October 22Oct 22 Kelly: No turning back from Quinn Ewers now | Opinion Click-baity headline, but it goes into why Ewers was promoted to 2nd string and what the Dolphins will do from here. tl;dr: 1. Ewers ran the scout team all week and wasn't told he'd be 2nd string until Saturday night; 2. Wilson was demoted because he was so bad in practice during the week that McDaniel decided to bench him for a 7th round rookie who'd been running the other teams' plays all season. Wow. Quote “I have no clue,” Ewers said after the game when asked why the Dolphins made the switch at backup quarterback against the Browns. “I have no idea, to be honest with you.” Will it continue through next week? “We’ll see,” said Ewers, who completed 5 of 8 passes, throwing for 53 yards in his fourth-quarter work against the Browns. He was sacked two times, and 40 of those 53 yards came on a deep pass to Dee Eskridge, which Ewers threw a second before being blasted by a Browns defensive lineman who had easily gotten by left guard Jonah Savaiinaea, a fellow rookie. Ewers was told he would be the backup Saturday evening, after the team arrived at its Cleveland hotel. “It was a usual week of work for me, working scout team or whatnot,” said Ewers, who completed 64.9% of his passes in college, throwing for threw for 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns in three seasons at Texas. “At the end of the day, it’s part of our position to be prepared for the game plan, whatever it may be.” After the game McDaniel admitted he told Wilson the switch had a ton to do with how he practiced that week, and the rainy conditions Miami was planning to play in.

I doubt he sells much, but at least he gets to keep a good chunk of whatever he sells. You'd have to be one hell of a Ewers stan to wear one of those t-shirts around.

November 8Nov 8 I’d buy some brecklyn Hager branded gear before Ewers. Who the emblem be a pride of fuck lions or something?
December 17Dec 17 Great to hear but I wish he had more time to grow into the position and didn’t play for a moribund franchise. Good luck, Quinn!!

He's been the scout team QB all season (like Sheduer was) and this will likely be the first time he's had first team reps all season. They're going to have to keep it simple and I wouldn't expect much. That said, the Dolphins need to know what they have in him and Ewers needs to take advantage of the opportunity.
December 17Dec 17 Great opportunity on a shit franchise. Cincy is a lame duck team with a bad defense. Expectations are low but this is a pretty low pressure situation to begin your career.
December 17Dec 17 Tua was awful in their Monday night game. He threw a couple of interceptions that were terrible decisions.

December 17Dec 17 I was a defender of Quinn at Texas, never wavering in the view that while he definitely has flaws, he was hurt, his coach is a head case (stubborn, wedded to schemes that weren't good for the personnel we had, etc.), and his OL was often a problem. but I thought he was a career backup most likely. this doesn't change that but insane he's getting a shot as a rookie.

This is Miami throwing a hail mary. They are a disaster and need to figure out if they need to go all in on a QB. They are giving Ewers a huge opportunity going against the worst defense in the NFL.

If they had a five-game winning streak before the Monday loss, why are they benching Tua? I see they are 6-8 and he has 20 TDS but 15 iNTS, so that's not good. Still, his rating is 88.5, which is 'above average.' Why are they benching him?

They are exploring their options. Not unusual for bad teams to to give hteir back-up a shot late in the year.

No need to risk injury to Tua and might as well see what you have in Quinn before the off-season.

Fuck, I lost my quarterfinal game because Tua couldn't get the ball to Waddle -- well, anybody other than Waller -- on a 17-degree night in Pissburgh. Predicted to get 16 points, I think he got 4.5 and I lost my playoff game by 5 or so. 25 minutes ago, TreatyOak said: Thanks. I don't follow the NFL too closely and I don't understand. Tua wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire during the streak but they were winning games and they cited a stat early in Monday's game about his poor record when temps are below 40 (I think). It was 17 degrees that night. He made some truly braindead throws on MNF, which tracks considering all his concussions. Dude should probably just hang it up. 17 minutes ago, EvilCaseMcCoy said: They are statistically eliminated from playoffs.
