May 5May 5 Speaking of history and trivia. It was very early spring 1984 or 1985 when I was listening to KLBJ 590 AM sports talk one evening. I was a student at Southwest Texas State University, and the trivia question came over the air. I immediately knew the answer. The question: Who held the longhorn baseball record for RBI in one season. The answer, of course, was Jamie Doughty. I got lucky and was the first person to call in with the correct answer. The prize? Free roundtrip taxicab from wherever you were to Disch-Falk field and two tickets. My roommate and I went. The cabbie acted like it was no big deal to drive from San Marcos to Austin and back. Btw, the most interesting part of the trivia was that Jamie did not bat third, fourth, or fifth. My memory is that he batted ninth! Amazing, yes!

May 15May 15 This isn’t some badass question, but since it came up in the Pete shit… Active leader in AB/PA?
May 15May 15 My first thought is Freeman, but it is probably not that easy edit....yep looked it up and this is incorrect. Edited May 15May 15 by Scraps
May 15May 15 Author Cutch is also the active leader in Outs Made, but he's over 4,000 behind The Out King.

May 23May 23 Not sure where to put this, so I'll put it here. Thought this was an interesting article on the "kangaroo courts" Frank Robinson and Don Baylor used to run. In today's game, I think they still exist but not to the extent they once did. https://tht.fangraphs.com/the-kangaroo-court-and-frank-robinson/
May 27May 27 Author OK, this one is pretty amazing... Definition first: "Career Triple Crown" = won batting title, HR title, and RBI title sometime in their career (but not in the same year, so we're not talking about Yaz, Miggy, Williams, etc.). Quote There are only ten players in MLB history who have won a Career Triple Crown without winning a season Triple Crown. Who are they? Here's the list of season Triple Crown winners so that you can know who's eliminated: https://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/triple_crowns.shtml Hint: Spoiler Five are in the HoF, five are not (yet?) Example: Here's Babe Ruth (probably the easiest of the ten): That's a HR title in 1918, an RBI title in 1919, and a batting title in 1924 for his Career Triple Crown, and he never led in all three in the same season. (This does leave out Negro Leagues, so do not count Turkey Stearns.) Edited May 27May 27 by Beau Vine

May 27May 27 Author Whoops, there's another that forgot to count because I think of him as a HoFamer even though he's not in yet. The three guesses so far are correct... Bonds: Pujols: Arod:

May 27May 27 there is a quirky one that involves a HOF that would be related to this question. so we have one HOF left? Hall of Famers: Ruth, Speaker, Dimaggio, Mize, 1 more? non-HOF: Bonds, ARod, Pujols, Manny, Andres fucking Galarraga

May 27May 27 So Eddie Murrray led the league in 1981 in HR and RBI. In 1990, Murray, playing for Dodgers, hit .330 which was the highest avg for MLB for the season. Willie McGee hit .335 for the Cardinals but was traded to AL after he had enough PA's to qualify for the batting title. McGee ended up hitting .324 for the entire season but won the NL batting title.
May 27May 27 Author So... Aaron, Ruth, Dimaggio, Mize, and Speaker Pujols, Manny, Bonds, Arod, and Galarraga

May 27May 27 in looking at these stats I wondered if any one of them plus the triple crown guys have done this... led league 1 season in all the traditional "offensive" categories(took out SB because it leaves no one) R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, BB, Avg,OBP,Slug 2 players in the history of baseball - Gehrig and Hornsby. Cobb didn't have walks(he had the SB's though and had one year of 118 BB where Eddie Collins had 119). everyone else had at least 2 categories missed that I could tell. check the 1920-1925 run for Hornsby. there are 2 seasons later where he leads in BB. so he led the league twice in each of these categories during his career. fucking mind bottling.

May 28May 28 Speaking of Tris Speaker and death by maritime misadventure. Spoiler Speaker died of a heart attack on December 8, 1958, at the age of 70, at Lake Whitney, Texas. He collapsed as he and a friend were pulling their boat into the dock after a fishing trip. It was his second heart attack in four years.[68] Speaker was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Hubbard, Texas.[69] After Speaker's death, Cobb said, "Terribly depressed. I never let him know how much I admired him when we were playing against each other... It was only after we finally became teammates and then retired that I could tell Tris Speaker of the underlying respect I had for him." Lajoie said, "He was one of the greatest fellows I ever knew, both as a baseball player and as a gentleman."[70] Former Boston teammate Duffy Lewis said, "He was a team player. As great a hitter as he was, he wasn't looking out for his own average ... Speaker was the bell cow of our outfield. Harry Hooper and I would watch him and know how to play the hitters."[71] Hits close to home, my grandparents had a place on Lake Whitney we used to go to as a kid.
