October 12Oct 12 I got tickets for LCD Soundsystem in NYC in December- their recent Austin show was a lot of fun so this seemed like a decent excuse for a NYC trip.
October 12Oct 12 Went to see The Lumineers last night at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. Have always wanted to see them but it never worked out until now. Great show, exceeded expectations. I was very impressed by their band members’ diversity of musical talents and most of them rotating through multiple instruments throughout the show.

He did this in detroit a few months ago. Also he never wears shoes or socks! Guys a wild man!
October 14Oct 14 High Water Fest lineup unexpectedly dropped today. Caamp headlining and MMJ make it entirely worth it. A little odd that MMJ headlined just a few years ago and do not appear to be playing last on Saturday. I hope they get a similar-length set to the Shakes. Shovels & Rope no longer curate so the lineup has gotten a little less indie/eclectic the last few years. Counting Crows were terribad last year -- at least this year's "Crow" band will probably sound a bit better. And Bruce Hornsby? WTAF (though quick Internet search shows this might be some bluegrass project he's doing now, which might fit better than his mainstream shit from 30 years ago.)
October 15Oct 15 McMurtry at Continental Club last night. I've attended his shows there fairly regularly for over 20 years now and must admit that I'm glad it's at 10:00 these days instead of midnight like it had been for ages (although the early Gallery shows have always been an excellent alternative). He played a wide range including a few from his new album and as far back as 1989, closing with a powerful/heavy version of Too Long in the Wasteland and a fun one earlier on from 1995 (Fuller Brush Man). He still draws a big crowd- we're lucky to have such easy access to his shows.
October 15Oct 15 How did I not know his band is now a 4-piece? I thought he toured as a trio. Who's the other guitar player?
October 15Oct 15 Sugar reunited and hope to see them when they expand their tour: https://sugarcopperblue.com/category/video/
October 17Oct 17 Stews tonight in dallas Black rebel motorcycle club tomorrow in austin F1 on sunday Great weekend
October 18Oct 18 The Stews brought it last night. They closed the show with “9-5” and transitioned in and out of “War pigs”. They do have an annoying following though. Groups of college kids chattering, getting hammered, and losing all sense of self-awareness.

Man I’m so tired of people showing up to concerts or even football games and just chatting up non-stop, with no focus on the event they attended. Stay home and chat on the porch if you want to do that. Just stfu.
October 20Oct 20 brmc at mohawk saturday night. was on the floor and it was far too sweaty for an october night. they played all of howl and 5 or 6 other songs. i saw them at the parish 20 years ago when they originally toured for howl. it's not an album i listen to much, had forgotten how emo it is. it got a bit too whiney for me a couple times, was happy when they got to the rock portion of the show. tom petty tribute concert yesterday at hotel ella. the damn torpedoes were the backing band for several guests, and then played their own set of covers. kevin russell and kelley mickwee did a great job on stop dragging my heart around and nightwatchman. ray benson covered you don't know how it feels, and he flubbed a lot of the lyrics. the damn torpedoes drummer remains the most energetic, over the top drummer i've seen in quite some time. now let's talk about this boomer trend that i find infuriating. they will get there early and set up in the back of the venue next to a table or rail they can lean on. then they expect that no one will stand in front of them in the vast amount of open space available between them and the stage. the conversation usually goes something like this: boomer: are you seriously going to stand right there? me: yes boomer: i got here very early to stand here. it's extremely rude that you think you can waltz right in and stand in front of me. me: you're welcome to stand in front of me, there's plenty of room. boomer: but i want to stay in this spot me: well that's your choice then

