That's awesome!  I don't think I've ever made more than $100.

I think $100 might be my largest cut as well, haha. Most of our band is pleasantly surprised when money comes our way. We're perfectly happy with the free bar tab.

Los Lobos tonight at L’Auberge

When I was involved in a money losing music promotion venture out in Midland a decade ago we got to see the going rates for a lot of bands. Texas bands who you’ve heard of (think Ray Wylie Hubbard, lower level Texas country bands) were in the $5-10K range. Any national level act whose name you’ve heard was $15-20K plus. I believe we got Avett Bros for $30-40K and that was a discount because we caught them in a convenient spot in between shows.  I suspect 38 Special was somewhere between $25-50K.

Cool post, thanks. Yeah, I wonder what a lot of types of acts cost these days. Would be interesting to know.

Yeah it would. The economics seem to have changed quite a bit since Covid. I wish I still had some of the paperwork we got from the big agencies. I remember being surprised by some of the numbers - some more than expected, some less. Probably not surprising that the bigger nationally recognizable touring acts were $100K plus.

A buddy of mine ran promotions for an extremely well known Austin brand for years.  Lots of branded big stages, lots of smaller "private events".  He was very tied into Nashville, and is in fact very close with Jack White, but mostly worked on the Americana side of things.  We were talking about pricing one day and I asked if a Keith Urban or Miranda Lambert type would do show X and if so how much?  First he laughed, and then the number "think of how much a million dollars is" came out of his mouth.  Not that they book that every on event, but getting a one off is apparently super pricey for the superstars.

Did everyone get a free push of heroin at the door?

Springsteen and the E Street Band for the opening gig of the 2024 tour on Tuesday in Phoenix.   Looked like an AARP convention, both in the stands and on the stage.  But even at 74 the guy puts on a close to 3 hour show and has more energy than performers half his age.

The LCD Soundsystem show in Guadalajara was incredible. Had not seen them live before, and it's such a completely different experience than listening to the records.  Felt like we were at a house party.

80s music spotted on various calendars that coming up in Austin... what did I miss?

Adam Ant - The English Beat @ ACL Live

Pretenders @ ACL Live

Tesla @ ACL Live

New Kids on the Block - Paul Abdul - DJ Jazzy Jeff @ Germania Insurance

OMD @ ACL Live

Echo & The Bunnyment @ Stubb's

Naked Eyes, Wang Chung, The Motels @ The Railhouse in Kyle

Really leaning into going to Echo & The Bunnymen.  Got tix for my wife's birthday for NKOTB.  OMD... heard they're still great live.  Saw them in 1988.

I would love to see The Pretenders before I shuffle off this mortal coil, but she's way way older than even me.  I just wonder if they still bring it?

Air Supply (!!!) is playing at the HEB Center in Cedar Park later this summer, although they're probably spreading the schmaltzy '70s -'80s timeline.

Schmaltzy is a good word.  Is Christopher Cross opening?

Gary P Nunn at a Save Muny benefit.

Criminally under appreciated by the crowd.

I've seen LCD live three times -- twice in Dallas and once at ACL back in 2016. The first time I saw them at Southside Ballroom in Dallas was life-changing. I was pissed when a huge storm blew through on a Sunday last June (maybe it was June of 2022, I can't remember) and washed out their outdoor festival-closing set in Grand Prairie. Wife and I are set to see them close out Kilby Block Party in SLC in mid-May. I can't wait.

Gary Clark JR tonight for an ACL taping.

Going to see King George for like the 15th+ time in June at Kyle Field. I know, but don’t hate. :)

Going to a buddies wedding reception/eclipse party in Dripping Springs.  He booked Black Joe Louis and Golden Dawn Arkestra to play.  Stoked!

Shows I currently have tickets to (in Portland):

Helmet 4/23

Wine Lips 5/19

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets 5/26

Front 242 9/14

La Femme 11/22

Clan of Xymox is back in June -- Elysium

Just picked up Meatbodies and Of Montreal

Busy summer of shows and I haven't even started booking my backyard stage yet.

Got a ‘70’s pop summer lined up, first up is 10cc at ACL Live in early August (no Eric Stewart, but Graham Gouldman and half of the six-member Dreadlock Holiday era band), then a couple of weeks later Barry Manilow at Moody (wife’s favorite), then back at Moody in October for ELO.

I lucked into free GA tickets from Little Steven to the Springsteen show in San Francisco last night and it was an epic night for my wife, daughter, and me (our son missed out because he was away on a school trip).

The show itself was incredible. It was our first Springsteen concert and I’m kicking myself for not attending one when I was younger.

During the show, Little Steven gestured for me to give him the hat I was wearing. He and Bruce took turns wearing it for nearly an entire song.

To make the night even crazier, Bruce handed my daughter his harmonica after playing it.

You get a free bowl of soup with that hat?

Totally. I was just being a smart ass about the hat.

Legitimately one of the coolest live music stories I've ever heard. Maybe the coolest.  Definitely a story your whole family will be sharing for years on end.

That said, I am laughing at your daughter telling her friends that story.  "That's awesome!  What did the hat say?"  She looks down, shuffles her feet and sheepishly mutters, "a trucker hat with 'I love girls' on it".

Sunday - early show - went with the gf and her kids to see Marchfourth.  Imagine the lovechild of a marching band and a circus.  Really fun time.

Glad to hear they're still going. They came through Austin a handful of times during the mid-late 2000s and their shows were always a great time.

Just bought tickets to Echo and the Bunnymen.  Right now Stubb's is selling two for one tickets to the show but I'm not sure if that ends tonight.

April schedule

Shows are clustered. Wife will be irritated.

Band of Horses is putting on a free show in waco at indian spring park on friday. I’m gonna try to make it but driving from dallas on a fri afternoon will be a shitshow.

Black crowes on sat in irving

Read Southall band and Glorious sons at HOB in dallas on apr 11

Thanks for the heads up on this. My wife and I are now thinking of popping down there. Looks like you just show up. Can take chairs/blankets and coolers with drinks/snacks. (Wonder if that means booze.) BoH at 7, though, which will be tough to get down to in time. But it also means getting back at a more reasonable time. I've seen Lukas Nelson enough and don't feel the need to stick around for him at 9.

The next time I remember whether it's Band of Horses or Band of Heathens that is from Austin will be the first.  I think I need a cognitive test.  Person, camera, yada yada yada

What part of dallas are you in? I’m in far north dallas near the tollway and bush. The tollway with its one lane exit onto 35 through the mavericks’ parking lot is a masterclass in bonehead design.

I'm near Love Field. The redesign of that entire stretch of 35 that runs by the west side of downtown is a master class in taking something that might not really be a problem and making it infinitely worse. Abject stupidity.

I've got to go to a work event at the Nasher and Dallas Art Fair from 3-5 on Fri. I'm thinking of ducking out with my wife a little early and jumping in the car for Waco around 4:30 or so. Could be a dumb idea but ... I'm not a smart man.

Ministry tonight was a fun show. Al has slowed down a lot but they sounded great and the energy in the crowd was really good. image.thumb.jpeg.9819bb66f02f383e4f16b051cc55dc54.jpeg

Reminds me of one of my favorite shirts in late high school and early college.  It said, "Texas Girl Lover."   I think it was representing somebody's dad's porn mag or something, but it was a cool shirt.  Luckily you will never find me in a hat or cap.  But without a doubt the best rock and roll hat story ever told....
