Mechanic promises next week. I’ve hardly boated in the last few years. I mean I’ve been to the boat a lot, but trips have been hard to come by. I really want to change that next year. Otherwise what am I doing with this thing other than piss money into it? I feel your pain right now. Just got really bad news and now it looks like I need to replace one engine. To do that is a major job - they have to cut into the decking in the salon and basically remove the back window/wall too. The cost of doing that makes it to where I might as well replace both engines while I’m at it. Going to lose about 2 months of the fishing season too. Fuck. It’s a little unclear what caused the initial problem. I figured I’d get at least 5 more years out of the current engines. Some combination of bad luck, mechanic error changing the cooling pump a few months ago and not changing the oil when he did it, and someone running the boat and not noticing the oil pressure dropping. So here we are with metal (n the port engine.

But this really had nothing to do with the engine. It was a mistake made by somebody. We will not be using the same mechanic again and I’ve demoted the captain that was running the boat back down to first mate. No way to tell for sure who was at fault and it was likely a combination of both. I also share some of the blame for promoting a guy to captain who really wasn’t quite ready for the job. Tough and very expensive lesson to learn.

While muff diving, I noticed a tampon string hanging out of her twat. Luckily, the reality of what was about to happen sobered me up like a bucket of cold water. Sorry for the interruption, please carry on. Edited November 1, 20241 yr by Armybrat

December 24, 20241 yr Merry Xmas to me. One old engine was removed yesterday. The other engine should be out by end of day. Mechanic is taking tomorrow off then installing the new engines that are sitting in a box in the boatyard ready to go. After that it’s just a matter of hooking everything back up and then reinstalling the deck and back window that was cut out. That project starts on the 2nd and should take 3 weeks.

Yes and thankfully I am in Texas right now and not there to see it in person. I’ll go down a few days before they finish and the boat should look as good as it ever did by then. Actually better looking because while we have it in the yard we are doing some paint touch up work and installing an a/c unit for the cockpit. 11 hours ago, Horns99 said: Is that less expensive to have done down there in CR vs here? It’s probably a wash. Mechanic price is the same, boatyard labor is cheaper but we had to pay a small fortune in shipping and taxes ro get the engines down to CR.
January 19Jan 19 Damn got down here for the first time since early December. A combination of wind, fires and just pure neglect left her as filthy as I may have ever seen her. Scrubbed her up as best I could. Can't let that happen again.

January 20Jan 20 anybody got a good online source for hardware? I'm helping a guy with an old Boston whaler, and the bow eye is loose. We got it apart and the shaft is fucked. I need a 10"x1/2" threaded shaft and can't find one anywhere

MCMaster ProTip: if you’re sourcing parts from McMaster and can’t get enough info from their generic data sheets, hit up the support webpage and ask them for the actual manufacturer and manufacturer part number. They’ll reply with that info within a couple of hours in my experience. My predecessors at work liked to source parts from McMaster and I’m contacting them every week or so to get an actual manufacturer to get a real data sheet.
February 3Feb 3 Hit up the Houston Boat and Auto Show this weekend. Really like the juxtaposition of the 12’ sailboat and quad 350 powered 47’ Freeman Cat.

February 8Feb 8 Cruised past this outside the Cabo marina yesterday evening. We were told it’s one of Bezos’ 5. The helicopter seems a little small for my tastes. But otherwise seems like a decent enough ride.

February 10Feb 10 And I would add I’m getting to that age where I’m wanting the “old man” boat (cabin cruiser) or the sailing yacht. Not the surf boat anymore. Unfortunately our neighborhood marina doesn’t have the slip for anything other than a 20-25 ft bow rider. Edited February 10Feb 10 by troph

They make some pretty sick options these days. If I could get two slips I would have one of those and the wake boat.

I just joined a start up boutique investment bank as their GC (part time, large deals, very nice stable of companies we are marketing, stoked about the opportunity actually), and we need to land a few fees but then I'm going to tell the CEO who loves boats and has connections out here even though they moved downtown recently to buy an "old man" boat for the company. we will be taking it out sometimes but partying on the dock regularly if that happens. February 27Feb 27 Have boat prices finally started to fall or is Premier Boating Centers in trouble? Or maybe they just added the MSRP to the listings and struck through it to make it seem like a deal? I've been looking for a smaller skiff for the last few months and noticed today that these guys slashed prices in the last few days. They have a location near me in Lufkin so I haven't really poked around anywhere else besides boattrader and FB marketplace. Private sellers are now asking for more on a 3-4 year old boat than you can buy a brand new one for in some cases. I want something smaller and more reliable than the old beater 20 ft '96 Pro Craft that I have. It's got a 225 that still runs strong but I've got 15 and 12 year old sons that I want to be able to go out and fish on their own, and that's just way too much boat. Something like this little Mako would be perfect: https://www.premierboatingcenters.com/center-console/swoof/pwb-brand-mako/
