September 20Sep 20 It's hard to blame Gundy in the NIL era. He lost his sugar daddy. OkieLite was always little sister even with Pickens money.

He also held the occasional wager on college football games. On autumn Saturday mornings his kitchen table in Tuscaloosa, upon which the line sheets were spread, was like the set of The Sting. During the desert wandering years before Saban, Alabama once had a QB2 who was a baseball pitcher. QB1 went down to a knee injury, and the pitcher started a few games. I believe we lost them all. Dad’s customers continued to bet Bama anyway, every week. He would jack up the line, pretending it had shifted. If the actual line was Bama -6, he would “adjust” the 6 to 10 or 11 and make a few extra bucks each weekend. He knew he was safe because of the baseball QB, who was a decent athlete but a shitty passer. “That boy couldn’t hit a bull in the ass with a bass fiddle.” Dad would have a heyday with this SEC. In my dotage (74) and since Bama’s off this week, I was reflecting on autumn Saturday mornings at my in-laws circa 1970-2000, which were joyfully entertaining. Never been a morning drinker, but there’s a first time for everything. Good luck tonight over the Shoustons.

If he took half his salary every year and used it to buy up trailer parks, he probably owns the whole state by now. Plus all the mineral rights, wait is meth a mineral?

In today's environment? They're looking around and seeing programs improve quickly through NIL. Gundy thought he was being morally superior by not going that route. I understand he's down a qb and some guys, but that's a piss poor team he's trotting out there. And then you have similar programs in conference, like Tech and to some extent, ASU, who are thriving because they're playing the NIL game. If this keeps up, game 6. There's never been any loyalty in college football.

September 20Sep 20 The "durnit, they were doin' different stuff" comment post game hit a little too close to home. "I thought (Tulsa) did a great job early in the game with some of the concepts that we hadn't (anticipated) on defense," Gundy said.

TCU did with Gary and if Ok State is smart they will pull the trigger on Gundy before he burns the program down. Dykes might not be the long term answer for TCU, but Gary was about to blow the program up that he had worked so hard to build and a change had to be made for the good of the program.

While the school probably isn't happy w Gundy, he did restructure his contract to provide more money for investment. I think he gets the grace of a full season. Perhaps @'stache can elaborate on the current climate.
September 20Sep 20 Things need to be done in a certain order, or failure is almost guaranteed. They need the AD position to be stable first. (That said, Texas honored this in 2013 and screwed up totally by hiring Steve Patterson).

The amount doesn't decrease until sometime in 2027. In other words, they could fire him and pay up. Or, maybe negotiate something lower in exchange for his "retirement" this winter.
September 20Sep 20 Can players transfer if the coach is fired during the season? I thought this was the case with UCLA?

September 20Sep 20 He’ll get the rest of the season and retire. I really don’t want an interim then questions whether to just hire that person. Need a complete reset.

My F-I-L never missed a chance to use the word “ass” even if “butt” would sound better. For example, he would say “signed, sealed and delivered ASS” when theorizing about a rigged bout he booked that ended up costing him $$.
September 20Sep 20 Question- googling shows the Pickens foundation still giving to OSU athletics. Maybe not Phil Knight money, but still something significant. Does the foundation limit how it’s used?
September 20Sep 20 Boone’s final gift to OSU was primarily for education and some for golf. I doubt he’d be interested in funding $40 million annual football payroll. More than half of what he gave overall to OSU was for education. https://news.okstate.edu/articles/communications/2023/oklahoma_state_university_receives_a_120_million_gift_from_t_boone_pickens_foundation.html Edited September 20Sep 20 by 'stache

Lol, no. Plus Boone died in 2019 when things were still going well. The money has already been disbursed. And I doubt any such clause would be enforceable. I'm also not aware of any other money coming to OSU from Boone's Foundation, at least not from anything directed by Boone himself. Edited September 22Sep 22 by 'stache

September 23Sep 23 It was like a real life experiment to see how long a coach could quit on the job before he got fired. In this case it was over two years.
