Breaking this out from the Apple+ thread because it’s fantastic and more people need to watch it. True story of a 90s serial killer with a great premise.

Ray Liotta is great in his final role (I think?) and Paul Walter Hauser better get an Emmy. Shades of True Detective meets Mindhunters. Four episodes are out with two more to go. Easily the best TV drama of the year so far for me.

Fun fact: PWH has a rap EP out under the name Signet Ringer. It’s not bad!

Oh and the screenplay is written by Dennis Lehane who wrote Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River, Shutter Island, The Drop, several episodes of The Wire…dude has chops.

@Buzzrock

Thx for this rec.  Amazing thus far.  I kept thinking the actor that plays Lawrence Hallbreminds me a lot of the Richard Jewell actor.  I just realized why.

Also main female has a Jami Gertz feel.  That's not a bad thing.

Watched the first 4 episodes last night. Thanks for the rec. I don't know if I would've noticed it otherwise.

the early apple releases were a little shaky (servant) but they’ve been pretty much nails since.

So much this. Dude makes my skin crawl with the way he speaks and acts.

Yeah the marketing has been non-existent. Someone else told me about last weekend.

Drops at midnight or 2 am CST.

This was a question. After watching Episode 4, you definitely want to see 5.

Episode 5 does the best job in celebrating the victim’s life that I’ve seen on film. I love true crime, but it can be a bit exploitive to the victims and their families.

Yep.  That was a rough scene.  Seeing the hard-ass, main character trying to hold it together and pretend like Larry's story was awesome, was pretty powerful.

Very well done. The cinematography is outstanding. The original soundtrack music (Mogwai) fits perfectly. One episode left.

This show is outstanding. Every part of it. Hauser deserves every award for acting available. Taron doesn't suck either.

Next week is the finale?! Damn.

I didn't know this was Mogwai.  I watched a series a few years ago called Les Revenants.  Mogwai's soundtrack was absolutely perfect for the creepiness of the show.

Friday, and not soon enough either since Mr. Parker done spilt the beans to the inmates about Jimmy.

I don't know what will happen in episode 6 but I have to imagine this has decent ending for Jimmy.

The question is how much damage happened to get Jimmy to that decent ending (a la Andy Dufresne and the Sisters or worse).

Either way, have definitely enjoyed this show so far.

He really is incredible. The way he sometimes doesn’t seem to really be there, and then comes back.

When the show is over I’ll link some stuff I read about him and the production of the show. Could be spoilery to do it sooner.

The most recent episode dropped on Thursday FYI.

Just started this the other night.  We're 4 in I think..

Paul Walter Hauser is pretty fucking amazing.  His mannerisms, his voice and inflections, the random tics and idiosyncrasies.

What a series. PWH should have a fantastic career ahead of him, and everyone else was great too. Nice to see Bunny again.

He’s actually really funny. This is a good interview of him with Rich Eisen. Him talking about heckling James Vanderbeek at a celebrity game was hilarious.

Finished this last night. Incredible series and PWH should definitely get nominated for that performance. I kept thinking Taron seemed out of place in time. The body style he built, the hair and even mannerisms seemed like they belonged in the 50’s or something. A good acting job, I just couldn’t get it out of my head that he seemed to be from the past or something.

He pulls his pants up to his armpits for some reason too.

His WTF interview a couple years ago was great. Unique dude.

When Hauser goes dark. My goodness, what a terrific actor. Great show that leaves you wanting more.

Liotta’s role was very bittersweet. I’m glad he got one more piece of excellent work in.

I know it’s not for everybody, but if you’re a Hauser fan check out Cruella. He steal every scene and smokes a very good actress in Emma Stone.

He’s great in Cruella and I, Tonya. I thought they wasted him a bit in Cobra Kai. I kind of hope he doesn’t get type cast as a creep after this because he has range.

Can’t wait to binge it this weekend. I watched the 20/20 and Dateline (I think it was that and not 48 Hours) on the true story. Just incredible.

This interviewer is awful but he talks about the voice

Final EP is filled with strong acting. So creepy and disturbing. I was going to read the book but now I’m not.

Hauser was so good, there were times when I wanted to jump through the screen and beat his ass myself.

Mrs C-Man and I watched the first two episodes this weekend and I think it’s spectacular so far.

We finally finished last night. My wife fell asleep about 1/3 of the way into Episode 5 the other night so we rewatched the final 35-40 mins of that episode and then the finale. Episode 5 is the best of the series. The flashbacks to the victim's life was so well done, as you said. It reminded me of the very end of Road to Perdition -- the music was uplifting and the girl's recollection of a life (albeit shortened tragically) well lived was very poignant. Then it was juxtaposed with Larry's retelling of the murders to Jimmy ... just chilling.

The final episode was a bit of a letdown but I think that was more because the fifth episode was so powerful. Anyway, this was a great series and Hauser was phenomenal.

More people need to see it. I’m afraid the reach is limited due to the platform it’s on.

It’s pretty much available on every TV/streaming hardware out there.

Yeah but I think they have a tenth of the subscribers of Netflix

Yep, yep. I think you’re right about more marketing… but it hasn’t stopped shows like Ted Lasso or Severance become global hits. I’ll have to ask my buddy on the Tv team what’s up with Blackbird.

Edited by YChang

All I know is if The White Lotus can win an Emmy for Best Drama Miniseries last night, Black Bird should be all over the nominations for the next Emmys. And I liked White Lotus but it's nowhere near the level of Black Bird.

Damn, thought I posted in here. This show is badass. Crazy good

Watching this guy tell his story on countless reruns of 20/20 or Dateline through the years I never thought this was going to get made, especially considering the decision he made, but glad it did and came out so well.
