August 16Aug 16 Nine Inch Nails in Denver tonight. Utterly fantastic. If you get a chance to go, do it.

August 18Aug 18 don't understand grandmaster at all, thought they were very boring. white boy funk with a cult twist, how original.

He was kind of a dick. I saw Paul McCartney at ACL and he was fucking incredible. Hope he's still got some juice left 7 years later. But watching a then-76-year-old man running across the stage for like 2.5 hours was impressive.

Punk needs assholes running the show. Last time I saw them he ended the show by fighting some dude from the crowd and then throwing the drum kit off stage. I think it was during Fuck You up and Get High. On point. I've seen Paul many times and am very excited about this last run. Every show I've seen has been killer. The guy was made to be on stage. I've also got a ticket to his preshow soundcheck, which is essentially another hour long show of b-sides and buried deep tracks. The guy is amazing. Glad you saw him at ACL; heard that was a great show.

August 22Aug 22 Went to see a friend's band at a small Austin club last night. They were good, not great. Need a better drummer. The opener was the craziest shitshow I've seen in a while. Some old dude on guitar who clearly has played for decades, another old dude on drums who could play OK, and then 4 millenials who I swear must have been recruited from School of Rock. A gal on "piano", a gal on fiddle, a rock-looking dude on a Tele and a bass player who couldn't be bothered to realize his tone was totally distorted. It was the most heinous mess of amateurism I've seen in a long time. They played 5 covers, no originals, and jammed on every song, rotating around so everyone could solo every song. Seriously, it felt like one of those middle school summer band camp kind of bands. "Live Music Capitol of the World" my ass.
August 23Aug 23 Saw the offspring last night at dos equis in dallas. The show was a lot of fun. The intro was a lot like an nba intro with a fuck you cam, bootie shake cam, and kiss cam. We all know the coldplay punchline to the kiss cam but it still hit pretty well. They played the hits and had various accessories for songs like giant blow up skeletons, a blimp, giant beach balls, streamer cannons, and a giant video board. The band engaged with the audience quite a bit. It was a lot like a flaming lips show. The lead singer has lost a step or two with his vocals. He could hit the notes but it wasn’t as powerful as years past. The drummer is new and is fantastic. He did a short solo that was dope. Everyone around me was talking about it. They did a tip of the cap to ozzy and covered crazy train. That was pretty cool. They followed it with a cover of the ramones. I mean how often do you get to see a guy with bleach blonde hair and a phd in molecular biology do a cover of “i wanna be sedated” with a dude in a gorilla mask running across the stage with a sign that says “I wanna be…” Fun stuff.

Yep- ditto... caught them at the woodlands last night. Drummer is damn good and so was the guitarist they only let have any attention during the Crazy Train cover. And Noodles, man you're getting too old for that haircut.
August 24Aug 24 The Boys From Oklahoma tour in Waco last night was so badass. Robert Earl Keen made an appearance and sang my hometown the Charlie Robison song as tribute. Randy rogers played a song as well. Ragweed killed it and turnpike was great as ever.
August 25Aug 25 saw jerry cantrell saturday night at emo's. played 6 or 7 aic songs and the rest were his solo stuff. wasn't sure what kind of crowd to expect but there were a lot of people there. it was good, not great. i didn't love his backing band.

Turnpike absolutely blew the fucking doors off. Ragweed was really really good, but I’ve seen turnpike about 10 times and that was the most badass, buttoned up version of them I’ve ever seen. Like Evan finally realizing that as introverted as he is, he was built and born for what he’s doing, and letting go, without all the addictions controlling it. So happy we went. The entire lineup was pretty awesome, and for the first time with full blown alcohol sales at McLane it was shockingly not 1000% terrible (if you were willing to mill about and find the free radical beer guy). Some things we need to button up, but I was happy about the first run overall.

That dudes voice has such a folk and americano sound to it and can fill an entire stadium. I’ve seen them before at Floores when they opened for Whiskey Myers.
August 26Aug 26 Didn't go, but it's hard for me to imagine a universe in which Turnpike Troubadours open for Canadian Crapweed. Well, except for the current shitty music universe. Edited August 26Aug 26 by DougO

I’ve seen Wade probably around 30-40 times or more over the years. Their act was really good. when Turnpike went from “…before the devil knows we’re dead” to “Good Lord Lorrie” almost in a pen stroke, the crowd pretty well lost it. Was just perfect transition. and I’ve seen them in big venues and in small, but I’ve never heard them sound as good as they did Saturday. Cross was exactly as I expected….loud, brash, incredibly fun, funny, a little unpolished, and with plenty of guests. The guests were perfect. REK rolling up to sing Charlie made me drop a happy tear. Django and the whole crew ripping LA Freeway to close it was a nice cherry. Just a phenomenal night. glad y’all had a big time bud
August 26Aug 26 Went with Erhine and our respective wives, show was fucking awesome. Badass to see CCR again, I cant remember last time I saw them live. The closer slapped and went hard in the paint. A freestyle version of Boys from Oklahoma featuring just about every special guest was great but closing with LA Freeway was badass

At some point he asked "Dad, can we go see Phoenix?" To be fair, Phoenix was far from the worst band he liked. That was Imagine Dragons. Anyway, I bought a pair of tix to Phoenix, and one night my wife and I are watching TV on the couch, and it occurred to me we had those tickets. I asked my wife "hey, what day is that Phoenix concert?" Turns out it was just about over. My son did not take the news well.
August 26Aug 26 I keep my concert list/date/which app has the tickets in the notes app on my phone. Helps keep it reasonably well organized so that I don’t forget about them or which of the various apps has the tickets.
August 26Aug 26 anyone hitting The Pixies next week? gonna be rough getting up for the game in the morning but that'll be a fun 1-2 punch
August 29Aug 29 Not letting cancer fucking get in the way of Oasis tonight! Warming up with Cage the Elephant now.

August 31Aug 31 Made a quick trip over to London over last weekend to see my daughter there one last time before she moves away for grad school. While we were there, Coldplay was playing. At Wembley. Dude. So yeah, I spent some money for three tickets.I’m not the world’s biggest Coldplay fan. But….holy f’n shit, their show at Wembley may have been the best concert I’ve ever seen. We’ve always wanted to see a show at Wembley (Live Aid was 40 years ago this summer….yeesh). It helped that I was there with people I loved, but we were also at one of the most storied stadiums on the planet…with 90,000 people from (literally) all over the world, all together in one of the world’s great cities. Humanity. In simultaneous joyful celebration. The band had the crowd in the palm of their hands, and that crowd was happy to go wherever Coldplay took them. I just typed a bunch of words, but words really don’t do the experience justice. The most-attended concert tour in history, at one of the world’s greatest venues, with a band that didn’t have a single miss. Fantastic.

The lead singer (Pat) and drummer (Tim) left to form Canyon Lights. The guitarist for GA-20 kept the name and brought on new members. I think the new guy's voice is a definite step down from Pat Faherty's and his hair is like 10 steps down.
September 2Sep 2 September shows so far: Wed 9/3: The Osees @ Star Theater Sat 9/6: The Leo Moon Trio in The Backyard at the Barage (my house) Sun 9/14: Viagra Boys @ McMenamin's Grand Lodge Sat 9/20: Tim Perry in the Backyard at the Barage
September 2Sep 2 Weird Al was... really low energy crowd at first, full speed an hour in, and everyone was standing by the end. He's old, and so are we, his audience.
