Holy shit, the obscure Little River Band reference!  Always loved that band.  I'm not sure I've ever heard that tune.  Very CSN.

This is the first song I thought of.

And of course, Kashmir with that hypnotic riff circling back on itself over and over, driving that song.

This is the only instrumental banned from the radio. It is the way marker of where Rock & Roll went so it counts as THE guitar driven sound. Without this, you get none of the above.

Those fuckers stole a buddy's Les Paul in 1981 from a bar in Amarillo.  Still a great song.

I started reading this thread wondering when the ZZ songs were gonna pop up. Got Me Under Pressure is another that came to mind.

LOL.
Every time I hear "Tush" I think "that's my favorite ZZ Top tune".
Then I hear "La Grange" and I think "that's my favorite ZZ Top tune".

It's an impossible puzzle to solve.

For me the “guitar driven” criteria for ZZ Top is most solidly met with this one. But like you said [emoji2369]

by today's standards that sounds like it was recorded by a high school garage band. still a good song, though.

This is a public service announcement.

With guitar!

Spoiler

Not a serious contender.

I'll let Roger Fisher steer a guitar driven song.

I'm mean he ripped of "Achilles Last Stand", but I'll allow it.

And before she packed on the pounds, Ann was the hotter sister..

By today's standards, a computer would be playing the guitar parts.

Well, that's a bit of a stretch.  The Zep part you're referencing is the bass line, and beyond that, Heart released "Barracuda" merely one year after "Achilles Last Stand".  Could there have been some influence?  Sure.  Did Heart write a far better song?  Yep.

Nancy Wilson says they stole the riff from Nazareth when they covered some Joni Mitchell song called "This Flight Tonight".

That was from their first album in the mid 70s.  I always loved this song from that record.  Not guitar driven but cool vocal harmonies.   My first high school band I was in used to play this song.

That song fucks.

Unless I missed it, I can't believe this guy hasn't been mentioned.  Foxy Lady is another one.

Shit not The Rover. Custard Pie. That Satch song sounds too much like Custard Pie.

How about a song driven by the bass guitar? Johnny Marr's greatness combined with a relentless bass🔥...

Speaking of Johnny Marr greatness...

Not even close. A couple of notes on one small section but the melody isn't even close to the same. By that rationale every rock song from the 80s on sounds like a rock song from the 50s to 70s. And almost every one of those sounds like a blues song that came before it.

Besides, The Rover is a mediocre at best Zeppelin song. Satch's is a guitar masterpiece of wah and legato.

Had forgotten how good this was, now it's stuck in my head.

Simple riff, carries the song all the way through ...
