I’m cool with religious curriculum-  with a twist- do different religions each 6-weeks and that doesn’t mean Baptist- Church of Christ- Methodist for half of the year.  Go around the world, so to speak.

Horrifying to some, I know.

If kids opt out, let them do deeper language arts or others mediums of inspiration/ introspection.

First question I’m asking in 3 years, how many districts have actually implemented this. My guess is it will be less than 20 and they’ll all be small ass 2A and 1A districts

My guess is many more will adopt it.  Let's take Houston ISD... 189K students at $40/student per year + $20/student additional "printing" costs related to it.... so $60/student/year

= $11,340,000  in extra money.  For districts scrapping for every penny I think it will be hard to not consider it.

Question for the lawyers—is it legal to only say “bible infused curriculum” or because of religious liberty/freedom can a group come in and say we need to start offing Quran infused curriculum or Book of Mormon infused curriculum?

I teach elementary near Austin. Not sure how my district will react but I’ve got a ton of Old Testament bullshit to teach that will be a great form of protest!

I was surprised, but Dripping decided not to implement this.  They stated that " they would not be considering the adoption of any kind of state level curriculum, especially if funding is tied to it."

My understanding is that the whole board feels strongly about local control....which knowing who is on the board is also scary.

If they can’t grift enough money from the religious education materials, they’ll tie receiving any state funding to it.

We have that already in curriculum. It is called "History".   As a kid, I learned how people worshipped a cow. And as a 10 year old kid, I realized how idiotic religious people are. Religion has no place in education unless it is a brief history lesson.

Evangelical Churches have started to sing Like a Prayer in services. Having these folks who think a song about fellatio is appropriate for a Sunday service being in charge of education curriculum is absolutely on point for how fucking idiotic this country has become.

This I think is just a chorus (not a church). The one I posted is a church. And there about 10 different ones out there. Jimmy Fallon asked Madonna about it. lol.

Nah, there's still hope...

SIAP. The Chronicle has a depressing piece on the right wing assault on UT

I’ve already told our youngest to not even apply to Texas (despite having the grades and scores to walk into any degree program on campus). And I know a ton of orange-blooded alums making the same decision, opting to pay higher tuition to send their kids elsewhere.

It’s all very sad.

I started reading and had to stop. Too depressing.

Jesus. His response to "do you believe in intellectual diversity and freedom of thought?"

Rufo stiffened. The muscles in his face froze. He spoke and his words came fast, pitched a half-step higher. He said it would have been better if Dewey had never been born. He said that adhering to Dewey’s values creates “an academic life that drifts into witchcraft, into phrenology, into gender studies.” He said academics like Strong who believe in Dewey, “frankly, deserve what’s coming.”

Perhaps Rufo imagined he was being discreet by leaving “what’s coming” vague. But professors paying attention to Texas politics know exactly what it means. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has, over the last four years, called for the elimination of tenure, for restricting students’ free speech, and for mandating what professors can teach. Patrick has also pushed for the elimination of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs at Texas’ public universities. And, in the case of these programs, “what’s coming” is already here. Texas outlawed DEI in January.

The attacks against higher education have hurt faculty morale. There is anecdotal evidence that they are beginning to damage UT’s ability to attract high-quality professors. An August survey of 950 Texas faculty conducted by the AAUP revealed that two-thirds would not recommend Texas universities to their out-of-state colleagues. More than a quarter plan to interview for jobs elsewhere this year. A similar number have already done so. Half said they have noticed fewer, and less qualified, applicants for open positions. The top reason cited by those looking to leave is the state’s political climate. Anxieties about academic freedom, DEI attacks, access to reproductive care, LGBTQ+ issues, and tenure also made the list.

Destroy all education, create more ignorant drones that don’t know or don’t care about how they are getting fleeced.

Destroy the government. Confuse the ignorant with words they don’t understand and tell them about a fictitious history that existed before your selected enemy wrecked it. Truth wont matter, those ignorant wont care anyway.

Godfuckingdammit.  Back when I was waiting tables, two old ladies who praised my service throughout the meal left me a "tip" - it was a folded up piece of paper that said "your tip is the good news that Jesus is your lord and savior."  I ran out in the parking lot yelling "JESUS DOESN'T PAY MY FUCKING RENT!"

Are "Christians" the fucking worst humans on earth?  Yes.  Yes they are.

I left a laughing emoji only because it is common knowledge that Christians are the worst tippers. Thank God I work in tourist areas and can avoid those Sunday after service crowds.

I'm all for putting the 10 Commandments in every classroom, as long as there's a discussion about what those 10 Commandments say about that "God."

In no way should Lewisville ISD be closing 5 elementary schools.

When you have 1 district working in the red, it means you have 1 district that's run poorly. When you have dozens of districts working in the red, it means you have a state that's run poorly.

Why do you say that? Looking looks like enrollment down, schools below 40% capacity. Student/teacher ration of like 13/1, little land in district for new homes ?

From the dallas morning news:

The harsh reality is that North Texas school districts need to adapt to lower enrollments, a trend that is here to stay. Lewisville ISD projects enrollment to settle at about 45,000 students over the next decade, down from a peak of 53,000, this newspaper reported.

They could probably adapt better if a certain wheelchair bound governor wasn't holding the entire public school system hostage with needed budget funds while he tries for (a third time?) to ram through public funding of private schools.

I agree wholeheartedly. But that said, if falling birthcounts and populations are truly impacting enrollments (and project to be in the near future), why not rationalize some of the schools and pool resources, teachers, and students together to optimize or "load balance" if you will? That is what it sounds like is happening in Lewisville which would make sense as it is not a destination for young families or folks looking to raise families for the most part.

Y’all know what attracts families with young children. Of course y’all do.

Excellent schools.

Haven’t really kept up with this thread but how is “universal school choice” different from vouchers?

I know the conservative Dems backing Republican Dustin Burrows for Tx House Speaker are all for it so is this shifting money to charter schools instead of going full voucher? Does anyone know? I haven’t heard much about this lately.

Flower mound schools are part of Lewisville isd and are quite strong public education. Throw on Hebron as well and folks absolutely are moving to the district for schools. Lewisville hs and the colony are not exactly destinations tho.
