I doubt there is a perfect answer when you're constrained by budgets. Oh, there's a perfect answer, and it has nothing to do with budgets unless you're talking about campaign budgets. But yeah, it isn't about re-designing schools.

May 25, 20223 yr Popular Post Something I thought about today. Did you know you cant carry a personal firearm on a military base? I don't just mean Joe Q. Public, I mean errbody. This isn't a general policy for the logistics clerks on Fort Hood, I mean this extends to our most highly trained Delta operators on bases like Bragg. Even if you live on base in housing or the barracks. You cant even store weapons in your living quarters. For those that aren't tracking, I'm not talking about an AR, I mean pistol, shotgun, etc. You have to register all weapons with the MPs, and then have those weapons stored with your unit armorer if you live on base. To use a shooting range on base, you have to again, register the weapon with the MPs, carry that weapon in locked storage in your trunk, and go to the range, finish your shooting, and then get the fuck back off base (or return it to the armorer for those that live on base). You don't get to drive to burger king and grab a bite with a weapon in your vehicle. I wont even get into all the hoops you have to jump through to access actual military weapons. The most highly trained people we have in the use of weapons aren't trusted to store a pistol in their house, or carry one in their vehicle while on a military installation. Doesn't matter if they are an 18 year old private or a 40 year old highly decorated green beret. I would assume its very similar for police stations wrt to the carrying of firearms in the building. Its beyond odd that our most trained weapon users have stronger gun control policies than the public.

May 25, 20223 yr that picture of jailah silguero haunts me. all of them do but i cannot help but lose complete control looking at that picture. there can genuinely be no justice in the world in which these children had to endure that terror...that the last day of their lives are over and the beauty throughout them all and every one of those pictures has been extinguished. that suffering and fear that they undoubtedly felt.
May 25, 20223 yr Beautiful kids, all those pictures capture the joy and happiness of that age. the smiles and pride of their uniforms !!!! The happiness of making the honor roll !!! To me, it's stupid that you keep twisting it that way, but this is an emotionally charged topic and you're apparently looking for a pound of flesh, so I guess I understand. Can we agree that most of those who become educators don't do so for financial enrichment? Something else draws them to the occupation. Most teachers I know as an adult (and knew as a youth) are selfless, patient types who make tremendous personal sacrifices for the greater good. They're some of the most idealistic, altruistic people I know. Would you agree with those sentiments? If so, do you still feel that sort of person would be the norm for the profession if the base pay were, say, $100K/year? In other words, teachers' pay may be shitty, but their motivations are not. That's a good thing, in my view. It's unfortunate you feel otherwise.

If teacher base pay were $100k, it would IMPROVE the quality of teaching/teachers. I'm sure there are scores of people who would make excellent teachers that can't do it for financial reasons. You'd increase the pool of candidates and schools could be more selective of who they hire/fire based on that instead of now where they are forced to take anyone that received their teaching certificate and can fog a mirror. That's a good thing, in my view. It's unfortunate you feel otherwise. My wife's a counselor and was a special ed teacher, so I'm acutely aware of their their dedication, motivation, the challenges they face, etc. I understand you think you were praising teachers. And yes, it is a good thing that teachers are motivated despite their low pay. we collectively "value" their dedication to a job that pays little with almost zero opportunity for meaningful salary increase over the course of a career. You see that as some sort of altruistic sacrifice they are making for the greater good. But teachers don't want your gratitude. They want to be "valued" not with your words and target gift cards during teacher appreciation week, but with resources necessary to do their job. Relative to this thread that means more security guards/cops at school, and tighter security restrictions. It also means not having to teach in portable classrooms. It means fewer students per class. It means not having to pay for school supplies out of their own pockets. It means dedicated TAs to help with classroom instruction and grading papers, which they have to do after hours at home at night after already working a 10 hour day. It means not protesting and/or threatening them if they're teaching the sometimes uncomfortable history of our country, or if they acknowledge and accept the sexuality or gender preferences of their students. They want the tools they need to do their job. And we don't equip them with that. And for too long we've taken for granted that "idealistic, altruistic" people will take these essential jobs and teach our kids for us. But I'm not sure how much longer we can expect that. There are currently 573 open teacher positions in AISD alone. And a very large percentage of those aren't going to get filled for the next school year. And it's because we don't pay them enough for them to have to deal with the shit I outlined in the previous paragraph. You ask if I still think qualified and dedicated candidates would want to become teachers if the pay was $100k/year? FUCK YES I do! The more you increase compensation, the higher likelihood you will attract a larger number of more qualified candidates. It's fucking basic economics! If we paid teachers $100k per year, you could count the number of teacher openings on two hands. And maybe then teachers could afford to live in the same city as they kids they teach. I know you aren't bagging on teachers. But we have to stop appreciating teachers with our words and start doing it with $$$. It's just more "thoughts and prayers". Sorry for the rant and to derail a thread that's about dead kids. That's all I'll say on the subject.

I am praising teachers, even if you feel I'm not simply because I don't fly into a condescending rage when someone mentions how underpaid they are. Nowhere have I said I don't feel they deserve more pay, or that I'd be opposed to across-the-board pay raises for educators. I'm behind all of that ... but I will disagree with you and @Hmbre97 that the quality of teachers would be improved if base pay were, say, doubled. Anyway, one thing we can agree on is that we've derailed this enough, so my apologies for contributing.
