He's one of us, a regular contributor, and he also happens to be an old, old friend of mine. He is presently in the hospital with myriad health issues -- he is in the ICU, etc.  I don't have all

He's apparently taken a turn for the worse and is in very critical condition.  Dang .. I spoke with him at length about two months ago and he posted on FB on April 15. Fuck.

Shit, this is awful to hear.  He has helped me with some of my shit in the last year and I know he was in an even tougher spot.  Fuck.

Don't doxx him, but if somebody knows how to reach him...please let me know.

Damn....wtf. I thought he was back posting....will bang a convict in his honor.

Sigh. Shit.

And I owe him a call.

The man has to want to get better. And I just don’t know if he does.

Yeah, he was posting here not too long ago.  I hate to hear this.

Maybe he finally opened my dick pic?

I pray he gets through this and wants to get better.

Does either of y'all know how he's doing?

I have not heard anything since my last post. I'm taking that as possibly hopeful.

Without getting overly personal, where does he live here in Texas?  God bless him, hope he's doing better.

Houston area. I’ve got a query out to those close to him.

I’ll see if that’s happening (visitors). I got details yesterday. It’s really bad.

Unfortunately, the most recent report is bad. He is receiving hospice care in the ICU and will not recover. He's leaving two children, so please keep them and his family in your prayers.

Goddamn it.  He was a great poster and came off like a genuine good dude.  I've seen him allude to his issues in some other threads.  Fucking sad as hell, but sometimes you just can't outrun that shit.

As we're at the end of things, I'll share the most recent update.  I visited with his ex this weekend, and she gave me the details and expected outcome then.  I've watched plenty of folks wrestle with the addiction demon.  I've seen a lot of them lose that match.  I don't get it.  It breaks my heart.  But there it is.

John Nova is in his last days with liver and kidney failure, an infection, bleeding ulcers and lesser issues, all of which came to a head today (Monday 5.8). He is being kept alive by meds and machines and now has the decision as to when to cut them off. The doctors have done all they can do and he will now be getting hospice care in the ICU as there is no point in moving him. St. Luke's staff has tried everything medically possible but too many things have gone wrong to bring him back. He will make the decision about when to ask them to turn off the machines and stop the meds that are keeping him alive now. This is so very, very sad and I thank all of you who have worked with us to provide funds for his recovery. We are making plans for a book of his writing and a Celebration of his Life down the trail. We are planning to distribute any remaining funds after funeral expenses and medical bills to his children, John Henry and Harriet Rose. If you have any questions, please get in touch 615 [phone redacted]. Best regards, John Lomax III.

I wish it wasn't this way.  Part of me will keep wishing for some sort of miracle that surely won't come.  This universe is a heartbreaking bitch.

Also, mods....if you can go ahead and move this post to the DT forum, I think it's appropriate now.

Fucking fuck!  I didn't know  him IRL.  But we exchanged messages and he was of great help/inspiration to me, and a funny and smart cat with a lot of life lessons and experience in so many things.  Shit.  Just shit.  It's all shit.  But he was a light.

I loved his stories about Townes Van Zandt.

I guess that's kind of ironic in hindsight.

Truly heartbreaking. Like Lobo, I'd never met him in person but we'd also exchanged messages over the last decade, and I'd been following him on FB for a few years. He was a really great writer and told some fascinating stories about his dad, his town, and his life. I think I'm going to cry now.

Instead on dwelling on his end, feel free to take a look at the legacy he made.  Books on Amazon, articles in Houston publications, and articles in many other places, including 244 Texas Monthly articles.

Something with 'brown' in the username, I think.

Oh my god, I met him at the Texas Book Festival.  Likely at our author breakfasts at Texas Monthly HQ.  Holy shit.

What a fucking small world.  And it's a little worse off today.

This sucks.

Sorry to all of his friends of family on here.  Although it may not make a difference through out some “ju-ju” into the universe.

I count myself among the lucky ones who got to meet him. He was doing a backroads tour between Texas and Nashville, making side-trips to capture any Pokemon Go critter he found, while no doubt spinning up future travel articles of whatever oddities he spotted.

He got into Birmingham about 15 minutes before most of the restaurants closed, as I took him on a loop all over town searching for chow. We ended up at the bar of a real Mexican place not 5 minutes from my house drinking Co-Colas and eating whatever they were still making. Which was everything, they didn't care about closing time.

While staying at the house, John would dodge out and catch more Pokemon critters. He was like a cat seeing a mouse. He exercised more than I did.

During that time we went down to Old Selma and stayed with my mom. They hit it off better than anybody I've ever seen, and she would have signed adoption papers for him without even reading them.

He always said he was convinced we had to be cousins. I call him my brother.

Very cool. Didn't know he was a writer. Also figured he was an older guy (unfortunately).

RIP.

So TJ really wasn’t TPE.

So much history in this community and we lose a little of it, bit by bit, every year. As he goes, so goes a piece of the HornFans/Shaggy/Surly lore.

It's come to me now. His username on the old site was sweetjones.

Damn.  Seemed like a really good dude.   I never met him in real life, but I enjoyed his writing over the years and enjoyed his posts here.   Here's to going out with as much grace and dignity as possible.

Very sad news indeed.  A solid, opinionated surlyite.  May the end come peacefully.

I just knew him as a contributor here, and he was a good one that got more than his share of my rep.  Peace and condolences to him, his family and friends.

Well fuck me. Earlier today I found out the Grendal/PO1D died in March and now MAC is terminal. Two wildly different posters who brought a helluva lot of entertainment to the boards over the years. Bummer. Addiction's a bitch.