October 20Oct 20 As long as I can get a rail spot on the top balcony at Mohawk, I'm good. If it's too crowded for that it's hard to finagle decent sight and sound. (It's still probably my favorite club in town, though.)
October 21Oct 21 The rail at Mohawk is great - usually easy to do it if you get there early enough. I always tell me wife, once we have the rail, one of us is not moving for the next three hours. Let me tell you... she LOVES that.
October 21Oct 21 thankfully i've never had to deal with this scenario, but what happens if a dude has to shit at mohawk...he has to use the women's restroom? the mens room is only urinals. pretty sure i would go across the street to the sheraton if that situation ever arose.
October 21Oct 21 Saw OSEES at Hotel Vegas on Saturday. The sound was fucked up for a lot of the show and Dwyer kept saying they couldn't hear anything out of the monitors - I think that got fixed at some point but not sure. They were scheduled to play until 10:30 but wrapped it up about 20m early, Dwyer was obviously quite pissed with the venue. Even with all that crap OSEES still brought it and I'll be there when they make their next Austin run. Edited October 21Oct 21 by elguapo

Almost had to go with some HPD (as his wife told me) at one of the last Robert Earl Keen concerts. Just be nice. I also know that I will take my space back if I want it. Unless you are like 340 lbs. Now that said I know exactly the trend. If you want your territory you have to hold your territory. That's why three people or more is best for space holding. Or you just be like me and keep moving around a space constantly dancing, waving my arms and hammering drinks... If you can survive the headliner surge, you can keep a decent amount of space.
October 21Oct 21 I'm not a big guy and I got very adept at the side-step and shuffle to worm my way to the front, but over the years I've lost interest. But yeah, if you get in front of me so tight that I might as well be rogering you, we have a problem.

October 22Oct 22 Went to Thrice last night at Emo’s and going to Noah Cyrus at Emo’s tonight. Quite the opposite experience I would think.
October 23Oct 23 Nation of Language last night at The Studio at the Bomb Factory. They were on fucking fire. Guess y’all tuned them up pretty good the night before at The Mohawk because they said they were really impressed with the Texas crowds about halfway thru the set. If you’re in Houston and on the fence on tonight’s show, just go.Had zero idea they were from the US (Brooklyn). I have just assumed they were from Britain. Very 80’s/New Order vibe but I read about their Krautrock adjacency and now I can’t unhear it.The chick in the band seems pretty cute.

October 23Oct 23 Lyle Lovett, Large Band, Bass Hall last Friday night. Great show in the finest venue in all the land. Acoustically perfect. We’ve seen Lyle numerous times in a variety of venues and it’s a different show every time. First saw him in 87 at a small theater in Dallas and didn’t really know who he was. Saw him at Red Rocks and he gave Francene Reed her own part of the show to highlight her. This was probably our tenth time. He’s changed so much from then, he’s 60 and dad to 8 yo twins and married. He didn’t sing LA County but maybe cos the kids were there. The band is always impeccable with Russ Kunkle and Leland Sklar on drums and bass. he told some stories of his time at A&M with Robert Earl Keen. He told about meeting Michael Martin Murphy who played there in 75, and then brought him out for a duet. Then he left so mmm could sing. He did Wildfire and hit the high notes at 80! Great show.
October 23Oct 23 Grabbed a presale ticket for Puscifer at Bass in March. Going to Gary Numan on Saturday.

There were people sitting down on the ground (gross) between the opener and wetleg, which gives the illusion of there being space for people to occupy if they want to move up. When people saw there was, in fact, no space they would just kinda muscle their way into an already-jammed-up space, further pissing everyone off around them. With that bullshit, it's always teens and twenty-somethings. Then there were the drunk boomer moms dressed up like painted whores. Super wasted 60-something woman next to me trying to sexy dance the entire show, stumbling into me and my wife. The old rich guy she was with was also super fucked up. Sooooooo many drunk boomers. They have zero fucking show etiquette. From now on, if a band I want to go see is currently being played on KUTX, then I will only go see them at a venue with seats. The goddamn kids and the fucking olds have no idea how to behave themselves in public.

I saw him last year at the ACL 50th taping and he was a little creaky in the vocal department, but still enjoyable. That band just flat out smokes, year after year. I've had the pleasure of messaging back and forth with Sklar over the years, and he is clearly very proud to play in the Large Band. Given his long and storied track record, that's saying something.
