If anyone is curious about how insane this cat is - let me share with you my experience watching the game last night.

I'm tuned in the entire 2H. Just enjoying the ball. Announcers are calling it, Chris Paul is having a nice game, the Spurs come back out of haltime and string together a lot of nice play.

Everyone's just watching a little early-season NBA action while we try and figure this Spurs team out.

Decently into the 4Q (maybe 9 mins left), either the color or pbp guy starts listing Wemby's #s and goes (totally nonplussed): "Wemby tonight with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 blocks and 4 steals."

And I swear to God everyone collectively watching at home and the announcers themselves - after a few second pause - think "Wait he's a fucking steal away from a fucking 5*5?"

I mean - I'm a ball nerd. I check the box during the game. I'm statistically more than familiar with basically every decade of the league as a whole since the 70s - and it even took me by surprise.

It just looked like this mfer was having a nice night and then 3 possessions later he gets another swipe and picks up the most casual 5*5 you will ever see.

And this is following Wemby posting a horrendous, career-worst 6 points the night before.

He's absolutely insane.

They should call him pizza (or sex).

Even when he's bad, he's good.

Not as impressive as LeBron whoring out his son to make a bunch of headlines.

Lord that vert...

Also - Durant's influence on the game is seriously underrated and not talked about. Everyone always gives Curry flowers for "changing basketball" or whatever (and I agree that he was extremely influential) but Durant did the exact same thing for big men. He showed these kids that you can handle the rock and hit from 3 at that size if you are talented enough/work hard.

I've been saying this a long time. Wemby is 100% near 7'7". I've been around Boban, Tacko Fall, these enormous players. Wemby is taller than them all. https://t.co/TrXixi9bwG

I hate Kevin Hart, but Wemby comes off incredibly mature and intelligent in this. Two weeks with his strength coach training with Shoalin Monks?  On top of one-on-one training with Hakeem?? The league is on fucking notice.

Oh cool Wemby is also Shaq now https://t.co/OZ2YnCqJeE

it’s gonna be wild watching the media do mental gymnastics to give someone other than wemby the mvp every other year.

Was talking about this today. He's a cheat code. If the Spurs can't win a bucket full of championships in his run then it's because Wemby was injured.

This is an easy way to discredit the culture and front office. Wemby isn't winning titles by himself. Duncan didn't win his 5 by himself.

You have to put the pieces together appropriately and play the right way.

I guess so. The way I am left feeling after the other night is that with the bare minimum table stakes management you would expect from everyone except the handful of poverty mismanaged franchies (and Nico), Wemby is completely a variable that cannot be accounted for in a way I think we have rarely, if ever, seen. I could be taken in by the moment and being a recency bias victim here, but it feels like Wemby and a nice player and 3 JAGs should be favorites every year for the next 10 if a) he stays healthy and b) no other genetic freak mutant all-stars come into the league that can meet or beat what wet bananas brings to the game.

edit to add, I have heard pundits describe it as like when Wilt was playing and there was nobody in his stratosphere comparisons type projections.

Yet Wilt only won two rings. Still, long term I like what the Spurs have going with Castle and Harper as their foundation around Wemby. Going to be fun (at least for Spurs fans) to see how it plays out.

I get it but Kevin Garnett didn't win in Minnesota. Charles Barkley never won a title. David Robinson needed Duncan to win.

You can't just hand this guy titles. The greats are greats for a reason. Wemby looks amazing but let's see it in the Western Conference Finals.

Calling the hardline "pundits" is funny.

Precisely.  He looked incredible.   Like "most unstoppable player I've ever seen" incredible but still it takes a full team to win a title.   They have a great base with him and Castle but they still have to build a championship team.   Additionally, as with any "giant" there is that cloud of injury hanging overhead.    I'm hoping we can get 8 top flight seasons where he plays at least 70 gms.   If we get that they should be a top 4 seed annually.

Dude should’ve had the blocks. Sean Elliott went through the all and counted 10. They shorted this ass.

That can be officially revised, can't it?

Victor Wembanyama is 21 years old. He is averaging 33.3 PPG, 13.3 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 6.0 BPG on 63.9% TS with 0.7 TOVs.He just became the first player this century with 100+ points and 18+ blocks in a 3-game span. He's clearly been the best player in the NBA so far this year.
