Any of you guys watching this? I just flipped on France-Italy and France is thrashing them 4-0. There is some good looking soccer here too (plus Italy is in the game). The 3rd goal by France was thing of beauty.

I tried to watch it. A friend in Spain referenced it on WhatsApp and so I was looking on my tablet and found…

…and thought “How British of them.”

Then I tapped it to watch and saw…

Winner of this tournament will carry a ton of momentum into the 2023 World Cup.  Big game for England today against Norway.  The English media was predictably hyping the English as favorites going into the tournament but they looked miles off of Germany and France in the first round.

Not quite as high quality of play in the Austria-Northern Ireland game. Frankly, these two teams suck.

Just got back in and 2-0 England 20' in? Wow.

Going back to see the goals - thought the PK was soft, would not have given it due to the dive "embellishment." The hook was a foul, but I didn't think it was enough, and that dive made it look like simulation.

It's good to see VAR get the 2nd goal right.

And that injury to England #3 - OUCH!

Dare I say that looked like the captain of the men's team on that 3rd goal?

Noway is doing themselves no favors making mistakes on the backline (PK, and 2 bad turnovers that lead to goals).

That said, England is skinning them alive right now and making it look easy. They are punishing Norway for the mistakes.

The 2023 WWC could have some extremely ugly results in the group stage as the tournament expands from 24 to 32 teams.

We already get some of those, but yeah, I think with an expanded field, it will be far worse.

Yeah.  I expect that you can fill in the 16 teams in the knockout round immediately after the groups are announced.

England certainly made a statement today. And they've locked up Group A already defeating Austria and Norway (they have that tiebreaker against each of them).

By winning A, they are going to avoid France and Germany (likely). They just might have an easy route to the final.

Yep, fun tournament, but parity is a bit off. Norway was outclassed at every level today.

Spain-Germany today should be good.  It's too bad that Putellas went out two days before the tournament started.

Just turned on the TV to a goal by Denmark.

Danish girls . . . 🥰

They don’t always age so well (Finns age even worse), but in their youth…

A demolition derby breaks out on every German corner kick

A friend who’s watching in Spain said that one of the Spanish announcers described a German girl as being…

muy aleman

😂

…yep, many of them are that.

That was absolutely a red card. The ol’ “grab your opponent’s tit and hold on” move.

And nice tits on the flag-raising side judge.

I was expecting much more efficient ball movement from Spain. I think that the panelists were as well.

This article about England’s team was written a week ago and talks about their possibility of winning the tournament. A lot of credit goes to their new coach.

That part in the green box was BEFORE their 8-0 drubbing of Norway 🇳🇴.

That means that they have outscored their opponents in their last 15 matches by a count of…

92 to 3

If you’re keeping score, that’s pretty good.

Sweeden is going to kick themselves if they don't win this game. But they are up 2-1 with about 10 and stoppage to play. Their 2nd goal is a thing of beauty.

  • Author

The Netherlands up 2-0 today and looking solid. van der Gragt who scored their 2nd took a kick to the face in scoring the goal.

In the 2nd go around we are starting to see the top teams start to rise up. I think this is going to be fun in the KO stages.

  • Author

Portugal ties this up, and the Netherlands gets a 3rd, but it's going to VAR and I think it should be overturned.

  • Author

If this is taking this long, the decision should already be made.

This Group C is tough. Portugal is playing these guys hard and between them, Sweden and the Netherlands, one is getting KO'd next match day. Even Switzerland gave Sweden fits today.

Spain and England scoreless at halftime in the first QF.  England had a goal disallowed for offsides but Spain has had more possession and a 6-1 edge in shots.

I’m rooting for Spain. I love their style of soccer.

After Spain’s last group stage game, the TV analysts were sure that England was going to stomp Spain. They couldn’t really elaborate any reasons for it and frankly one of them sounded like she had brain damage.

  • Author

A defensive mistake at the edge of the box gave Spain tons of room to move and got the English defense scrambling.

  • Author

England is in trouble. Spain is very much controlling the game. And England looks toothless once they get on the attack. Spain on the other hand is very dangerous.

  • Author

And right when I say that, they FINALLY get an attack that finds the net.

Pretty much exactly how they scored the one that got (rightfully) disallowed.

She cocked that one back and banged on em.

Good game.  Spain looked like the better team for most of it.  I wish I was in Brighton to console some of the senoritas.

Spain was easily the better looking team. And their soccer was better too.

Germany-Austria today. I'm sure there is some tasteless WW2 joke in here somewhere.

This COULD be a good one today. England had trouble with this Austrian squad in the opening round only winning 1-0.

Still I think Germany works them, I'm predicting 4-0.

  • Author

Oof, terrible ball by the Austrian keeper gives the ball right back to Germany and they get the counter moving quick. 1-0 Germany.

  • Author

Austria is giving Germany fits. They've been unfortunate in the game too as they've had 3 come off the woodwork (2 posts and a crossbar) when they likely should have scored at least one of them.

  • Author

Geez, Austria's been trying to play out of the back the whole game and been under pressure a lot. And Germany made them pay on one of them finally. Deflecting a long ball from the keeper and it went in.

I was pulling for Austria (who according to the announcers both shares a border with Germany and “has some shared history…” 👀), but Germany was just so German. Made that Austrian keeper pay for two mistakes.
