June 8, 20241 yr I wish we took men’s sprints more seriously! No reason we shouldn’t have one of the fastest men’s teams in the country every year. I know track is more than speed and it’s a team effort but for once I would like to see Texas win the men’s 4x100 relay. Texas has to much speed not to

February 6Feb 6 Finally watching S2 of Sprint. Great coverage of JuJu. Coach Flo gets some good screen time and is rocking the UT gear. Nice exposure!
February 11Feb 11 So... what's going here? Women's track is currently unranked? https://www.ustfccca.org/2025/02/featured-ncaa-division-1/2025-ncaa-di-womens-indoor-track-field-rating-index-checkpoint-2
February 27Feb 27 I guess this explains why we aren't expected to contend for for the directors cup this year.
March 2Mar 2 The baton drop in the 4x4 relay in the men's race and the women getting DQ'd in their 4x4 race didn't help, but both teams lagged the entire competition. Texas did have some graduation losses, I mean Neugebauer was amazing and always scored points but sitting there on Saturday and watching Arkansas with three athletes in one final and/or Texas A&M with the same in another, and then teams like Auburn and Alabama having some solid depth in certain events and the points for the Longhorns aren't there. I don't have insight into the program behind the scenes, but as great as many of the athletes are on a global level, track is fighting pretty hard to stay relevant right now (in the US). Conjecture on my part is that programs that pour NIL money into this specific sport (plus XC) and the portal give an advantage, especially with the way the NCAA disburses scholarships and numbers of allowed scholarships. But as I said, I don't know anything specific w/respect to the Longhorn teams. Some of the athletes set personal bests and I always like to see that. Here are the results from the meet: https://flashresults.com/2025_Meets/Indoor/02-27_SEC/index.htm The meet was at A&M in their new facility. Having attended meets in their old place (Gilliam), there are some things about the new building I like: more seating and it wraps around 3/4 of the track and the banking is such that the finish line view is better. In Gilliam, the officials that were waiting or off duty used to lean on the railing by the finish and depending upon your seat, would inadvertently block sight lines. A friend occasionally served as a meet official and I mentioned it to him more than once, but it was apparently a hard habit to break, especially since T&F (like many sports) is hurting for officials and so you see some fairly elderly folks spending all day on their feet. I also don't like that the shot put and weights are pretty much invisible for most in attendance from the general seats. I'm also not a fan of playing music while making announcements simultaneously--you're inside in a cheaply made building with a lot of metal seating and the acoustics are ass. The announcers try and introduce the athletes and even though I often know who the athletes are, others don't and you can't hear anything except a Peanuts voice because of the usual track noises, people yelling, and music playing. I'm getting older so that's likely me being a bit cranky about it, but considering that a good portion of attendees are family members of athletes, I like to see the students recognized and given their due, especially in the finals. The sprint and hurdle races are in the middle now, and that has its pluses and minuses but I won't go into the particulars on that. This meet had a lot of false starts and in the first (slower) sections of the distance races, there were issues because the slower sections are frequently packed. For ex, the men's 3000 had (I think) 3 false starts and I know in at least one of them, a UT athlete went down and I think it was Berhane (a jr) due to the scrum. While the final second section is where the faster runners are, it wouldn't have killed them to have 3 sections. These athletes are running ~8:00 minute times on average (best time overall in the second section was 7:53 by Drew Rogers of Missouri in a fantastic come-from-behind win). While the women's race doesn't have quite as many runners, the total time it adds for an extra section M/F is only around 20 minutes with set up and all and the meet was over at 7ish as it was. The running events started around 4:00 and that was when a majority of the fans showed up (side note: we were alone in our spot for a goodly part of the meet but damn I hate it when fans show up, sit right behind me, and spend the entire time talking and not paying attention to the meet. We usually try and find seats with the press box right behind us so we can avoid that but it doesn't always work out.) We missed a lot of the prelims because the meet was held over three days but any day to watch track live is a good day and there were some exciting moments.
March 2Mar 2 I was talking to a friend the other day. There is no reason Texas shouldn’t be a player in T&F year in and year out specifically in Women’s. Men’s I can understand cause most Texas athletes will choose other sports but I just feel like we leave so much on the table in T&F. A&M, UofH and Baylor just seems like they take it more serious than Texas and even Tech at times. Hopefully coach Flo can turn this around

May 5May 5 Duncanville kid is going to Georgia. 100m winner was a junior; not sure about him, but he may just go straight pro after running a legal 9.92
May 5May 5 With as many great track athletes as there are in Texas in men's and womens, why isn't Texas getting any? Wondering minds want to know.

Georgia ruined Bolling. He would have been better off going pro.
May 8May 8 @Mrs Whiggins @BurntOrange&White is a lunkhead, but he asked the right question about T&F, of course in the wrong forum on the wrong thread. Still, how does the T&F program get competitive again at Texas and how far behind, really, is Texas from the upper tier? How wide of a gap?

There was some talk about it in the T&F thread on the "Texas Sports" subforum but not much information. I assume it has to do with poor performance in relays? Edited May 8May 8 by BurntOrange&White
May 8May 8 Although Texas has still never won an outdoor men’s T&F national championship, the Texas men have finished runner-up in the NCAAs 4 times and most recently in 2022 under our current Coach Flo. We had the team to get over the hump in 2022, but we choked it away in a few events where we were heavy favorites and Florida took advantage to win the chip that year.

Still, how does the T&F program get competitive again at Texas and how far behind, really, is Texas from the upper tier? How wide of a gap? Eh, sorry, I answered it in that forum. I agree with @perfectchaos007 that it's not so much that there is a gap, they've had some chips fall for other teams in various races and events and they need a little more depth. That's where that talent jamming (mentioned below) can come in handy. A&M can run relay teams A, B, and C down pretty far in the 400 before the times rise and that is valuable. For example, while only one school's relay team earns the points for a win, that still means multiple athletes available for individual events, injuries, etc. Any team, no matter how talented has to not do things like drop the baton because with the top teams placements sometimes coming down to the big relay points, that's going to hurt. That is where breadth comes in (i.e. Tech has some outstanding sprinters, but was weak in other areas and it hurt them). The point about some athletes going straight pro is also a thing. But then again, some schools will still manage to make it work (during the recruiting process) with the similar to bball one or two years while waiting for the Olympics to roll around. The hardest thing about going pro straight from high school is structure. As tough as it is for student athletes to do both academic and athletic endeavors, it is still a worthwhile pursuit.
May 18May 18 Some nice individual showings, but we are miles behind in the sec track scene right now.

June 12Jun 12 Everybody mad finals except the 4x400. Smallwood and Blackwood are both sitting in the top half of their races. Not sure about Butler in the 200. 4x100 is sitting 8th, had a bad hand off on the first exchange.
June 12Jun 12 Men's Semi results: 4x1 qualified for Friday's final with the last spot by time. 8th fastest so we'll need to improve to get some meaningful points. Smallwood qualified in the 110's in 2nd fastest time. Blackwood qualified in the 400H in 3rd fastest time. Butler qualified in the 200 in 6th fastest time. 4x4 did not qualify. Ended with 12th fastest time.

June 12Jun 12 Yea looks like he left extra early at the 2nd leg. Feel like they would’ve been more in that race. gotta be better Friday
June 12Jun 12 Texas women just concluded their 4x100 heat. Top 2 advance automatically and Texas finished 3rd in their heat, so we'll wait for the other heats to finish to see if they can sneak into the finals based on time.
