Worthy just gave $2,000 to Kelvin Banks mom’s Go Fund Me a couple of days ago. Could be about that too.

All twitter messages from anyone associated with college football are coded messages to this board about that person's disposition toward our program.

What's the ballpark estimate for current Texas football players (scholarship players on the roster) portaling out?

That goes up or down depending upon the impact of the NIL floor at each position relative to other opportunities elsewhere. There will also be some trap door work, I'm sure. I could easily see 20 guys on the roster vanishing into the portal. Hall, Wright, Merrill, Worthy, Davis, Kicker, Punter, Alexis, Parr, Ibraheem, Crawford, Coffey, Collins, Dorbah, Harris Jr., T Johnson, SGW, Liebrock, Omeire, and Card. That's not including surprises, like someone from that last OL class or DL class. Lot of candidates to leave early, for one reason or another.

the fact that we have 2 LS, 2 punters and 2 kickers on scholarship is a bad use of scholarships.

I don't think Trejo, Auburn and Edwards are on scholarship (Trejo and Auburn are noted on the chart).

The problem is the 3 guys that are on scholarship are backups at their position.

I don't think Liebrock has even dressed out for a game this year. He is definitely being pushed to the portal or headed towards medical retirement.

I'm a little worried about Banks. He will get some huge offers which seemed to matter quite a bit in his original recruitment. Hopefully just me being paranoid.

It was also reported he had some family stuff that came up that also nudged him towards staying closer to home.

Which we all saw play out, and the Longhorn community stepped up bigtime to help his family out. He's the least likely guy I am worried about.

Obviously anything can happen, but OL and DL are positions where the NFL finds you regardless of where you play. You don’t need to transfer to get more touches or showcase your talent at a higher level like the skill positions. You still have guys portaling up from G5/FCS to P5, but you don’t see as many lateral moves at those positions for the big time guys. Maybe changes with NIL, but I’d be surprised.

If this all comes down to money for every player, then congrats on creating a mini-NFL. One NFL was enough.

We went from over-regulated to just about unregulated in one slick move. I wish smarter people had been put in charge of figuring out NIL.

I'm sure the actual NIL value of Kelvin Banks is through the roof. What, maybe a thousand people know his name beyond Longhorn fans? I just use Banks as an example. I like everything I see about him. I'm just pointing out the absurdity that paying top players is much related to NIL at all.

I'm just enjoying the game week to week. We'll see.

Nobody is in charge of figuring out NIL. The US Supreme Court smacked the NCAA and told them "You can't prevent college athletes from profiting from their Name, Image, and Likeness. " The NCAA has little to no say in terms of NIL.

If you're hoping for there to be smarter people in the state governments of Texas, Ohio, California, Alabama, Louisiana, etc. to enact laws around NIL - I have some bad news for you there. There aren't smarter people in state legislative bodies.

What you say about Banks is true for every freshman or sophomore starter at Georgia, LSU, Florida, Alabama, Oregon, USC, tOSU, etc. At some point, teams are going to learn that they are going to have to spend as much or more on their starters as they do on their recruits. Ohio State coach Ryan Day put a number on NIL cost and says that the Buckeyes need $13 million to keep its roster intact.

What do legislators have to gain? Not a damn thing. And it is victimless. So, nothing will be done. Even the schools are unlikely to lobby as it is not their money that is being wasted.

You seemed to have missed my point that these paychecks for players are not related to the market value of their NIL. We've not merely begun "preventing college athletes from profiting from their Name, Image, and Likeness." We've likely created a semi-pro league where pay, again, is not really related to the value of a player's NIL.

You can also shove your bad news for me. I don't need the world explained to me.

Apparently you do.

No one missed your point. It's just that everyone else accepted this inevitability a long fucking time ago and stopped bitching about it. Like it or not, this is the new reality, and thread-shitting about it isn't productive and is tiresome for everyone else on this site. You're posturing like you're the smartest person in the room, when in reality you're the only person that doesn't seem to understand or accept the way things work now.

We get it. NIL is a thinly-veiled construct for Universities and supporters of those Universities to pay college athletes to play sportsball at that University, and does not correlate to their actual promotional value. You also myopically view NIL through the narrow lens of endorsements, and do not take into consideration charitable causes and community-event contributions athletes from the University can make through NIL funds like Texas One. There is no established "market rate" for that. Each University can set that rate at whatever they deem appropriate. It's not fucking capitalism.

And you're not mad about NIL. You're mad about the transfer portal. Paying athletes for their time and public profile isn't creating a semi-pro league. It's that athletes can transfer to any school they want whenever they want (yes, I understand that under current rules you only get one transfer without having to sit out, but that's going away too, so prepare your vagina for that inevitable shit show) and those transfers are largely being driven by how much NIL money a player can get in an "open market".

Lastly, accepting this new reality, wouldn't you rather be a supporter of one of the richest Universities and alumni-bases in the college sports landscape? To me, this new reality seems to be a competitive advantage for Texas. That's a good thing. What if you were a supporter of a school like Nebraska?

You're not pointing out anything that every single person on this board already understands (Football board, not so much). Hold on to your butts. It's gonna be a wild ride.

That's probably a low estimate.  If you start at a baseline of $100k per scholarship, you are already to $8.5MM.

That means there only $4.5MM more to fend off portal competition for upwards of 20 players plus promises to 20+ recruits.

FCB this morning

— Xavier Worthy is engaged and connected with his teammates at Texas and doesn’t appear to be focused on anything other than helping the Longhorns win. Worthy might need to be coached a little harder by receivers coach Brennan Marion as Worthy’s pursuit and tracking of the ball this season appears to have dropped off from last season, when Worthy was a freshman All-American with 62 catches for 981 yards and 12 touchdowns. With two regular-season games left, Worthy has 44 catches for 584 yards and nine touchdowns.

Yeah, no shit.  That was apparent from day 1.

I wasn't claiming to be bringing news. My post was mostly a lament at how things will change. I also don't say there is a remedy.
