imaging of the galactic cluster is from approximately 4.6 billion years ago.  slightly older than the age of our lovely home planet and about the time armybrat was born.

It turns out deep space is still really into disco.

With this being an IR telescope, how do they translate that into a visible "color" image? And why do some objects have giant diffraction spikes? I thought that was an optical phenomenon.

 

Meh, saw that the last time I did shrooms. 

Close your eyes and rub them with your hands for a few seconds and that image will appear.

to the second, the objects that are showing spikes are stats that are insanely closer to the telescope than most of the image. That is a lot to do with it.

Due to distance variance of objects in the image. 

This will help study objects out in the outer reaches of the observable universe. Since the space between is expanding faster than the speed of light the observable universe is constantly shrinking for us and we'll never have any way to know what's outside of it.

I’m not a camera guy.  It is an eye-opening experience to see how much you can pay for a single camera lens when planning a safari.  I didn’t feel the need to get a closeup of the lion’s nose hair for more than the entire trip cost.

1. It took Hubble weeks to generate that image; this one took mere hours.

2. This one is much more detailed than Hubble's.

So the first thing they did after building this thing for 30 years and flying it 750k miles into space is take the same picture their last camera took, just to see if it was better?
