What’s the highest ranked team to not have to play in anything besides FA and PL, 8th? Isn’t that what Chelsea did, went from 8th to 1st? It does seem sometimes like there are some serious advantages to being left out of Champions/Europa.

You're a frontrunner. That's why you 'support' that team.

There’s still time to choose a different team.

1-4 are UCL.

5 is Europa

Europa spots also go to the FA Cup and EFL Cup winners - but those roll over to 6 and 7 if their winners qualify for Europe in some other way.

I only found two teams in the last few years that weren't playing in Europe when they won a title:
16-17 Chelsea (10th)
15-16 Leicester City (14th)

It's an advantage, but for teams with depth, it shouldn't be an issue.

The midfield wore down and the shaky defense was left out to dry. That was one of the worst defensive lineups that Poch has run out all season long.
When you have zero depth, you wear your team out, that's what happened with the midfield. Frankly, Spurs are tired, it's why they have injury problems now as well as games where they just wear down to not much.
Well tell poch to play the A team against city and rest against liverpool....and if they draw liverpool just bow out of champions league and rest up.for 4th place battle and try again next year

Revisiting this really fast, it's safe to say that Leicester City certainly took advantage of this. They weren't in either European competition. They were eliminated from the EFL cup in their 3rd game, just 10 games into the EPL season.  And they were eliminated in their first tie of the FA Cup in January. Their monthly game load was:

Aug - 5 (EFL)
Sept - 4 (EFL)
Oct - 5 (EFL)
Nov - 3
Dec - 5
Jan - 6 (FA)
Feb - 4
Mar - 4
Apr - 4
May - 3

It was noted that post January, they knew exactly what their game load for the rest of the year was and combined with the lighter schedule, that it basically allowed Ranieri to run out the same lineup for most of EPL season (it was mentioned near the end of the season that LCFC was able to utilize a very low number of different starting lineups in the EPL).

Is today's Arsenal-ManU match the first Sunday "noon" match NBC has put on the main station? They do it regularly for Saturday matches, but I can't recall a Sunday match, and I've felt they have missed out on opportunities to get good games on TV.

If we get a winner between manu/arsenal i think that would give winner about 85% to win 4th...draw would keep chelsea alive

Maybe not 85%....forgot chelsea is a game behind...more like 70%

Here are the final 8 for Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and ManU:

Spurs (61 - UCL) - Palace*, @Liverpool, Brighton, Huddersfield, @City, West Ham, @Bournmouth, Everton
Arsenal (60 - Europa) - @Wolves*, Newcastle, @Everton, @Watford, Palace, @Leicster, Brighton, @Burnley
ManU (58 - UCL, FA Cup) - Watford, @Wolves, West Ham, @Everton, City, Chelsea, @Huddersfield, Cardiff
Chelsea (57** - Europa) - @Everton, @Cardiff, West Ham, Liverpool, Burnley, @ManU, Watford, @Leicester

* - PPD games    ** - Game in Hand

FiveThirtyEight sees it pretty close right now. One advantage for both Spurs and Arsenal, the H2H of ManU and Chelsea, it could set one or both of them back.

Ill take my guess out of my ass being around 10% off of actual math

Win the UCL games, rest in the EPL game.

Unless its Poche: Burn legs against Liverpool, Huddersfield and Brighton, play dead legs against City.

Kind of a good way to not get CL next year considering how close Man U and Arsenal are.

As well, Chelsea just drew the easiest path to the Euro League Finals.

Three operators of a pirate streaming organisation which provided illegal access to Premier League games to more than 1,000 pubs, clubs and homes in England and Wales over the last decade have been jailed for a total of 17 years.

Steven King, who masterminded the fraud while trading under the names Dreambox, Dreambox TV Limited, and Digital Switchover Limited, was handed the biggest sentence of seven years and four months in jail. Paul Rolston was sentenced to six years and four months while Daniel Malone was given three years and three months by Warwick crown court after a four-week trial.

“The fraudulent companies earned in excess of £5m through their illegal activity,” said the Premier League in a statement.

The Premier League is eager to prevent illegal streaming to help protect the value of broadcast rights for media companies such as Sky and BT.

Premier League director of legal services Kevin Plumb said the sentences reflected the seriousness of the crime, he said: “Using these services is unlawful and fans should be aware that when they do so they enter into agreements with illegal businesses. They also risk being victims of fraud or identity theft by handing over personal data and financial details.”

Dumb question amnesty - does Euro League champ get an auto UCL bid for the next season?

Most likely yes, but due to the 5 team limit, there is a scenario where they get left out: UCL winner and Europa winner come from the same league but both fail to qualify the UCL the next year.

IE: the season ends today EPL top 4 are: City, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal.

If ManU wins the UCL, even if Chelsea won Europa, they wouldn't qualify for the UCL.

Actually, I think it's the opposite.  If the winners of EL and CL are from the same league and not in the top 4, then the fourth place team is dropped and Arsenal would be out.

This sounds like it's right. I can't imagine being 4th place in your league trumps a Euro win.

Again, this isn't happening because Man U is about to get housed in the next round.

Or maybe Spurs drop to 5th but win the CL

Yeah, I would put a lot of money on neither of those teams winning it.

Man City and Liverpool... not so much.

So this weekend NBC Sports is in Boston w/ their Fan Fest. It's going to be at the Cask n Flagon. I'll send a report back from the Sunday festivities.

That should be some drunken good times.

Huddersfield officially relegated today...fulham pretty much done

Cardiff has work to do but is most likely done also with the schedule they have left

Fulham is in that "no margin for error" spot. A loss will officially relegate them, with their GD a draw will just about do the same. They're done.

Cardiff had some rough games, but they also have some very winnable games mixed in, including two "six-pointers" so they have a chance. That log jam at 33 does help them.

And if they close this game out they are going to be in the mix to stay up.

Liverpool about to lose the EPL on a moving ball?

That goal was coming for most of the 2nd half.

WOW! The way the they got that 2 v1 was world class.

Holy shit!!! What a game!

God, I love this game. I feel sorry for people who don’t appreciate the sport.
