Uhhh . . . not to belabor the topic, but my daughter's band just got added to ACL Fest, both weekends.

Saw the Dwarves, Helmet and GWAR a couple of nights ago. What a blast. The Dwarves continue to be my fave punk band of all time, and even though they've slowed down 1000% from the "fuck and fight onstage" phase, they were still a blast. Blag threw me the mic so I sang a few bars of Unrepentant before tossing it back to him; crowd was unsure what to expect from them but the Dwarves brought great energy and the crowd responded with a great pit and tons of crowd surfing. Helmet was solid. And if you've ever seen GWAR, you know what you're going to get. This round they had some sort of Trump / Pope amalgam come out for praise and worship of DJR before getting an axe in his head and then bending over to shoot blood and goo out of his ass all over the crowd. Like I said, you know what you're gonna get with GWAR; the second pic is a POV from the barricade.

Gary Numan at Empire Garage last night. He always puts on a good show.

I do wonder how many 60-something fans of his 70/80s music finally come to a show and wonder how they ended up at a nine inch nails concert.

laughed at a bumper sticker yesterday that said  "gary numan is here in my car"

Not really a "concert" per se, but we were gifted some tix to this comedy event at Far Out Lounge tonight.

Holy shit I have never heard less funny sets in my life.  The rap guy performing when we rolled in was by far the best thing we saw, and he wasn't trying to be funny whatsoever, he was just doing his thing.  The following three "comedians" were painfully awful, to the point where the crowd (which was large) was either silent or booing.  So, that's a wasted night.

Friday I went and saw Wine Lips at The Get Down in Portland.  It was actually a really great lineup as all 3 bands were killer.

Opening was 40 Feet Tall.  They are a local punk band that puts on great live shows.  Tons of energy.

The middle band, Population II, was unknown to me and made a huge impression.  Instant fan.  They are a 3 piece french speaking psych rock band from Montreal.  They blew me away.

Wine Lips, as always, was phenomenal and had everyone bouncing.  Great show.

Last Reckless Kelly show last night before semi-retirement. Kind of a bummer that this was their 4th straight night at Gruene and after selling out Friday and Saturday it was only about 1/3 full. I probably saw them 185 times over the last 25 years and I’m sure I’ll see them again at some point but it’s a little sad to lose them as a full time group.

Ha. Just saw a clip of that William Montgomery's set on Derka's Joe Rogansphere thread. That looked terrible.

Trying to decide whether I want to go down to Longhorn Ballroom tomorrow night to see Jeff Tweedy's solo show. I've seen him so many times but Wilco is a top five all-time band for me. I've dragged my wife to see him, Tweedy (the band) and Wilco enough times that she's out on this show. Might go by myself. I dunno. I'm a little worried because he's touring behind a triple album that I haven't listened to too much of to this point.

It’s what you want to do. Go on and do it.

I'm flying out of Portland this afternoon to catch Tame Impala in Los Angeles tonight.  I can't wait!

I've seen them twice at ACLFest and enjoyed it both times.

Going to see Jeff Tweedy at the Longhorn Ballroom tonight.

Time for some good ole, mid-tempo acoustic Dad rock.

Is Wilco dead?  A triple album by Tweedy seems a bit ominous.

he's always done quite a bit of solo touring. wilco has their festival in mexico in january.

Wife and daughter are headed to Hannah Bang tonight, then wife and I head to Devo in a couple of days, and we finish the week with the whole family going to Avatar / Alien Weaponry / Spiritworld. It's a good live music week.

saw L’Imperatrice at stubbs on 10/26. wrestled with going back to Houston to see them at WOMH Saturday as Leclair was also booked sunday night in Austin (seriously wtf french bookers). L’Imperatrice was amazing. However, we got a shitty Austin duo with a girl that couldn’t sing as the opener. Houston got Gio Chamba…

Nah.

This.  Wilco typically tours every other year.  He's done his own shows in between Wilco touring years so he's touring every year.  Now that his kids are involved, I think it's just a fun side thing.

Had to be in Pittsburgh for reasons today and tomorrow. See Paul at my hotel, buy a ticket about 45 mins before show as I was oblivious to the stop. Good times.

