.

He is a good player who I would have welcomed back with open arms, but he had his limitations and mistakes just like everyone else.

Man if you want to say "because Worthy got a lot more targets in the bowl game" just say that

IT portal update tonight:

-January 18th is deadline to enter portal, January 25th the last day they can enroll at Texas for the spring.

-No movement expected at QB, TE or DL.

-They aren’t hearing RB is a need but they suggest adding a bigger back might be smart

- Better chance they take an edge player than LB

-Their opinion that the WR room will look better by the end of the month

-Catalon visiting Purdue Thursday/Friday and Texas on Sunday.

-Best guess is 3-4 more portal players are added

Almost that whole list is schools who had a coach just get fired or a first year coach getting rid of all the dead weight after their first season.

And then there’s Jimbo in Year 5 topping the list. You hate to see it.

Don't worry, 1/3.of the roster is bread and they'll replace them all in the portal

Transfer portal breakdown: A look at the 5 busiest teams so far

Mike Huguenin•about 22 hours

transfercoaches.png

From left, Michigan State coach Mel Tucker, Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham and Colorado coach Deion Sanders.

Quote

The transfer portal window opened December 5 and is open for almost three more weeks. And there’s another 15-day window that begins in late April.

Here are the five teams that have taken the most commitments out of the portal so far in this cycle.

1. Arizona State, with 19 portal commitments

2022 record: 3-9
The buzz: New coach Kenny Dillingham spent the 2022 season as Oregon’s offensive coordinator; before that he was the OC for two seasons at Florida State. Thus, he worked for two coaches who used the transfer portal successfully, though with different plans. The Sun Devils need both stability and an infusion of talent. The stability part likely takes a while. Dillingham and his staff have done solid work in the portal. Still, they haven’t brought in any slam-dunk “this guy will be a standout” help – at least not yet.
The 3 best incoming transfers: 1. OL Ben Coleman from California; 2. OT Aaron Frost from Nevada; 3. RB Cameron Skattebo from Sacramento State.

2. Colorado, with 16

2022 record: 1-11
The buzz: New coach Deion Sanders frequently used the phrase “I’m coming” when he first spoke to his new team, and and transfers are coming to play for Sanders and his staff. The one facing the most pressure unquestionably will be QB Shedeur Sanders, who came with his dad from Jackson State. But lighting up SWAC defenses is a bit different than lighting up Power 5 defenses, especially when your surrounding talent is lacking. Eight of the 16 transfers thus far are former FCS players, while four are from other Power 5 schools. Shedeur Sanders is one of six former Jackson State players to transfer to Colorado. The most important is former five-star recruit Travis Hunter, who played both corner and receiver at Jackson State but would seem to be needed the most at corner for a Colorado defense that was atrocious against the pass. The Buffs need a lot more talent from the portal.
The 3 best incoming transfers: 1. CB Travis Hunter from Jackson State; 2. TE Seydou Traore from Arkansas State; 3. WR Jimmy Horn from USF.

3. Michigan State, with 13

2022 record: 5-7
The buzz: The Spartans have been busy in the portal. At the same time, there are questions as to the expected impact the new guys will make. Mel Tucker and his staff hit big on their 2021 transfers. That wasn’t the case in 2022, and the Spartans tumbled down the Big Ten East Division standings. It’s fair to wonder if the 2023 transfers will be more like the ’22 guys than the ’21 players.
The 3 best incoming transfers: 1. EDGE Tunmise Adeleye from Texas A&M; 2. RB Nathan Carter from UConn; 3. RB Jaren Mangham from USF.

4. UCF, with 10

2022 record: 9-5
The buzz: Gus Malzahn and the Knights are moving into the Big 12 next season, but as it stands right now, they’ve lost better talent (WR Ryan O’Keefe, CB Davonte Brown, LB Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste) than they’ve brought in. That’s not to say they haven’t found guys who will help in 2023. It’s just that being able to sell the idea of being an important player on a Power 5 team doesn’t seem to have the appeal that might’ve been expected. One positive: UCF’s recruiting class features some guys who should provide immediate impacts.
The 3 best incoming transfers: 1. OT Marcellus Marshall from Kent State; 2. LB Antonio Grier from USF; 3. S DeJordan Mask from Texas State.

5. Florida State, with 9

2022 record: 10-3
The buzz: Mike Norvell has done yeoman work in the transfer portal in his time at FSU, and this offseason is no different. FSU has made, by far, the biggest splash in the portal of anyone thus far, bringing in six potential starters already. The Seminoles picked up one of the top offensive tackles, a potential starting guard, two of the top tight ends available, maybe the best defensive tackle and arguably the top cornerback. For much of this season, the Seminoles started 11 former transfers. Next season should be more of the same.
The 3 best incoming transfers: 1. OT Jeremiah Byers from UTEP; 2. DT Braden Fiske from Western Michigan; 3. CB Fentrell Cypress from Virginia.

Makes sense. They already have 2 good young players, got the unexpected return of Richardson and are bringing in two more Ss from the portal. Of course, they probably think Grimes is a CB.

Continued excellent roster construction from Jimbo.

Given that Catalon's super religious parents vetoed Texas because they thought Herman was a scumbag, I'm sure the Jimbo Fisher Aggie Football Experience is right up their alley.

Not that PFF grades are the end-all be-all, especially for OL, but Hutson was the lowest graded OL on Texas this season - and the second lowest graded in the Big12.  Campbell (he only played 20% as many snaps and much of those in garbage time) was the 4 highest graded overall on Texas and the highest graded pass-blocker.

*11 Bowl games not including playoffs left to go.  I look forward to the flood of talented players Texas has been waiting for, to hit the portal.

Is Hutson still the second worst after this last run of bowl games?

Gundy isn't popular with the players and they do not like the OC.
