Maalik Murphy unfucked Duke, works his next miracle at Oregon State

Some of the posts on here are fucking crazy. Oregon? USC? Are you guys so far in the tank for a player that you can't see stupid when it is slapping you in the face? Lincoln Riley knows QBs and has helped multiple guys win the Heisman and go early in the 1st. He'll have his pick of the litter at the QB spot. Jesus Christ. Similarly, Oregon can buy whoever the fuck they want at QB. You think the guy they're going to put recruiting and NIL effort into is Maalik Murphy?

This shit is bizarre. I get cheering for a dude when he goes elsewhere, but putting someone this mediocre up on a pedestal is ridiculous. Never mind, also, that the dude is a fucking statue. Have folks never watched the offensive schemes deployed by Riley or Stein?

Have you seen Michigan's QB room?

  • Dude. Did y'all watch the same game? Before he got hurt, Card was playing pretty well. Yes, a one legged Card isnt very good, but he still gutted us out to a lead with a minute and half left. Fucking

  • Maalik plays school. Great move for this young man. I hope he slays it and gets drafted.

I like Maalik but he’s not an NFL QB. He has limited mobility and cannot read defenses and isn’t accurate enough to overcome that. He has an NFL arm but so did plenty of others who sucked. He won’t get drafted and won’t last in the league.

So......other than that....there's a chance?

Also nuts. Duke is his ceiling. If he went to Ole Miss they’d instantly regress.

Joey bought Spencer Sanders, an entrenched starter, to put him on the bench for his last year of eligibility. Joey don't give a fuck. It it helps fine, if he's on the bench, whatever.

Interestingly, I have a friend whose son is looking to move from SC to Duke. SC is not going to take Maalik. They have too much talent coming in. MM wouldn’t move from Duke without a defined home.

curious if he’s transferring for a pay day or to keep improving.

You don't win 9 games at Duke by being a middling QB. You guys have history with him I guess but he's gonna find a good program and make good money.

Yes, you do. It happened this year.

Psh, you don't just win 9 games when your schedule is

W Elon (6-6)
W Northwestern (4-8)
W UConn (8-4)
W Middle Tenn (3-9)
W UNC (6-6)
L GT (7-5)
W FSU (2-10)
L SMU (11-2)
L Miami (10-2)
W NCST (6-6)
W VT (6-6)
W Wake (4-8)

They missed Clemson, Syracuse and Louisville in conference. Their 5 conferences wins were a combined 24-36 and their non-conf was ass 21-27)

smu gave them SIX turnovers and their offense turned that into a whopping zero points.  one of the craziest stats of the year and seriously hard to do.

Welp, time for another title change.

Who tampered with him?

Good for him...but sucks, I would have loved to see Duke fuck up Ole Miss's Bowl season and end the "we should have made the playoffs talk"

Same. I’m really happy Maalik found success as a starter after his time at Texas. But I watched a couple Duke games this season, and “fine” is about how I would describe what I saw.

I don’t think he’d be a starter at a school like Oregon. But what the fuck do I know.

Yeah he was fine.  Don't blame him for taking a payday or thinking he could improve somewhere.

I could see UCLA making some promises to Maalik, I guess. I have no idea about their QB depth chart, but they sucked this year and their starting QB was a Senior.

Closer to home, good school, etc.

What was the fucking point of this comment?  Just wasting time to say something even MORE stupid than you claim I am.

Grow the fuck up clown.

Came here to post something similar.  Duke is #53 in Sagarin, 0-1 against the top 10 and 0-2 against the top-30.

AND -
They beat NW by 6, UConn by 5, UNC by 1, FSU by 7, VT by 3, and Wake by 6 on a last second TD.  Duke is a 6-6 team that overperformed expectations.

Yea didn’t get either of those schools at all.
I don’t know anything about OUs new OC but I could see a school like that looking for him. Big enough to be able to throw some money at him but in such dire straits that they are desperate for anyone who’s decent to play the position.

We don't know the real story, but since he probably won't make the NFL, I don't understand how this makes sense for him.

Better to stay at Duke and make those connections and opportunities that are unmatched. That school network is unreal.

More power to him, though.

Maalik's main problem is his lack of mobility, and that's made all the more frustrating by his appearance. If that guy had even decent athleticism you'd be looking at a college Jalen Hurts type. He's just not anywhere near as good a passer/facilitator to make up for being unable to challenge teams with his legs. I'm thinking Diaz ushered him out to look to upgrade.

And Duke missed an extra point with little to no time on the clock that would have won it.  Instead OT and a loss

I think he ends up at UCLA or one of the Arizona schools.  Someone has lined up NIL bids for him that Duke isn’t willing to match.  My guess on the backup is he was told he wasn’t starting or had to earn the bowl game start and hit ejection. Not sure though.

You sir do not seem to be familiar with the ubiquitous aggy Netwerk!  I suggest you look into it.  It's practically a money machine from what I hear.

“real story”? The same entity that pushed him to go into the portal before the playoff last year, as Texas’ backup QB, is the same entity pushing him into the portal now. And Murphy is complicit. They’re grabbing as much money from the highest bidder as they can. Feigning confusion about this just makes you guys look like dipshits.

I mean, they need a QB.... they prefer an experienced QB. All the QBs in the portal have warts or they wouldn't be in the portal. Who would you take over him??

I'm sure you're right. My point is the Duke pipeline and connections can supercharge your career, as my younger daughter can testify. Actually, his plan to grab as much money as possible DOES make sense, since his pro career looks limited at best.

Hes going to have positive connections with Texas, Duke, another school and hundreds of thousands or more in the bank. I think he might be okay 👌

True. He's probably played it as well as he could have given his skillset.

and I don't know about Miami, but doesn't Freeze's offense require a QB with a little bit of mobility?

Meanwhile our resident insiders on SEC Rant were saying Duke offered him $3M to stay... LULZ

Well this is an interesting new development...

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5986965/2024/12/11/duke-lands-tulane-transfer-darian-mensah-top-quarterback-in-transfer-portal-report/

Former Tulane starting quarterback Darian Mensah has committed to Duke, according to ESPN.

That’s a huge win for second-year head coach Manny Diaz, who had starting quarterback Maalik Murphy announced earlier this week he was headed to the portal.

Mensah, ranked No. 1 among all available quarterbacks according to The Athletic, ranked sixth nationally in passing efficiency as a redshirt freshman, completing 65.9 percent of his 287 pass attempts for 2,723 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions.

He also showed some elusiveness late in the year on the ground, rushing for 57 yards and a touchdown in a win over Navy and 41 yards in the AAC Championship Game loss to Army.

“He’s a future NFL quarterback,” an SEC scouting director said.

Duke went 9-3 with Murphy this past season.

take with a grain of salt but the word from Duke fans on Reddit is that Mensah was a done deal and Maalik was forced out.

Duke upgraded. Doubtful that Maalik does the same if this is true.

Maalik’s NIL check was going to get smaller.  So constructively, yes, that’s kinda what happened.  Duke fans are pissing me off though blaming Maalik for leaving after more or less giving Leonard a pass last year. I wonder why.

Hell, we've got guys doing the same to him over in the recruiting portal thread. I'm not going to shit on a kid who left his backup role to be a starting QB somewhere else which also happens to come with more money. As to when/how they do it... they are a backup that's not playing who has a chance to lock down a starting role elsewhere... you just go.   Duke definitely pushed him out and he'll find another home so good for him.

well if the story about Duke cutting his NIL deal is true then he's not wrong.
