One of my students did that on the Texas coast 45 years ago, broke his neck and died a week later.

One of the few things that my parents warned me about that always stuck with me. A lot of things they'd say I'd brush off, but not that. I've been fanatical about it all my life.

Didn't help that a good friend of mine went quadraplegic after boogie boarding at a relatively calm Kauai beach. It wasn't a big day and the spot isn't known as a dangerous one, but one unexpected spill and it's lights out.

A lot of us can share a similar story about diving in a pool in the shallow end.  Neighbor had a party two years ago for some kids on the football team, one dove in and hasnt walked since.
