The buzz around USC is this upcoming season is the year they go all the way. Pockets are opening up to make a big push.

I'm calling it now: a repeat of Jan. 2006. Texas and USC in the title game.

Does anybody know where I can find the link to the updated scholarship player count that was dropped in here awhile back?

Rumors out there that Neto may go find a guaranteed starting spot somewhere

Thanks! I remember this is the other one I was going to ask about. This will work, but the other one was a link to what looked like an IT site where I can't remember who was keeping track of portal additions and subtractions. Not really descriptive, but I appreciate this.

There's the potential painful OL transfer.

unfortunate. i get it, but unfortunate.

then again, if he can't beat out C Hutson/DJ Campbell/H Conner/C Williams at guard, he can't beat them out...

I think people were guessing Agbo but considering Neto's kind of flaky recruitment, it makes sense. I hope we can keep him: It would be nice if he learned the center position.

When Jones decided to come back it definitely increased the chances one of these guys would leave. Hopefully Cam Williams can develop nicely into the starting RT for 2024.

Considering how his recruitment played out, that doesn't shock me at all. The guy committed to Texas and then 24 hours later was talking with Baylor about flipping.

I'm sure if he leaves he'll go somewhere as a package deal with his brother (who isn't as good as the rankings say).

To be fair Neto looked the best of the interior guys. Would be a shame to lose him.

Yep. Jones coming back was great for the team in 2023, but likely meant that at least one of our 2022 kids would leave. This is why you keep stacking OL classes. Also, it appears that is younger brother is not a priority at this time.

We took 7 OL in that 22 class. We knew when we took them somebody was going to transfer.

personally i'd consider bear a necessity, old mother nature recipe

I would love to have Bear. He is an obvious upgrade. He would allow Texas to have a 4 man rotation at DT of future draft picks. That said he is the epitome of a luxury pick-up. DT is arguably the best position on the team. It is also on the verge of becoming a question mark next year. The staff needs to develop some of the young guys this year or they will be forced to hit the portal hard at DT next year. You could have Collins, Murphy, Sweat leave after this season. Bear would most likely be a 1 and done. He would also make it harder to get the young guys needed snaps this year. Bear would be a move you make, if you are looking for a title run this year. I dont think Texas is at that point and everything Sark has done the first 2 years has been with a focus for the future.

He was a true freshman last year. He won't be able to leave after the 2023 season.

Maybe he can't beat them now just yet but if he continues to compete he has the potential to become damn good. What if one of guys you mention wins the job, Neto leaves and the guy becomes the next Jake Majors. I rather he stay and compete but that is in our teams best interest. He has to do what he thinks is in his best interest. This whole thing of saying it is fine that they leave because they are not starters as freshman or redshirt freshman is so aggy to me. Can you imagine saying it is fine to every Poona Ford type kid after their freshman year.

You're just not keeping everyone. Fucking Georgia is losing quality starters. So saying "I get it, but unfortunate" feels pretty non-aggy.

He is going to be a huge ticket and there is no way you can anticipate that he will stay for 2 years. Word was he had his hand out during his recruitment and he is already looking for the next one. Bear has shown that he is a straight up mercenary. I would say colleges need a Cap specialist from the NFL, but it is way more complex in college compared to the NFL. These are essentially 1 year contracts.  I know people want Texas to make that move, but it isnt their money.

Anytime you can improve the front 7, which Bear would do, you take a guy like him. Especially considering what we have at the position this year and our first year in the SEC.

You guys are being way too specific. I’m sure it will all work itself out but we’re not in a position at the moment to go after luxuries for 7 figures. It’s just never going to be a productive game to play unless it’s a QB anyway.

I agree with the sentiment, but how many 7 figure guys exist in the trenches... and then how many of those will actually ever enter the portal at any time in their college careers?

I don't expect the opportunity to popup very often.

The money isn't there. The interest in focusing $1M+ on a single player without corporate help isn't there. It would be at the expense of retaining and recruiting many other players. Texas isn't Oregon. Hell, no one is. USC's not Oregon either, but they've got a shit ton of money and it's being focused almost solely around transfers. They're doing that at the expense of any organized NIL focus on the 2024 class.

Everything in this cycle is becoming extreme and trending towards a NIL bubble for athletes who have no fucking idea how any of this works for everyone else. They think there's an endless spigot and there isn't.

