This isn't the first time in our history that Americans have desired fascism but that movement was ostracized during WWII and afterwards. Now it does seem it has made a come back which doesn't surprise me because I think a lot of humans are hardwired to authoritarian rule.

Anyways, I thought we could use a thread to discuss the movement occurring within the United States.

We can start with Idaho.

Foxx was especially worked up, posting a livestream in which he listed off his hopes for the wave of policies the decision could unleash. “They’re gonna ban sodomy!” he said. “They’re gonna ban gay marriage! They’re gonna throw gays off roofs! Women lose, God wins. Christ wins,” he said, smiling, before adding: “We shall have our theocracy soon.”

American Fascism: Guns, Jesus, and Stupidity

There is a five or six page thread on fascism that I started about a year ago but it fizzled out, partly due to Donkey derailing it halfway through, and partly due to so many events happening that could be cross posted in the GOP thread that I just gave up monitoring it. A combination of the frog in the pot on the stove effect, the consistent gaslighting nationwide, and the resignation that a percentage of the populace really doesn't seem to mind fascism/authoritarianism even if they cannot fathom the larger picture.

I've never read the series or seen Game of Thrones, but I am familiar with that phrase that became popular.  Winter is coming.

The 3 times I've directly brought up the issue of the Golden Rule to Trumpers I've gotten 1 "what's the Golden Rule?" response, and 2 "that's not in the Bible" responses.

Very few “Christians” know what’s in the Bible.

Also, Confucius taught the Golden Rule centuries before the alleged Jesus did (or whoever was writing for the fictional Jesus). Confucius probably wasn’t the first to come up with idea, either. It’s a natural conclusion if you want to have a civilized society.

Pretty much this.  I would hazard a guess that the majority of these people don't WANT fascism necessarily, but they are just too stupid to understand what's really happening.

Seditious, fat and stupid, is no way to go through life...unless you're a Republican, then it gets you elected.

Why it’s happening is pretty straight forward.

They want it because they think they’ll be in the tiny ruling authority. They’re okay with all of it as long as they’re the ones doling out the pain. It’s just a political party made of a bunch of incels that were too big of pussies to be the bully in high school.

The framers didn't account for the fragility of the modern conservative pussy. Or seemingly the entitlement and victimhood that would poison rural America.

But they did account for white men being the only ones in charge, seemingly for all time.

Therein lies the problem.

I don't think most advocate fascism but that it just lends itself to certain human tendencies. Many of the virtues of liberal democracy have been around a short period of time. Something like tolerance is a very difficult virtue to uphold for a lot of people. Not to mention many see it as "you can exist because the law allows it otherwise we would fuck you up." So the fix is just remove laws that protect certain liberties and tolerance is no longer required.

CPAC Europe Is being held today. It's not a conference celebrating natural rights, classical liberalism and western liberal democracy but the opposite.

CPAC Europe Is a Safe Space for Authoritarians — and the Republicans Who Love Them

Nationalist fuckery right here.

Quote

“The nation’s cause is not a question of ideology; not even of tradition,” Orban said. “You have to help and support the Church and support the families because they construct the nation. They make up the nation. This means that you will always have to stand on the side of the workers. This is why we decided to stop migration and to build a wall.”

Now an American Republican chimes in.

Quote

Matt Schlapp echoed Orban’s remarks, though he tied the replacement of (white) Western populations by migrants to abortion rights in the United States. The chairman of the American Conservative Union — CPAC’s parent organization — Schlapp was a long-time Republican operative who cut his teeth in the early George W. Bush years. Ending abortion, he argued, would “create more people.”

“For people that believe that we need to somehow replace populations or bring in new workers, I think it’s a nice and appropriate first step to enshrine in law the right to life for unborn children,” he said.

They want what they want and are unwilling to consider the means by which it is achieved.  My FIL, a Hungarian, loves Orban because he is vanquishing the last remnants of Communism, along with the whole Hungary first thing.  He is willfully ignorant of the means by which he retains power.

Hungarians come by their nationalism fairly honestly, ab initio.  i say that because they have been a territorial hockey puck for several centuries now after having been a fairly powerful sovereign state for a while, that basically halted the Mongol horde.  There are sizable populations of ethnic Hungarians and Hungarian speakers in former Hungarian territory in most countries in Central Europe due to the constantly shifting borders.  So it's a more long-standing and I guess "legitimate" grievance than, say, Russia's.

So, they like "Hungary First" type of stuff and preserving a Hungarian identity, but that almost immediately devolves into rank nationalism of the kind we're seeing everywhere.  And, of course, Orban is a dictator, but like Hitler and others, they don't care right now because he's delivering what they think they want.

The idea that an American political fundraising entity, a PAC, is holding conferences outside the United States is fucking revolting.  It's the fucking Comintern is what it is.

It's interesting that historically fascism was a reaction to the threat of communism in Europe and it was a legitimate threat at the time. Currently we hear a lot of similar slogans about Communists, Marxists, and Socialists but these threats no longer exist. Stalin isn't in power supporting communist revolutions in Europe.  There are no meaningful communist parties in the West. Outside of China, North Korea and Cuba communism doesn't exist and even those nations have no interest in exporting communism.

As my FIL lived under the Hungarian Communist regime and fled during the Revolution, I give him a bit of a break on the anti-Communist thing.  But it has turned into seeing a Red behind every door and curtain, including and especially for those who have about zero idea what Communism is or what living under it is like.

You'd be surprised how many people in Texas don't realize that we are a minority-majority state - they see figures like "whites are 79%" and don't realize that that figure includes Hispanics, and that Hispanics and whites are neck-and-neck.  But there are plenty of Republicans who are aware of it, and are concerned.

After they thoroughly trash the state of Texas they will migrate to Oklahoma and blame all of the Texas ills on the minorities.

It's really fucking pathetic that the people running Texas looked at Florida and Oklahoma and thought "Hey, we can act more shitty than either of those two states!"

Then again, we elected people who grew up outside of Texas, so of course this shit is to be expected, because they are trying to create some kind of version of Texas that mirrors what they think it is, rather than a state that should be working on leaving people alone.

Really embarrassing that Abbott is a UT grad.  I would expect this shit out of aggy Rick Perry.

The people running Texas are literally doing the exact same shit that the Russian leadership is doing when it comes to gays, etc.  Coincidence?  I think not.

On the other hand, *Four Seasons Total Landscaping raked in $1.3 million dollars in sales after the Trump campaign debacle. So there is that.

*per the Guardian, the company sold over 35,000 products and services as a result of the mishap.