The Tweedy show turned out to be something completely different that what I had expected. The last couple times I’d seen him solo he was, well, solo. Just him and a guitar.

This was him with his kids and their (very competent) friends. So it was a nice mix between a veteran craftsman of song writing and a band with the vitality and rawness of youth. Plus they had an almost Beach Boys esque level of arrangement. Six voices going at once plus all sorts of instruments. Like a garage band orchestra. It was a two hour show of songs I’ve never heard (but for God Save the Queen which was a fun touch at the Longhorn Ballroom) but I never once got bored, which is hard for me to say these days. Plus a ton of cool gear for the guitpron folks. Highly recommended.

Pat Benetar and Bryan Adams sat night.

Fire Away!!!

Portugal the Man just announced a show at Brushy Street Commons (Parish). Presale is going on and the code is SYNTH.  Just picked up a pair of tickets.  That's a tiny ass venue for them so it should be fun.

P.tM was one of the most disappointing shows I've ever been to. No stage presence and just utterly boring. It was weird.

I've seen them 3 times and each time it varied wildly.  The first time was at Stubb's and it was amazing.  Then at ACL Fest and that was a typical mid day festival show.  At ACL Live, the stage was so dark I couldn't tell you what was going on.

I dig their cover of ride into the sun.

Speaking of bands from the way back machine, belly is doing a show at granada on dec 11.

Getting really amped for the Luna show two weeks from Saturday. I've gone back and listened to that covers album of theirs. As good as "Ride Into the Sun" is, I like "Indian Summer" even better. There's a live version on their Bandcamp: https://luna.bandcamp.com/track/indian-summer-bonus-track

Took the family to Avatar this weekend. I wanted to give my wife and daughter a metal experience that they would actually enjoy. Avatar always delivers that -- great mix of metal, theater, production value, humor, and positive vibes. Great show. Even though the latest album is a bit disappointing, the new songs were actually great live. And the favorites were strong as always. Dance Devil Dance is such a great live song.

Yall that got NIN tix are in for a treat. I’ve seen them 8 times and this tour may be my favorite.

I feel like I got the full Brian Jonestown Massacre treatment complete with an Anton meltdown and dressing down of the FOH sound guy.  He told lots of stories because he had to mess with his amp/pedals between each song for several minutes while the rest of the band waited patiently.  I did enjoy having a dual tambourine song with Zia McCabe (Dandy Warhols) jumping onstage to join in the festivities.

The opener was Sun Atoms which is a side project of Peter Holmstrom (also from The Dandy Warhols).  More psychedelic goodness.  Loved it.

Lyle Lovett and Eliza Gilkyson have been added to that benefit for Rich:

loved qotsa last night. the stripped down/reimagined versions of songs with strings and horns were great. lounge singer josh really worked the room. was definitely a different qotsa experience, now give me the rock again next tour.

Saw The Mack's on Friday at Mississippi Studios in Portland.  I've seen them a number of times as they are local and this was their best show to date.  It's obvious that they've been touring and playing a lot.  They were really tight and had new arrangements for their songs that really added to the experience.  If you're not familiar with them but like psych/punk you should check them out.  I think that they'll grow.

Saw David Byrne last night. What an amazing experience. Having 13 people on stage who can all sing will really fill the room. Plus the choreography while they’re singing and playing and the amazing visuals, make for a unique experience. Not the fame as it ever was.

I heard the show started late because it took him longer to bicycle to the venue than he expected?  LOL

Crowd very into it?  Was this your first time there?  They usually have good music, not just during this KUTX run.  Ghostland Observatory next weekend.

First time for sure.  I thought the crowd was good, but I thought the sound was underwhelming.  They need to go study the PA rigs at Radio East, Mohawk, Stubb's, etc.

Good beer.

I'm seriously bummed Hong Kong Fuck You isn't making it out to my neck of the woods. I probably want to catch their lives show more than anyone right now. :/

By the way, I have to say that Kate looks like she legitimately has a great time playing those shows.  She just looks happy playing.

I honestly don't think I've ever seen her without a smile on her face.  She has a very sunny disposition.