We are at a convergence of the last of the free COVID transfers, the lack of real transparency for NIL deals, the first real tax season for players getting big NIL pay days and several teams trying to maximize their “shot” because they see potential outlook of the ebb and flow of talent   in the NIL era and are trying to maximize the value of their own stars.

If I was in USCs shoes, I would be blowing the bank as well. If you are a few pieces away, you got to try and go for it knowing that the new playoff alignment makes the chances much more difficult in the future. They are poised for a go all in type season with a returning Heisman QB, just like we would be if Bijan was returning.

The Alexander rumors that make no sense to me are places like OU where they aren’t close to winning it all and at that point why leave UGA? I feel like USC pulled him into the portal and we are just being thrown out there since we were willing to see what the sticker price was and like previous other USC target we make a great lightning rod.

He should not have followed "unfortunate" with "then again," which is basically but and everything before but does not count.

First, thanks for the link it has been bookmarked. So Burnt Ends ($10) plus $22 (soon) allows us to call ourselves what? Grassroot donor seems to CR. So what is the name  and acronym. Small Money Donor or Cheap Ass Money Donor or Minimum Money Donor. So many possibilities.

I am quoting a set of screenshots from the aggie screenshot thread to be illustrative and also to sprinkle in some humor with the darkness of this post.

In reality, some of the aggie takes in this screenshot are true for everyone. Specifically:

1) This is going to be a crazy period. There are a lot of players across the country debating testing the waters. Good ones. They've seen what teammates are making before having ever played a snap or after transferring in and now the guys who are already producing want a cut. It's a fucking tsunami. It's hard to combat. Even being organized, it's a task for every school. I mean that, too. Every school.

2) The velocity of the moves this period could be shocking. You think it would be a great idea to put a big play in for Bear Alexander? What about 50 players of his skill level? You can't sign everyone.

3) Every school also has to try retain all of their guys that they want. Not every player is currently getting any or some money. Some may not be playing much yet but have value to the program and the staff wants to keep them. That's a tough sell to exhausted NIL efforts already. It's also a hard pitch to corporate. This is why a "floor" is so obviously important and will only grow in importance.

4) Schools are going to lose guys that they don't want to lose. It won't just be ATM. There is a high likelihood that Texas will be impacted too. Texas now has a talent rich roster and a lot of mouths to feed.

5) Even well-staffed scouting programs are about to overwhelmed. Surprises could well be plenty.

6) My big hope is that most schools are fucking hustling to retain their own guys and the liquidity simply isn't there to justify a bunch of exits.

7) Before we have too much fun at the expense of ATM clowns, stay humble until this is over and Texas has made its way through it.

I'm not trying to scare anyone, but this shit is a fucking beast and it isn't nearly tamed.

trill committed to the good guys

Edited by Bodacious Bevo

A question for the lawyers, can the NIL deals have a non compete clause. Meaning you have signed with us and must promote us while playing for team A as long as you have not been dismissed by team A and cannot go promote anyone else while playing for anyone other than team A for N years. Do the rules need to be rewritten so that something like this can work or will labor laws make it impossible? At some point signing a contract has to have consequences. Ask Lamar.

I'm not an English major, but disquieting sounds bad by my cursory glance. Why would this be bad? Potential roster exit?

Has two years of eligibility remaining too. Makes things look a tad bit better in 2024.

There's about a dozen reasons that will not, can not, and will never work. Starting with the fact that Texas is a right to work state. We can't even enforce a non-compete in this state, effectively. Now imagine the perception of suing a kid for transferring to place elsewhere for a bigger NIL deal, which makes you look like a shitheel to recruits. Just...no.

Yes, but probably not in the way you'd think.

the short answer is no, the long answer is you can tie someone up in an exclusive like Quinn Ewers is for autographs. You can also do brand exclusivity so lets say Sonic didn't want him doing other fast food during their engagement etc.

Next year it might not matter all that much, because of the 1-year penalty for portalling inside the SEC.

AD Mitchell, Catalon, Holmes, Trill, the punter. Pretty good portal haul thus far.

It was reported on last week or before that Trill's recruitment would be heavy in the NIL, and we weren't sure how interested we'd be in the kid. And we're not swimming in NIL money as it is, so reading between the lines has me somewhat concerned about our current roster.
