Over time if they can isolate some rocky worlds and catch them with elevated levels of stuff like oxygen and nitrogen it really points to high probabilities of life. Get lucky and catch signatures of fluorocarbon and we're staring at intelligence.

The first thing I would be doing if I was in charge of this giant reverse space laser is trying to see what kind of information I could gather on the planets orbiting our nearest stars. an image of our neighboring stars will not be terribly exciting...even with jwst. it won't look terribly different than the hubble image below. they will just look like super bright dots. from an "imaging" perspective, the exciting use of jwst is looking deeper and deeper into space/time, not so much the local area. however, the extreme jump forward in the sensitivity of the measurement tools is going to give us a ton of more scientific insight into what's going on next door. for example, there are tons of observations on the proxima centauri a, b, c, and d exoplanets but we still know very little about what's actually going on there. researchers have theorized that proxima b has potential for an earth like planet in a habitable zone orbit that could have water. but proxima centauri is a tiny star (even relative to our sun - it's a red dwarf) and has a ton of intense flares so we have no idea if b has an atmosphere that has been blown to shreds by intense electromagnetic flares. b is 5% as far away from the proxima centauri star as we are from the sun but given the relative weakness of the star, it might be earth like...despite likely being in tidal lock. if it has water, we have no idea beyond just theories based on previous observation and measurement. that is going to change with jwst. once the AC/PC researchers get their crack at some jswt time, we are going to learn everything we want to know about those four exoplanets around PC. the imagery is certainly sexier and more effective at capturing the imagination of the public...but when they point jwst at the AC system, it won't be for imagery. it will be for so much more.

July 16, 20223 yr A test of Webb's tracking systems yielded this image of Jupiter: Per a NASA presser, the image was taken during the testing buildup prior to last Tuesday's image releases. Webb utilized its NIRCam (near-infrared?) instrument's short-wavelength filter to highlight the planet's bands and Great Red Spot. Higher res version here: Spoiler
